GLOBAL – MANPOWERGROUP OPTIMISTIC ABOUT EUROPE IN 2016

ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) announced that Q4 2015 revenue rose 7.3% in constant currency to USD 4,953.9 million despite falling 3.3% on a USD basis. In France, the company’s largest single market, revenue was up 5.7% in constant currency, however, US revenue fell 5.2%.

ManpowerGroup reported a favorable impact from a lower income tax rate thanks to approval of the US Workers Opportunity Tax Credit in December.

    (USD millions) Q4 2015 Q4 2014 % change % change (constant currency)
    Revenue 4,953.9 5,121.1 -3.3% 7.3%
    Gross profit 851.1 868.8 -2.0% 7.8%
    Gross margin 17.2% 17.0%
    Operating Profit 181.1 193.3 -6.3% 4.7%
Gross profit increased 7.8% on a constant currency basis but operating profit only lifted by 4.7%. The company recorded restructuring charges of $16.4 million before taxes in the fourth quarter mostly relating to severance and office closures in Northern Europe. The company hopes to generate twice the amount of these charges in annualized savings going forward.

Gross profit expanded in all of the company’s four business units (in constant currency). The traditional Manpower staffing unit was the largest contributor to gross margins (65% of the total), and generated improved gross profit of 5%. Experis grew by 17%, ManpowerGroup Solutions grew 10% (decelerating from the prior quarter but with solid demand for RPO and MSP solutions and Proservia), while Right Management improved 15%.

“As you can tell from our near-term outlook, we do see some softening in some markets, but at this time we don’t see this as the beginning of a broad-based global downturn,” Chairman and CEO Jonas Prising said in a conference call with analysts. “Europe should have a good chance of seeing better economic growth in 2016 than in 2015, according to most economists I speak with. And for the US, there may be some slowing, but not significantly different from where we were last year.”

    Revenue by Geography

The strong US dollar impacted revenue relative to several countries. Revenue in Germany got a boost from ManpowerGroup’s acquisition of 7S Group. ManpowerGroup also acquired the Greythorn operations in Australia and Singapore during the year.

The world’s third-largest staffing firm also appointed a new CFO, naming John “Jack” McGinnis to the post. McGinnis comes to ManpowerGroup from Morgan Stanley, where he served as global controller. Prior to Morgan Stanley, McGinnis was CFO at HSBC North America Holdings. Inc.

The new CFO takes on the role effective from 15 February. Former CFO Michael Van Handel will become senior executive VP. Van Handel had served as CFO since 1998 and will remain with the firm at least through 2016.

Looking ahead, Jonas Prising commented: "We are pleased with our solid performance in the 4th quarter, with good top line and bottom line performance, capping off a very good year. We made significant operational and strategic progress during the course of 2015 and are well positioned to further build on this progress as we enter the new year”.

"Our workforce solutions are ideally suited to help companies adapt and prosper in a volatile and uncertain environment, and at the same time help millions of individuals find meaningful employment all over the world. That is the foundation of our confidence and passion for our business in 2016 and beyond”.

ManpowerGroup forecasts total revenue to rise 1% to 3% year over year in the first quarter of 2016. The increase in constant currency would be in the range of 5% to 7%, similar to Q4 2015. The company expects a weaker gross margin of 16.7% compared to 16.9%.

ManpowerGroup closed at USD 71.86 yesterday, a decline of 0.86% during the course of the day and 2.72% above its 52-week low of 69.96, set on 20 January 2016. The company had a market cap of USD 5.29 billion.
