Tele Atlas Delivers Historic Speed Product in Asia
Speed Profiles for Taiwan First to Use Community Input in Asia to Help
Drivers Identify Optimal Routes and More Accurately Estimate Travel
    Times

Singapore, 3 November 2009 –Tele Atlas, a leading global provider
of digital maps and dynamic content
for navigation and location based solutions, today announced the availability of
Tele Atlas® Speed Profiles in Taiwan, the first complete historic speed product
in Asia built with insight from local drivers that enables navigation system users
find the fastest routes and far more accurately estimate travel times. Speed
Profiles for Taiwan provides drivers with unique insight into real world traffic
patterns across the country’s complete navigable road network. With Speed
Profiles, drivers can make the best route choices that normally only well-informed
locals would select and in turn, also save valuable time and money.

With congested roadways and ever-increasing travel times, users of
mapping applications are seeking better ways to travel efficiently,
    minimize
transportation costs and find the optimal routes to their destinations. Speed
Profiles aggregates and enhances real speed data from GPS-enabled devices, using
consumer driving patterns to provide true average speeds on individual road
segments. In contrast, traditional systems use standardized estimates to calculate
routes, ignoring hurdles such as traffic lights, school hours and rotaries that can
severely impact travel times. Speed Profiles for Taiwan is Tele Atlas’ first
community-based offering outside of North America and Europe, highlighting the
expanding and ever more global role of community in advancing navigation and
    location-based solutions.

    “With Speed Profiles, our regional
customers can now deliver solutions that help consumers save time and money,
consume less fuel and help preserve the environment, as well as help businessescut
transportation and logistics costs,” said Rik Temmink, Vice President of
Product Management, Tele Atlas. “This is especially important in densely
populated countries like Taiwan, whose traffic jams are some of the most complex
and chaotic in the world. We are excited to extend availability of this unique and
powerful product to Asia and to be the first to deliver a complete solution in the
region based on historical driving information.”

Speed Profiles enables route calculations based on highly comprehensive
historical travel time and measured speed information. Tele Atlas Speed
Profiles is available in 27 countries and territories, covering 35
million kilometers of both directions of roads. The version for Taiwan
includes 211,000 kilometers and complete coverage of the navigable road
    network.

TomTom WORK unveils real-time display of digital tachograph data

~New feature helps transport companies with vehicle management, planning and reporting needs~

Amsterdam, 4 November 2009 – TomTom WORK, the division of TomTom dedicated to commercial vehicle fleets, today unveils the integration of real-time digital tachograph data in TomTom WEBFLEET®. By having the driving and resting times for drivers or co-drivers delivered live to the office, dispatchers will be able to schedule jobs more efficiently and dynamically, as well as run more reliable reports that improve business efficiencies.

    Dynamic dispatch
In the dynamic environment that transport companies operate in, jobs change and frequently need to be rescheduled. However, the driving and resting time directives for both drivers and co-drivers are also key factors in determining job assignments. Thanks to the new live display of tachograph data on the driving, resting and working time of drivers, dispatchers will have greater insight in assigning jobs based on information such as the remaining driving time of a particular driver.

    Work time reporting
Transport companies can also use the tachograph data from TomTom WEBFLEET as a reliable source for reporting on working time. Previously, it could take days or even weeks to get access to tachograph information as most companies obtain the data once the vehicle returns from its assignment. Now, with the ability to read tachograph information immediately, it can be used to significantly improve important administrative tasks linked to working time.

Access to all the real-time and historical data is provided via TomTom WORK’s WEBFLEET.connect web-based service. To fully leverage the real-time tachograph data for their business needs the information can be integrated into a company’s back end systems. This opens up a wide range of possibilities for third parties to develop fully integrated and customised solutions. The working time data can feed straight into the payroll system for faster payouts of salary and the driving/ resting time logs can be offset against the legislative directives, for a real-time compliancy check.

“Tachograph data is at the heart of business administration for transport companies,” says Michael Geffroy, Vice President of Sales, TomTom WORK. “By integrating this feature into TomTom WEBFLEET, TomTom WORK is further strengthening its portfolio to meet the needs of transport companies.”

    About TomTom WORK ACTIVE
The display of digital tachograph data is available as part of the TomTom WORK Active solution. The updated TomTom WORK Active solution provides a complete Connected Navigation service through the combination of the TomTom GO 7000, TomTom WEBFLEET and TomTom LINK 300. This is a smart combination of navigation, two-way communication, tracking and tracing, order management and reporting.

    Pricing and availability
Digital tachograph support for VDO DTCO will be made available in Q4 09 for existing and new customers. A specific subscription to TomTom WEBFLEET is required.

Cell Phones Now Guide You; Are Navigation Devices Over?

Published: Thursday, 5 Nov 2009 | 4:13 PM ET Text Size By: Krystina Gustafson
    Special to CNBC.com

As cellular devices have evolved, they've morphed into all-in-one tools that even Inspector Gadget would envy.

With Google's [GOOG 548.65 8.32 (+1.54%) ] recent announcement that it will offer users free turn-by-turn navigation on the Motorola [MOT 9.32 0.32 (+3.56%) ] Droid, available Friday, cell phones are once again boosting their resumes, this time at the expense of standard navigation devices such as Garmin [GRMN 28.13 1.29 (+4.81%) ] and TomTom.

    Motorola Droid
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although more than half of the adults in North America who own a navigation device currently use stand-alone systems, Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin said that by 2013, cell phones will dominate the market.

While the shift won't happen overnight, Google's free navigation will prove that routing isn't strong enough to be a business in and of itself, forcing traditional navigation companies to reroute their business plans and lower their prices to stay afloat, analysts said.

"I'm not saying that either of those things are going away," Golvin said. "What I expect is that the people who don't do navigation today, those people are much more likely to adopt the system on their phone than to spend the money to get a [personal navigation device]."

One strategy that navigation companies should consider is to shift their focus from hardware to software, as that's where they have an edge over Google, Golvin said. Companies like Garmin and TomTom already possess the equipment to conduct the in-depth research necessary to provide travelers with the best information — whether it's simplifying driving on complex highways or avoiding toll roads.

While Google is an innovative company, it doesn't have the "insight and knowledge" that traditional navigation companies do, especially in foreign countries, Golvin said. And while the company has the cash flow to invest in such costly research, it seems to be more focused on providing location-based advertising than replacing PNDs, he said.

Traditional navigation companies should also expand their micro navigation capabilities, as most people's daily needs rely on finding points of interest near their location, not long-distance directions, said Thilo Koslowski, an analyst at Gartner technology research company.

What's more, they should develop their software to be more integrated, weaving together positioning with social networking, Koslowski said.

This is something Garmin has already started to develop through its Ciao! service, which allows users to locate their friends based on their GPS signal. But this service pales in popularity to the possibility of linking to sites such as Facebook or Twitter, and spokesperson Jessica Myers admits that the technology is still in its infant stages.

The market made its first significant shift toward cellular navigation when Nokia [NOK 13.13 0.18 (+1.39%) ] acquired Navteq in 2007. It was the first time a cell phone offered turn-by-turn navigation at the same functionality of a standalone device, though it's presence has been overshadowed in the US by the iPhone, IDC research analyst William Stofega said.

    Source: Googleblog
Google's new turn-by-turn navigation system, available on the Motorola Droid Friday.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Myers said that since cell phone navigation is nothing new, traditional navigation companies have already started shifting their attention toward it and will continue to do so. TomTom, for example, has already developed a navigation application for the iPhone, which can be downloaded for $100.

Garmin has Garmin Mobile, which can be used on the BlackBerry, Palm Treo [PALM 11.57 0.71 (+6.54%) ] and other smartphones. It has also developed the Nuvifone, a cell phone equipped with a voice-activated navigation system, which it plans to expand on while also creating new models.

But the Nuvifone received lackluster reviews from techies who were disappointed with its delayed release and packaging, which wasn't as sleek as many people expected, Stofega said. What's more, developing a cell phone that will be competitive in such a crowded market is a costly undertaking, and one that may not be worth it to Garmin, Kowlowski said.

"Ultimately it will depend on the company's ability to look beyond the existing business that they have today," he said.

Stofega disagreed, saying that further developing the phone is one way Garmin can maintain its presence in the market.

Unlike other cell phone navigation systems, the Nuvifone comes with a suction cup that can attach to a car's windshield, giving it a convenience factor its competitors have yet to offer, he said. The screen is almost as large as one of its PNDs, the lighting is controlled and the screen is a much higher quality, which is especially crucial when driving in bright sunlight or at night.

This has done little to quell nervous investors, or convince analysts that stand-alone providers will come out unscathed.

Following Google's announcement, and TomTom's report that its selling prices were about 20 euros, or 9 percent lower in the most recent quarter, investor worries caused Garmin's shares to fall about 15 percent on Wednesday, despite reporting a 24 percent increase in profit. They did rebound slightly on Thursday, rising about 4 percent, but Needham & Co. maintained a hold rating on the stock, citing long-term concerns in light of Google's announcement.

What's more, Koslowksi predicts that by 2012, more than 200 million phones in the US will have GPS capabilities, and the price on a standard PND will fall from around $200 to about $50.

But for all the challenges that PND companies face, cell phone navigation also has its drawbacks. Aside from inferior screen quality and slower cues caused by their reliance on wireless networks, the rapid deterioration of a phone's battery is also something companies need to confront, Golvin said.

As a result, he predicts consumers will own both PNDs and cell phone navigation systems, adding that 4 percent of the 27 percent who own a navigation system already own multiple devices.

"It's not really an either/or choice," he said.

Nonetheless, Golvin admits that to stay competitive, traditional companies will need to adjust their focus to provide what Google at this point cannot — their deep understanding of how people navigate.

Android 2.0 Phone Ships to EU without Google Nav

Motorola this week announced Motorola Milestone, the European, GSM equivalent of the Droid phone that ships in the United States with the free, turn-by-turn Google Maps Navigation. However, European consumers will have, instead of Google Maps Navigation, a trial license for MOTONAV, Motorola’s navigation software, developed by a third party. The Android smartphone will be initially sold in Germany through wireless operators O2 and Vodafone.

In the United States Google has its own map data which makes it simpler to provide free navigation. In Europe the Mountain View company is still using Tele Atlas, although it might change since AND is said to have signed a contract with the web giant that would include a single license for both map display and turn-by-turn navigation.

Dutch agency Selmore picks up pan-European ad brief for TomTom
by Jennifer Whitehead, Brand Republic 12-Nov-09, 08:30

LONDON - Navigation systems maker TomTom has appointed Dutch agency Selmore to handle its pan-European above-the-line advertising after a pitch against Leo Burnett and FHV/BBDO.

TomTom plans to undertake a new marketing push across Europe in 2010. At the moment its products are sold in 30 countries worldwide and available in 20 languages.
The company's share price nose dived by 13% at the end of October when Google revealed it was creating free navigational software for use on mobile handsets using the Android operating system.

Google's navigational tool will provide the same service of maps and spoken direction but also incorporate imagery from Street View.

Poppe van Pelt, creative partner at Selmore, said: "Navigation devices are an inescapable part of our everyday lives, and TomTom has always been at the forefront of developing the technology. We are looking forward to working with TomTom to help develop its brand across Europe."

    view: TomTom GO 750 Live
    donderdag 12 november 2009

    Tele Atlas Licenses Intermap 3D

It is being reported that Tele Atlas has reached an agreement to license Intermap’s 3D Terrain model. We’ve talked about 3D buildings from Tele Atlas before, but this agreement would give Tele Atlas access to 3D terrain views.

The image to the right shows an example of what 3D terrain looks like on a GPS. Click the picture to enlarge. With 3D terrain, the world is no longer flat. Having used 3D terrain in devices like the HP iPAQ, various Navigon models, and to a degree some of the new Nuvi models I’m not really convinced it does much to help the driver follow a route. While it does provide additional context to the road map I just haven’t come across a scenario where I’ve said “I’m glad I was using a GPS with 3D terrain as it helped me follow the route.”

“Intermap’s NEXTMap digital maps set the baseline standard for true 3D in-dash visualization and are uniquely able to deliver real world views of not only the road network, but the entire surface of the earth. We’re excited to work with Intermap’s NEXTMap terrain data, which allows us to take navigation to the next level with a visually superior product set.” — Rik Temmink, Global Vice President of Product Management, Tele Atlas

It is said that a targeted launch date of systems incorporating these maps is in late 2010.

Dual unveils GPS cradle for iPod Touch

Dual unveils GPS cradle for iPod Touch
Dual Electronics announced this week the upcoming availability of its “GPS Navigation & Battery Cradle for iPod touch” that includes a GPS-enabled cradle and a turn by turn navigation application. To be available at the end of November, this cradle will retail at $179.99 and includes a rechargeable battery, amplified speaker, audio out connection, a Mini USB port and an adjustable windshield Mount.

“There are approximately 24 million iPod touch owners worldwide who are missing out on the ever-growing number of location-based apps” said Jim Braun, President and CEO of Dual Electronics. “We are excited to be the first to offer a solution that not only expands the capabilities of their device, but also does it in a way that is consistent with why consumers love their iPod touch – the Cradle is simple to use, multifunctional and completely portable”, added Braun.

The cradle is also multipurposes, “it complies with the requirement from Apple to provide GPS location data to any app which requests it, including apps for hiking, bicycling, social networking, geocaching, as well as other navigation apps”, added Dual.

Included in the price, the NavAtlas application - a Dual branded version of G-Map from Korean company XRoad - is a fully-featured turn-by-turn solution with Text-to-Speech technology and the latest U.S. and Canada maps from NAVTEQ.

A competing option is available from GeoLife (US iPhone navigation app Navmii at $39.99) and PosiMotion (G-Fi GPS router selling at $99). TomTom also said it would offer a modified version its iPhone cradle to cater to the iPod Touch form factor, although it is not ready yet and likely to be expensive since its iPhone cradle costs $119 without the navigation software ($99).

Apple is likely to take a close look at the sales of such accessories to assess if it would worth adding GPS to future versions of its iPod Touch.

    TomTom update voor iPhone software
    maandag 16 november 2009 - Door: Webredactie

    TomTom iPhone
