    Outokumpu Monitoring Supplier Transparency

Global stainless steel giant Outokumpu is taking actions to further develop the monitoring of its suppliers and to increase the transparency of its sourcing. After the report of the Finnish NGO Finnwatch in February, the company has also decided to audit Vale, one of its ferronickel suppliers. Outokumpu President and CEO Mr Heikki Malinen said "The Finnwatch report was an important reminder of the importance of responsibility throughout Outokumpu’s supply chain. As the leading provider of sustainable stainless steel, we have set high standards for our suppliers. It is essential for Outokumpu, our customers and the overall society that our raw materials are produced and procured in an ethical and responsible manner. We are committed to further review and develop our policies, terms and conditions as well as our actions from the perspective of social responsibility and human rights, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. To ensure that these requirements are met in practice, we are taking additional measures for monitoring our supply chain. In collaboration with industry sustainability experts representing our stakeholders, we are aiming to further develop the transparency of Outokumpu’s sourcing”, he continues.

After the Finnwatch report, Outokumpu and Vale management representatives have agreed on regular reviews of the situation. Outokumpu has emphasized the importance of complying with the company’s high standards and requirements set for its suppliers. Outokumpu has also decided to conduct an independent audit of Vale’s Onça Puma mine in Brazil as soon as the pandemic regulations allow a visit to the site.

The Brazilian company Vale supplies ferronickel, which is a necessary alloying element for manufacturing certain grades of stainless steel. Ferronickel, that Outokumpu is purchasing externally, makes up a part of nickel in the production of stainless steel. The use of ferronickel is being reduced by increasing the amount of recycled metal, which was 93% in Outokumpu in 2020.

In 2020, Outokumpu had approx. 9,000 suppliers. Top20 suppliers covered 80% of the total direct material spending. All Outokumpu’s suppliers are expected to act according to applicable laws and regulations. They are also expected to comply with the company’s Code of Conduct or similar standards, sign general terms and conditions, and be able to clearly define, document, and share their supply and production control processes including material traceability. Outokumpu monitors its suppliers through self-assessments, screenings, and audits. Results are discussed with suppliers and Outokumpu monitors the implementation of corrective actions. If the situation continues without progress, Outokumpu can discontinue purchasing from the supplier.

    Published on :
    13 Oct, 2021, 4:04 am

Stainless steel maker Outokumpu announced last week that it was able to restart the production in Dahlerbrück again and most of production lines in the mill are now back in operation. The heavy thunderstorms and record rainfall that Germany experienced in the mid of July had impacted Outokumpu’s cold-rolling mill in Dahlerbrück. Due to water ingress into the operating lines the production had to be temporarily stopped.

Dahlerbrück cold-rolling mill produces precision strip, employs some 160 people, and represents less than 1% of Outokumpu Group’s total production.

Outokumpu to Reduce CO2 Emissions in Sea Transports

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Dec, 2021, 5:17 am

Outokumpu has agreed with its long-term transport partner Finnish shipping company Langh Ship to replace the current three cargo vessels with new ships. The ships transport our coils from mill in Tornio in Finland to European hub in Terneuzen in the Netherlands and return back to Tornio loaded with recycled steel. The first new ship will be taken into use in 2023. The new vessels by Langh Ship are designed to meet Outokumpu’s ambitious sustainability targets in minimizing emissions and to comply with upcoming environmental regulation. The design has been developed in close cooperation between Outokumpu and Langh Ship.

Outokumpu cargo ships take a one tour between Tornio and Terneuzen in two weeks and they transport some 1.6 million tonnes of cargo each year. With the new vessels, the capacity of each vessel rises to 7,250 tonnes from the current 6,000 tonnes, increasing the capacity of our transport ships by 100,000 tonnes. Outokumpu vessels transport nearly half of the recycled steel used in Tornio.

Outokumpu’s long-term climate target is to reduce its direct and indirect CO2 emissions as well as those of its supply chain (scopes 1, 2 and 3) to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Outokumpu has this year committed to a more stringent climate target by the Science Based Targets initiative to keep the global warming below 1.5 degrees. To this end, Outokumpu will further reduce its CO2 emissions by 2030, approximately by 30% compared to 2020. In the beginning, the ships run on liquefied natural gas, but that can be directly changed to liquefied biogas without any changes.

    Published on :
    21 Feb, 2022, 5:23 am

Global stainless steel giant Outokumpu has signed a 10-year power supply agreement for renewable wind power with Swiss electricity producer Alpiq. The amount of contracted wind power energy corresponds to over 60% of Outokumpu’s electricity consumption at its production sites in Germany. According to the agreement, deliveries will begin in January 2023.

Increasing the share of low-carbon electricity is one of the most important methods for Outokumpu to achieve its ambitious climate targets. In total, the share of low-carbon electricity in Outokumpu's European operations is already over 80%. Earlier, Outokumpu has announced two other 10-year wind power agreements. Together these agreements support Outokumpu’s ambitious science-based climate targets which are aligned with keeping global warming below 1.5 degree Celsius. The updated targets were announced in December 2021 and support Outokumpu’s aim of being the industry leader in sustainability.

Outokumpu Expects Limited Impact of Russia Ukraine War

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    01 Mar, 2022, 5:23 am

Global stainless steel giant Outokumpu announced that it has limited exposure to Russia & Ukraine. It said “Outokumpu has been closely following the developments in Ukraine, and the company regrets to see that the conflict has now been escalated into war after Russia’s military attack. Outokumpu does not have employees or subsidiaries in neither of the countries. In the short term, Outokumpu does not expect any material impacts from the situation on its business and operations. If the situation continues, it could impact Outokumpu’s procurement of raw materials and energy gases.”

    1. Outokumpu’s main raw material is recycled steel which accounts for more than 90% of production. There is no dependency on Russia or Ukraine in recycled steel and only a limited amount of total nickel requirements is currently sourced from Russia. Supplies of additional raw materials have only a limited exposure to Russian origin materials and mitigation actions are already in place to resource such materials.

    2. Outokumpu acquires energy gases in the European market, Russia being one of the indirect supplier countries. Alternative sources are being tested.

    3. Outokumpu’s ferrochrome sources are independent, as we have our own chrome mine and ferrochrome production in Finland.

    4. Outokumpu has an indirect stake in the Fennovoima nuclear plant project in Finland driven by Russian-owned company Rosatom. Outokumpu stated in its financial statements release that the fair value of the Fennovoima project was decreased to zero due to increased project risk.

Members of the Christian Democratic Union parliamentary group in North Rhine-Westphalia met with Outokumpu representatives at the Outokumpu mill in Krefeld in Germany to discuss topics that are currently concerning the steel industry. In addition to aspects of sustainability, the discussions focused on the company's products and customers. Outokumpu has made numerous investments in modernizing production lines and infrastructure and initiated new projects in the recent years. For example, the setup of a new production plant that will convert stainless steel scrap into powder is currently in full swing. Such high-quality stainless steel powder is used, amongst others, for the metallic 3D printing of components in the aviation, automotive, oil and gas or tool industries. The new plant is built in cooperation with SMS group and is scheduled to go into operation this summer.

Outokumpu Nirosta GmbH Managing Director &Labor Director Mr Henrik Lehnhardt told "The new powder production plant is just one building block with which we are aligning this location with the future. In the coming years, the entire Industry Park where our mill is located is to be further developed together with the second property owner, Thelen Group, and upgraded by settling new companies."

Sustainability in all production areas, but also in procurement, is of great importance to Outokumpu and one of the core elements of the corporate strategy. Already today, the company's carbon footprint is 70% lower than the global industry average. And last year, Outokumpu committed to the 1.5 degree climate target of the Science Based Targets Initiative and is currently the only stainless steel manufacturer to commit to these ambitious CO2 reductions.

Outokumpu’s Kemi Mine to Reach Carbon Neutrality by 2025

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    14 Jun, 2022, 7:10 am

Global stainless steel giant Outokumpu has established a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality at its Kemi chrome mine by 2025. The roadmap includes several initiatives that will decrease the mine’s emissions towards zero. Carbon neutrality of the Kemi Mine is an important step in achieving Outokumpu’s ambitious science-based climate targets. The three main factors to reach carbon neutrality at the Kemi Mine are the utilization of carbon free electricity, using biofuels in transportation and machinery as well as replacing natural gas and propane gas with biogas in heating. Mining machinery electrification will also be extended to reduce the need for fuels.

Outokumpu’s Kemi Mine is the only mine in the EU to produce chrome which is an essential raw material in stainless steel production. Chrome from the Kemi Mine is transported to Outokumpu’s nearby ferrochrome plant in Tornio. The environmental impacts of the underground Kemi Mine are very limited due to the concentration process based on gravity separation without chemicals.

Outokumpu announced its updated climate targets in December 2021. The targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and are aligned with keeping global warming below 1.5 degree Celsius.

Global stainless steel giant Outokumpu has introduced a new product line, emission minimized stainless steel Circle Green, with the lowest carbon footprint in the stainless steel manufacturing industry. Global home of design driven brands for indoor & outdoor living Fiskars Group will be the first company to use this as a raw material in Fiskars branded cookware products made at Fiskars Group’s Sorsakoski Factory in Finland.

Outokumpu and Fiskars Group share a similar broad-scoped approach, ambition, and commitments to sustainability. The companies have committed to stringent climate goals according to the Science Based Targets initiative. Using the emission-minimized stainless steel also supports Fiskars Group’s target of having the majority of the company’s net sales coming from circular products and services by 2030.

The Circle Green production was first of its kind globally, as no other stainless steel manufacturer has been able to produce stainless steel with such low emission levels when taking into account all the climate emissions through the whole production chain (scopes 1, 2 & 3). Outokumpu reviewed and optimized the emissions from each production step from the stainless steel melt process and energy production to transport and raw material production.
