Equinor Adjusts Assembly Plan for 4 Hywind Tampen Turbines

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

The seven first Hywind Tampen turbines will come on stream this year as planned. The final four will be installed next spring. Supply chain bottlenecks, most notably related to the global market for steel, preclude delivery of the final four tower sections for the wind turbines until September 2022. This will be too late in relation to the installation weather window for the year, postponing installation of the remaining four turbines until next year.

Once Hywind Tampen is completed, it will be the world's largest floating wind farm and the first to supply electricity to oil and gas platforms.?The wind farm has a system capacity of 88 MW and is expected to meet 35 per cent of the electrical power demand on the Gullfaks and Snorre fields. The seven first turbines will deliver electricity to both Gullfaks and Snorre and have a capacity of about 60 MW, already making Hywind Tampen the world’s largest floating wind farm.

Siemens Gamesa is the supplier of towers, nacelles and blades, all subject to rigid quality control measures. Deviations in steel quality in four tower sections were found, and corrective actions were immediately implemented. The difficult market situation for steel has however delayed delivery. Siemens Gamesa is working closely with their suppliers and Equinor to expedite all deliveries. The seven turbines already assembled have been thoroughly tested and meet all quality specifications.

Total system capacity of 88 MW. The turbines have been upgraded from 8 to 8.6 MW, making the wind farm more robust.

Siemens Gamesa has celebrated the delivery of green energy from the world’s first turbine equipped with Siemens Gamesa’s RecyclableBlades. The first commercial installation of recyclable wind turbine technology recently took place at RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind power project in Germany. It marks a turning point in the long-term sustainability of offshore wind power.

Wind turbine blades are made up of a combination of materials embedded in resin to form a strong, stiff structure. Utilizing Siemens Gamesa’s market-leading RecyclableBlade technology enables full reclaim of the blade’s components at the end of the product’s lifespan. Separating the resin, fiberglass, and wood, among others, is achieved through using a mild acid solution. The materials can then go into the circular economy, creating new products like suitcases or flat-screen casings without the need to call on more raw resources.

A number of turbines of RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind farm will be equipped with handcrafted Siemens Gamesa B81 RecyclableBlades, each with a length of 81 meters. The project is located 35 km north of the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea. It will be comprised of 38 SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines, generating 342 MW of clean, renewable energy for up to 400,000 German households. This is comparable to a city like Frankfurt am Main.

The RecyclableBlade technology is also available for the 108-meter long B108 blades used on the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine and the massive 115-meter long B115 blades SG 14-236 DD turbines.
