Nokia is exploring the sale of its maps business Here in order to focus on mobile network equipment, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Nokia has reached out to potential buyers including Uber and private-equity firms, the report said. A group of German carmakers has also shown interest, and bids for the unit are expected as soon as this month.

Here is valued at about EUR 2 billion, according to Nokia’s financial reports. The company reported annual sales of EUR 970 million and an operating loss of EUR 1.24 billion in 2014. Proceeds from a sale of the business could go towards reducing debt and acquisitions to strengthen the core business.

Nokia quiet on hearsay over Here sale
    By Nick Wood, Total Telecom
    Monday 13 April 2015
Finnish vendor reportedly reaching out to Uber, private equity, car makers so it can focus on networks business.

Nokia Networks on Monday declined to comment on speculation that it is exploring a potential sale of its Here mapping business.

Unnamed sources cited in a report by Bloomberg late last week claimed that the Finnish equipment maker has contacted a number of possible suitors including taxi-booking app maker Uber and private equity firms, while a group of German car makers has also shown interest. Nokia reportedly wants to sell Here so it can focus on its core networking business.

The report appears to contradict comments made by Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri at Mobile World Congress in March, when he discussed the synergies between Here and the company's network technology.

Four out of five in-car navigation systems in Europe and North America use Nokia's Here technology, and in 2014, 13 million cars were sold with Here maps on board.

Last year, the unit generated net sales of €970 million, up 6% on 2013, but a modest sum compared to the networks division, which turned over €11.2 billion. Here also turned in a €1.24 billion operating loss in 2014, driven primarily by a €1.21 billion impairment charge.

According to Bloomberg, the division is valued at approximately €2 billion. Nokia is working with a financial advisor, and may decide against a sale if it does not receive an adequate offer.

A Nokia spokeswoman declined to comment on the rumour when contacted by Total Telecom.

Gaan alle drie de takken van HERE verkocht worden?

Connecting maps to people, places and things

We are passionate about maps and offer world-class location products and services via three business units:

Consumer (gratis) offers guidance for people whether driving, walking or taking public transit. The HERE smartphone app makes it easy to get around with maps that are available across popular devices and wearables - even without an Internet connection.

Automotive leads the industry, offering a wide range of products and services to enable smart guidance experiences and to make cars more intelligent. We combine highly accurate and fresh location analytics with leading software technology that takes into account personal preferences and driving habits to make driving easier and safer.

Enterprise helps companies better manage their resources by accessing our global and flexible location services such as truck routing and data visualisation.

In all areas, we strive to create sustainable and reliable solutions that not only help our customers keep up with change, but provide opportunities to lead it.

Nokia Considering to Sell HERE? What a Surprise! (not)

Reuters published on Friday a news indicating that “Nokia is considering selling its maps business known as HERE, a source familiar with the matter said… Nokia has hired a financial adviser to explore a sale of the unit, the source added.“

This does not come as a surprise as we have pointed out multiple times since the company sold its handset business to Microsoft.

First there are no synergies between the telecom network equipment business of Nokia and the HERE digital map business; second, the development of the HERE brand as a separate entity has been conceived with that spin-off goal in mind.

Now the question is who and how much? GPS Business News will come back to that in the coming days…

Er is iets gebeurd in de afgelopen weken:

Nokia CEO touts for business with new predictive marketing solution
By Mary Lennighan, Total Telecom, in Barcelona
    Monday 02 March 2015
Equipment maker looks to combine the capabilities of its Networks and Here businesses to capture opportunities in big data, IoT.

Big data and analytics is a key area of focus for a newly restructured Nokia, which on Sunday announced a new predictive marketing solution that it claims can give operators a significant revenue uplift.

"We are back after our restructuring," but as a different company with new products in the portfolio, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said in Barcelona on Sunday.

"We are a powerful innovator and R&D machine," he insisted.

Suri took to the stage on the eve of this year's Mobile World Congress and announced the launch of Nokia predictive marketing, a solution that enables telcos to use the data they can capture from their networks to create digital marketing campaigns.

"It works really well," Suri said, adding that it allows users to create marketing campaigns in hours, rather than days.

"[The solution] helped a customer generate hundreds of millions in new revenue," he said. "I think every operator should order before the week is over."

Predictive marketing brings together the capabilities of Nokia Networks and the vendor's mapping and location business Here.

"[It's] a small taste of what the renewed Nokia…can do," Suri said.

"We are in an excellent position today…and we see a world of opportunity in front of us," he added.

That opportunity will in no small part come from growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) space.

Connected devices will reach "50 billion or more by 2025," Suri predicted. "The programmable world offers tools to help with human wellbeing," he said, referring to healthcare systems, road safety and water management.

"There are many sectors where inefficiencies can be eliminated," he said.
