BHP Reports 9% Dip in Coking Coal Production in FY 22

    Strategic Research Institute

    26 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

BHP’s BMA production decreased by 9% to 29 million tonne, 58 million tonne on 100% basis. Significant wet weather impacts across most BMA operations and labour constraints, including COVID-19 related absenteeism which impacted stripping and mine productivity, more than offset record production at the Broadmeadow mine. Following the automation of Daunia's truck fleet in November 2021, the automation of Goonyella's pre-strip truck fleet was completed in March 2022 with the Goonyella coal truck fleet expected to be fully autonomous by the end of the December 2022 quarter.

Production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 29-32 million tonne, 58-64 million tonne on a 100% basis. A long wall move at Broadmeadow mine is scheduled for the September 2022 quarter.

The divestment of BHP’s interest in BMC was completed on 3 May 2022 and BMC volumes are no longer included in metallurgical coal volumes.

NSWEC thermal coal production decreased by 4% to 14 million tonne, reflecting lower volumes due to an increased proportion of washed coal to capitalise on higher margins for higher quality coals, COVID-19 related labour constraints which impacted stripping performance and mine productivity, and wet weather. Production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 13-15 million tonne reflecting a continued focus on higher quality coals.

    Published on :
    26 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Bowen Coking Coal announced that coal mining has commenced at the Broadmeadow East Pit near Moranbah in Queensland's Bowen Basin as the company consolidates its position as Queensland's new independent metallurgical coal producer. Coal from Broadmeadow East is planned to be initially processed at the neighboring Fitzroy CHPP under an infrastructure sharing agreement with Fitzroy (CQ) Pty Ltd and exported through the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal.

As the first producing pit of Bowen's expanded Burton Complex, which includes the Burton and Lenton Pits, 20km to the north, Broadmeadow East coal will be processed through the Burton CHPP following the completion of its refurbishment in early 2023.

After final approvals for the project were granted in March this year, Bowen announced the appointment of BUMA Australia Pty Ltd as mining contractor in May.

Broadmeadow East's first coal follows the Company's first coal shipment from the Bluff Mine near Blackwater in June. First ROM coal is targeted for late Q4 2022 from the nearby Burton Pit as the company works towards a 5 million tonnes per annum ROM by 2024.

Bowen Coking Coal Ltd is a Queensland based coking coal exploration Company with advanced exploration and development assets. The Company owns Broadmeadow East (100%), Isaac River (100%), Cooroorah (100%), Hillalong (90%) and Comet Ridge (100%) coking coal projects in the world-renowned Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia. Bowen is also a joint venture partner with Stanmore Coal Limited in the Lilyvale (15% interest) and Mackenzie (5% interest) coking coal projects. The Company recently acquired 90% of the Lenton Joint Venture which owns the Lenton Project and the Burton Mine in the northern Bowen Basin. The highly experienced Board and management aim to grow the value of the Company's coking coal projects to benefit shareholders by leveraging innovation and maximising the assets and network of the team. An aggressive exploration and development program underpins the business strategy.

Whitehaven Coal Managing Director and CEO Mr Paul Flynn said “With demand for high quality coal outstripping global supply, Whitehaven remains well placed to support energy security through transition and to deliver strong returns for shareholders. Coal prices set a new record during the June quarter and continue to be well supported. Stronger operational performance has enabled us to deliver our FY22 production and sales guidance in spite of a tight labour market and COVID-related absenteeism. Improved operational performance combined with record high coal price will underpin our strongest ever full year result. We expect to report a full year EBITDA of approximately AUD 3.0 billion, subject to final audit.

Whitehaven achieved a record average coal price of AUD 514 per tonne for the quarter and AUD 325 per tonne for FY22

FY22 managed ROM coal production of 20.0 million tonnes and total equity sales of produced coal of 14.2 million was down 2% on FY21 while managed sales of produced coal of 17.6 million tonne was within guidance

Allegiance Coal Reports Strong Results for Apr-Jun 2022

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    29 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Allegiance Coal CEO Mr Jon Romcke said “"The results for the June quarter demonstrate the impact of strong coal prices coupled with improvement in the production capability of both the Black Warrior and New Elk mines where the quarterly ROM production figures were the best on record since Allegiance commenced operations. Unfortunately, the ability of the mine to port logistics chain to keep pace with production has affected the timeliness of cashflow receipts for the Company from sales and inventory finance arrangements. We are working to address the logistics constraints and improve the working capital position at Allegiance. As we manage the challenges of our assets, the Board has commenced a strategic review with the purpose of assessing the optimal approach to each of its assets and the overall liquidity profile of the Company.”

Run-of-mine coal production for June quarter across the Group totalled 220kt against 148KT for March quarter, an increase of 48% continuing the strong upward trend, but still considerably below our target. Black Warrior ROM coal production for June quarter totalled 85KT compared to 56KT in the prior quarter while New Elk ROM coal production for June quarter totalled 135KT compared to 92KT for the prior quarter.

Average coal sales prices in June quarter were USD 258 per tonne against USD 261 per tonne in the prior quarter ranging from USD360 per tonne for high-vol A to USD 222 per tonne for a trial cargo of high-vol B product.

Coal sales revenue for June quarter totalled USD 32.1 million compared to USD 14.5 million in the prior quarter.

Ongoing delays at McDuffie Coal Terminal caused a New Elk 80KT vessel scheduled to load on 25 June to be delayed with loading now scheduled in July.

Allegiance Coal is a publicly listed Australian company focused on the development, operation and supply of steel making coal to the seaborne market. With operating mines in southeast Colorado, central Alabama, as well as a development project in northwest British Columbia, Allegiance is well placed to supply steel making coal to both the Pacific and Atlantic markets.

Whitehaven Coal Update on Sunnyside Rehabilitation

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    29 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Rehabilitation is well underway at Sunnyside, with vegetation now established at the former open-cut mine located 15 kilometres west of Gunnedah in North West NSW. The mine was operational between 2008 and 2012, followed by a period when operations halted before resuming operations from 2017. The site transitioned to decommissioning and final rehabilitation in late 2019.

Whilst rehabilitation has been undertaken progressively over the life of the mine, bulk earthworks within the void could only be undertaken when operations ceased. This has included hauling overburden to backfill the void, shaping the landform, and placing and spreading soil and seed mix. Other activities included demolition and removal of all fixed infrastructure and additional bulk earthworks to reshape the overburden dump.

Before mining, the area had predominantly been cleared for agricultural cultivation and grazing, with a principally cropping and pastoral land use. The rehabilitation process is intended to return the site to pastures in the flat areas of 54 hectare and woodland of 35.3 hectare on the slopes, to reflect the surrounding vegetation. While the majority will be agricultural land, the rehabilitation strategy also includes enhancing biodiversity – in particular, some areas that were not disturbed by mining are being planted with tree species used by koalas. This is to create movement corridors between separated woodlands.

Now that vegetation has been established, priority activities include maintenance of the rehabilitated landform to ensure it is safe and stable, and to control feral animals and weeds. For the pasture areas, Whitehaven will undertake trials with cattle or sheep into 2023 or 2024, to confirm the land can support grazing.

The ban is introduced for six months during the peak period from 1 August to eliminate the hype for providing coal to the population and energy security of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan introduces a ban on the export of coal by road. The measure is valid for six months. The ban includes hard coal, briquettes, pellets and similar types of solid fuels obtained from hard coal: hard coal, pulverized or non-pulverized, but not agglomerated.

According to the explanation of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, the ban is introduced during the peak period to prevent the boom in providing coal to the population and in order to ensure energy security.

The Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan notes that, based on the data of local executive bodies, they have formed a Plan for the demand for coal products for domestic needs and the population for the period 2022-2023.

Kazakhstan delivered 1.5 million tonnes of coal to the EU in January-May, almost twice as much as in the whole of 2021. Coal exports to neighboring countries also increased significantly, in particular, to the Kyrgyz Republic by 19%, to the Republic of Uzbekistan by 30%.

JSW Supports Individual Coal Buyers from Budryk Mine

Polish coking coal giant Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa has found a way to support the power industry and individual customers by selling coal to individual customers is made directly at the Budryk mine. JSW Management Board has decided to launch the production of coal for energy purposes in the Orzech range. Coal, the supply of which is expected to reach 180 tonnes per day from 16 August is sold at the Budryk mine for individual customers.

Polish coal miner Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa aounced that coal buyer needs to come to the Budryk mine in Ornontowice with own transport and line up in front of the entrance gate. JSW said “Then the buyer submits an appropriate document confirming that there is a suitable coal combustion source at the address indicated. Coal is loaded, the car is loaded onto the scales, where the documents are issued and the payment is proceeded. It should be noted that only cash is accepted at the cash desk. This is the last stage related to the purchase of coal.”

JSW said “A person who wants to purchase coal for several people must have powers of attorney with him, authorizing him to make a legible signature on the buyer's behalf on the invoice, which includes a declaration confirming the purchase and intended use of the coal. In addition, the buyer must provide a document confirming that there is a coal combustion source at the address. If a given transport does not have so-called partitions - people should write a handwritten statement of consent to combined loading.”

JSW added “We would like to remind you that the daily sale of Walnut coal will not exceed 180 tonnes. Each buyer can purchase three tonnes. At the same time, we would like to inform you that Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa will not introduce online sales. It should be emphasized that the company produces coking coal used in the production of steel. However, being aware of the situation on the steam coal market, JSW's management board decided to support individual clients to start producing coal in the Walnut assortment, which can be burned in home stoves.”

This year, JSW will produce 400,000 tons of steam coal more than planned. In total, in 2022, the Company will produce over 2.7 million tons of coal for energy purposes.

    Ukraine bans coal exports
    344 Views

Ukraine’s government has introduced a ban on exports of coal, says the Ministry of Energy.

The decision was made in order to ensure supply for the heating season, in particular, the accumulation of sufficient fuel reserves for thermal generation, the ministry says. “Also, the ban will help prevent abuse and manipulation of the quality of coal that can be used for thermal generation during the heating season, and instead is exported,” it adds.

Coking coal can therefore be considered as a component of the fuel balance for thermal generation in preparation for the autumn-winter period 2022/2023, the Ministry of Energy summarises.

Ukrainian steelmaker Metinvest tells Kallanish it is studying the decision to ban coal exports and how this will influence the activities of the company. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR) did not responded before deadline to requests for comment.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhkoks plant, part of Metinvest, decreased production of blast furnace coke in January-August to 466,700 tonnes, down by 19.3% on-year following raw material shortages.

In July, Metinvest put into operation the new southern longwall 13 of block 10 at Pokrovske coal mine (see Kallanish passim). Coal reserves are estimated at more than 1 million tonnes.

Metinvest's Pokrovske mine continues to produce coking coal and is currently operating four mining sites. The company also managed to find additional markets not only in Ukraine but also in other countries – Slovakia, Hungary, Poland – and is considering the possibility of cooperation with Western European plants. The coal export ban would presumably scupper these plans.

In August, Kazakhstan introduced a ban on exports of coal by road for six months effective 1 August (see Kallanish passim).

Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, AMKR purchased 350,000 tonnes/month of coking coal, with the main supply coming from ArcelorMittal's Kazakhstan-based Temirtau steelworks. Previously, the plant received 30% of the required coal from Kazakhstan, which was shipped by rail through Russia. Now, this option has been removed.
