Steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa's (AMSA's) share price on the JSE fell by more than 33% on Tuesday afternoon after it announced that it was expecting to report a loss a share of between 30c and 38c for the six months ended June 30, compared with the earnings a share of R2.76 reported for the first six months of 2022.
It was also expecting to report a headline loss of share of between 38c and 46c for the period under review, compared with headline earnings a share of R2.71 in the prior comparable period.

AMSA, which is scheduled to publish its interim results on July 27, noted that the international trading environment improved in the first half of this year, on the back of destocking and "less painful" energy prices.
"Locally, the trading environment caught no such tailwinds, as the burden of electricity loadshedding, high inflation and interest rates, and negative growth in key steel-consuming sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, mining and construction affected already fragile consumer confidence.

"The softness of the market amid the unprecedented severity of the electricity loadshedding in the last six months, was very much underestimated, which in turn affected the response time with which production could be adjusted in a responsible and well-considered manner.
"Building and maintaining any semblance of operating rhythm, which is an absolute necessity in running a continuous, integrated steelmaking process in a cost-aware manner, proved especially problematic," AMSA stated.
It added that, given a weaker pricing environment and faced with cost compressibility challenges, the company anticipates reporting a substantially weaker financial performance for the reporting period compared with the prior comparable period.
"Furthermore, the anticipated release of working capital proved to be much more difficult, resulting in the net borrowings position remaining at elevated levels.
"Remedial actions are under way to improve the company’s net borrowing position in the wake of the weaker-for-longer steel trading environment in the region," it said.
The company's share price fell by 33.5% to R2.32 apiece by 16:50 on July 18, compared with Monday's close of R3.49 a share.

SINAI Technologies, ArcelorMittal & RMI Forge an Alliance for Steel Decarbonization

In a groundbreaking and synergistic partnership, SINAI Technologies, ArcelorMittal Brasil, and RMI, a clean energy transformation organization, have joined forces to tackle the pressing issue of decarbonizing the steel industry.

SINAI Technologies, a software platform specializing in decarbonization and carbon management, aims to leverage its expertise in the field to contribute to the sustainable production of steel.

To address decarbonization challenge, RMI has introduced the Steel Emissions Reporting Guidance as part of the Horizon Zero project. This guidance assists steel stakeholders in calculating their comprehensive supply chain emissions, also known as Scope 3 emissions.
ArcelorMittal Brasil, driven by its commitment to greener production processes, has enthusiastically embraced this endeavor and has already begun uploading activity data from its steel plant onto the SINAI platform.

By utilizing this data, SINAI can create a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory that encompasses the company's emission sources and the corresponding emissions they generate.

The combined efforts of SINAI, RMI, and ArcelorMittal Brasil through pilot testing will showcase the transformative power of enhanced reporting guidance and software solutions, enabling greater transparency and facilitating sustainable purchasing decisions.

ArcelorMittal SA Plunges Amidst Harsh Realities

In a stunning turn of events, the colossal steel magnate, ArcelorMittal South Africa, plummeted by a staggering 40% and sent shockwaves throughout the financial landscape. This abrupt descent came as a consequence of the company's own admission that it had gravely miscalculated the dire downturn experienced in South Africa. The repercussions were far-reaching, erasing a substantial R1.7 billion in shareholder value and leaving a resounding wake of disillusionment.

In a somber trading update, ArcelorMittal unveiled the disheartening forecast that their interim financial results would reveal a loss beyond imagination. Headline earnings per share were anticipated to plummet by an astonishing 117% in the year leading up to June's end. This impending catastrophe implied a potential loss of approximately R515 million for a company that currently boasts a market valuation of around R2.3 billion on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

ArcelorMittal attributed their dismal predicament to an underestimation of the economic ramifications arising from unprecedented load shedding, an event marked by severe power outages. The profound impact of this tumultuous period had hampered their ability to adapt and respond promptly to the shifting landscape. The task of establishing and maintaining operational stability, an absolute necessity for their integrated steelmaking process, proved to be a Herculean feat, plagued by hindrances at every step.

Having been a stalwart in the industry since 1928, accounting for over half of South Africa's crude steel production, ArcelorMittal had previously weathered various adversities. They had reported an earnings setback of R2.3 billion due to load shedding, rail malfunctions, and labor strikes in the previous year. However, the company had cautiously harbored optimism that the tides were turning in their favor.

Alas, the anticipated relief was fleeting. The challenging reality of high inflation, persistent load shedding, surging interest rates, and a contraction in key steel-consuming sectors like manufacturing, automobiles, mining, and construction battered an already fragile consumer confidence. Additionally, the company faced unforeseen hurdles in unlocking its working capital, leading to a prolonged struggle and a persistently elevated net borrowings position.

To compound their troubles, ArcelorMittal was dealt another blow when their Chief Financial Officer, Siphamandla Mthethwa, abruptly resigned after just a brief tenure of two weeks. Personal reasons were cited as the cause of this unexpected departure, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already tumultuous situation.

In light of these distressing circumstances, ArcelorMittal has undertaken urgent measures to rectify their perilous net borrowing position in the face of an enduringly challenging steel trading environment. As they grapple with the headwinds that continue to buffet the region, the company seeks to implement necessary remedies and steer a course toward financial stability.

Daar zijn nu even andere krachten actief.

Trending Now: Tata to invest £4 billion in first overseas gigafactory in UK
    Power Materials News | July 19, 2023

Indian conglomerate Tata Group confirmed on Wednesday it will invest £4 billion ($5.17 billion) in a UK battery cell gigafactory to supply Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and other manufacturers, Kallanish reports.

The plant will have capacity to produce 40 gigawatt-hours of cells annually, which the government says will be enough to cover “almost half” of the battery production needed by 2030. The investment will “turbocharge” UK’s switch to zero-emissions vehicles, the Department of Business and Trade says.
