Industrial motors power chip market shows 9% annual growth

Peter Clarke EE Times Europe (08/25/2008 7:35 AM EDT)

LONDON — The market for power semiconductors in industrial motor drives is set to grow from $1 billion in 2007 to $1.3 billion in 2010, with the growth mainly driven by an increasing fraction of motors electronic drives, according to IMS Research (Wellingborough, England). Those figures imply a annual growth rate of about 9.1 percent.

Power semiconductor components are the biggest revenue opportunity used in industrial motor drives and the market size is about twice the size of the combined market for microcontroller and analog-based components. "IGBT modules are used in the large majority of industrial motor drives, explained Jamie Fox, an IMS Research analyst, in a statement. "As well as standard IGBT modules, intelligent power modules and power integrated modules are also used."

Power Integrated Modules have the highest growth forecast, of 10.8 percent annually.

Most of the market is for modules; however there is also a small market for discrete transistors and power ICs. Significant changes in the basic bill of materials are not expected in the next few years. Performance trends for power semiconductors include a demand for reduced heat losses, better temperature tolerance and higher power densities.

    A Renewed Interest in Nanotechnology
by: Perry Sadorsky posted on: August 25, 2008

A recent article in The Economist (August, 2, 2008, page 54) describes how Russia is trying to build a high technology economy. By designating the city of Dubna as a free economic zone (a zone where Russian high technology companies can legally operate and pay lower taxes), the Russian government is hoping to duplicate the success of Silicon Valley or Bangalore.

A number of different technology initiatives are being pursued, but one in particular, nanotechnology, has already received a lot of government funding. According to the article, in 2007 the Russian government put $5.5 billion into a state corporation for nanotechnologies. Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating materials at the atomic level. Developments in nanotechnology could have profound impacts on the cloths we wear, the food we eat, and the homes we live in. Nanotechnology offers the potential for enormous breakthroughs in computing, energy, and biotechnology. Does Russia's investment in nanotechnology signal a renewed interest in nanotechnology?

"TSMC, which has started making MEMS chips for Analog Devices, could see the business make up 10 percent of its total sales this year, with the ratio growing to 20 percent in the next 2-3 years, Taiwan's Topology Research said."

July book-to-bill ratio climbs to 0.83
    25 August 2008 | By Mark Osborne

SEMI book-to-bill ratioNorth American semiconductor equipment suppliers posted $905 million in orders in July 2008 (three-month average basis) and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.83 according to SEMI. The preliminary June book-to-bill ratio of 0.85 was revised downward considerably to 0.81, indicating a small climb over a potential drop in the ratio.

"Orders for semiconductor equipment continue reflect the pronounced cutback in capital expenditures this year and are at the lowest levels since November of 2003,” said Daniel Tracy, senior director of Industry Research and Statistics at SEMI. "While chip-makers remain attentive to cost controls, this remains a highly cyclic industry. Factory utilization levels, unit demand growth and planned fab projects suggest that new investment activity will resume in 2009.”

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in July 2008 was $905 million. The bookings figure is three percent less than the final June 2008 level of $934 billion, and about 36 percent less than the $1.41 billion in orders posted in July 2007.

The three-month average of worldwide billings in July 2008 was $1.09 billion. The billings figure is about six percent less than the final June 2008 level of $1.16 billion, and about 36 percent less than the July 2007 billings level of $1.69 billion.

As the chart below highlights, the book-to-bill ratio has been falling for two years, after reaching a peak in June, 2006. In the second of two dips in the ratio since 2006, the weakest period continues to be the current year, due to several rounds of capital spending cuts at memory manufacturers and continued conservative spending at the major foundries during a period of high-utilization rates.

    Fab-tool spending set for rebound

Mark LaPedus EE Times (08/25/2008 3:06 PM EDT)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A decline of 20 percent in worldwide fab equipment spending is expected for 2008, but the sector is expected to rebound and grow over 20 percent in 2009, according to a new report from SEMI.

The rebound will be driven by over 70 fab projects--as well as revived capital spending in Korea and Taiwan--in 2009, according to SEMI. In total, the report lists 53 fab equipping projects and up to 21 fab construction projects in 2009, according to SEMI, a San Jose-based trade group.

Many fab projects have been delayed during 2008, thanks in part to an IC lull. Overall fab construction spending is projected to fall by 38 percent in 2008, but 2009 will show over a 50 percent growth rate in the arena, according to SEMI.

In 2008, 300-mm projects make up about 90 percent of all fabs equipment spending, according to SEMI. Some 69 percent of all equipment spending is for 65-nm and below nodes, according to SEMI.

Overall annual semiconductor fab capacity in 2008 is expected to be about 16 million 200-mm equivalent wafers, a growth rate of just 9 percent. In 2009, capacity is expected to grow about 10 percent, according to SEMI.

Memory makes up the largest share of total semiconductor fab capacity with a 40 percent share in 2008. This is followed by foundries with over 20 percent, and logic with 15 percent, according to the report.

In 2009, memory will slightly increase its share to 42 percent, while foundries and logic are forecasted to remain at about the same share levels, according to the report.

Over most of the past decade, Japan has spent the largest share of money on fabs. This will change in 2009 with Taiwan and Korea exceeding Japan in fab equipment and construction spending, according to SEMI.

By 2009, the share in total spending throughout the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) will rise to over 67 percent, from 50 percent in 2006, according to SEMI.

In 2008, only four semiconductor companies spent over $1.5 billion. In 2009, SEMI predicts twice as many will spend at that level.

European ECU market sees continuing boom

Christoph Hammerschmidt EE Times Europe (08/26/2008 7:55 AM EDT)

MUNICH, Germany — The European market for automotive electronic control units (ECUs) for powertrains and will grow at a rate of 10.9 percent over the next seven years, predicts market researcher Frost & Sullivan. Growth drivers are the drivers demand for more comfort as well as "green" legislation.

Frost & Sullivan experts predict the market to expand in the period through 2015 from currently €499 million (about $740 million) to €1.14 billion. This equals an average growth rate of almost 11 percent annually. "We expect that the initiative of the European automotive manufacturers association ACEA to reduce CO2 emission will significantly drive the demand for innovative hybrid drive and transmission technologies such as double clutch transmissions and automated manual transmissions", explained Frost & Sullivan research analyst Aswin Kumar. "At the same time, the EU Commission's efforts to reduce the number of traffic casualties by 50 percent will drive demand for accident prevention systems and other safety-relevant systems."

The more stringent EU rules in particular will stimulate the demand for more number-crunching power in the ECUs used for motor control and exhaust gas treatment applications, the market researchers say. In order to differentiate themselves in the highly competitive market, automotive OEMs will roll out several new applications in the near future, Kumar said. Besides environmental and safety aspects, these applications will meet customers demand for comfort inside the vehicles at affordable prices.

Pricing is another important aspect in the automotive electronics market, and it will continue to do so, hinted Kumar. Nevertheless, time-to-market for innovative applications will also become a critical success factor, he said. In order to reduce time-to-market, it is necessary for all suppliers along the value chain to cooperate closely.

Frost & Sullivan's findings are more or less in line with a recently published similar study from competitor Gartner.

July set to end chip market's strong growth, says analyst

Peter Clarke EE Times Europe (08/28/2008 8:26 AM EDT)

LONDON The three-month moving average of global chip sales for July has come in at $22.1 billion, up 7.2 percent year-on-year from $20.6 billion in July 2007, according to Bruce Diesen, analyst at Carnegie Research. However, this implies that actual global chip sales in July 2008 came in at $20.54 billion, only 1.3 percent up on the actual sales of $20.28 billion recorded for July 2007.

This would end a run of strong chip market growth figures that included April 2008 chip sales up 3.0 percent, May 2008 chip sales up 7.7 percent and June 2008 chip sales up 12.2 percent. It could also indicate that the credit crunch and the high-cost of energy are belatedly starting to slow user-demand for electronic equipment and the chips that go inside it.

Traditionally the second half of the year is significantly stronger for chip sales, than the first half as companies build consumer products to stock the supply chain prior to the winter holiday and gift-giving season.

Diesen said that chip volumes are holding up, helped by the trend of more PCs per household and low cost PCs for surfing the Internet. Handset growth continued at similar pace to Q2. Chinese tech exports remained strong in July, but the Japanese technology sector slowed as inventories reached a seven-year high.

Diesen kept his forecast for the chip market year at a 3 percent market growth in dollar-terms and an 11 percent rise in unit volumes.

Global semi sales up 2.8% in July

John Walko EE Times Europe (09/01/2008 5:17 AM EDT)

LONDON --- Sales of semiconductors in Europe in July grew by 0.7 percent to reach $3.39 bn according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, up 3.3 percent on the corresponding period last year. On a year to date basis, sales increased by 1.6 percent against the same period last year.

On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in July 2008 were $22.178 billion, up 2.8 percent on the previous month. This represents an increase of 7.6 percent compared with the sales recorded in July 2007, and an increase of 0. 5 percent on a year-to-date basis.

The dollar to Euro exchange rate has again had a "significant" impact on the European figures, according to the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA). Measured in Euros, semiconductor sales in July 2008 were Euros 2.17 billion, up 0.7 percent on the previous month and down 10.5 percent versus the same month a year ago.

On a YTD basis semiconductor sales showed a decline of 11.7 percent versus the same period in the year 2007.

WSTS: Wereldwijde halfgeleiderverkopen stijging 7,6% in juli

    1 september 2008, 13:35 | FD.nl/DJ
