    Accoya® Bridges Southport Marina

650 bespoke wooden spindles crafted from Accoya®
Spindles and handrails formed to match the original design of the 1930’s bridge
Accoya chosen as it is the most suitable material for permanent outdoor exposure

650 bespoke wooden spindles have been carefully crafted from Accoya® for the restoration of the venetian-style Marina Bridge in the English seaside town of Southport.

Accoya, the world-leading modified wood product manufactured by Accsys Technologies, was also used to create handrails with an intricately curved radius matching the rise and fall of the bridge’s walkway.

The impressive 1930’s structure connects the town centre to the promenade and restoration was required earlier this year as the original wood had become worn from years of weathering and damage from the elements.

As part of a larger £5.5m marina redevelopment project, UK-based Dresser Mouldings was appointed to supply wood for the upgrading of the structure. The firm specified Accoya for the project, recognising its outstanding properties of stability and durability which result from Accsys Technologies’ propriety acetylation technology.

Initial plans proposed replacing the original cedar spindles with Cedar or Iroko wood, however the kiln drying process for Cedar is substantial and would have had an impact on the progress of the restoration. Furthermore Dresser Mouldings were keen to use FSC® certified wood for the bridge, and therefore Iroko was not suitable.

Each spindle was created by bonding two pieces of 75x150mm Accoya together to produce 150x150mm pillars. These were then machined using the most technologically advanced CNC equipment to accurately cut each spindle to size.

Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill home undergoing refurbishment
Accoya chosen to replace exiting porch wood
House set to reopen to visitors in June 2015

The United States National Park Service has chosen Accoya, the world-leading acetylated wood manufactured by Accsys Technologies, for a section of the refurbishment of the iconic Sagamore Hill National Historic Site at Oyster Bay, Long Island.

Accoya has been selected to replace the impressive, wraparound porch of the Queen Anne-style property of the 26th President Theodore Roosevelt, which had become worn following weathering and the footfall of thousands of visitors each year.
The renovation of the porch is part of a full-scale restoration project initiated by the National Park Service to one of the United States’ most important historical sites. Sagamore Hill was where Roosevelt hosted many of the world’s most important dignitaries during his seven summers as President, with the ‘Summer White House’ now a popular destination for those keen to learn more about the history of one of America’s most popular leaders.

The renovation follows several smaller ‘patchwork’ projects which have taken place to the building over the years and aims to preserve the property for many future generations of visitors. The current rehabilitation is aimed at avoiding ongoing smaller scale works at the site in future.

As one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market, Accoya was chosen for the porch renovation of Roosevelt’s former home as it delivers outstanding levels of performance, dimensional stability and industry leading Class 1 durability.

Susan Sarna, Museum Curator at the National Park Service said: “In caring for such an important property we needed to ensure that we used the highest quality, environmentally friendly products which were sympathetic to the original porch materials of the site. In addition, given the negative impact that renovation works have on visitor experience, we wanted to use a product that would allow us to reduce ongoing maintenance at the site.

Accoya is longer lasting than competitor products, is less likely to warp or split, and due to its increased stability, paint coatings last three to four times longer than on traditional wood. Using Accoya was therefore an easy to decision to make.”

Tom Murray, of Accoya distributor Rex Lumber said: “The importance of the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site to the US means that the National Park Authority had to think carefully about the products used in the renovation. Products needed to be long lasting and aesthetically pleasing, and the fact that Accoya has been used at the site is testament to its quality. Thorough testing around the world has shown that Accoya is, hard-wearing, stable, durable and sustainable. This makes it perfect for projects of importance and prestige such as at Sagamore Hill.”

ben ook benieuwd hoeveel m^3 enno heeft verkocht.

Enno Roggemann will work closely with Accsys to build Accoya^® wood's market
penetration and is expected to sell a minimum of 40,000 m^3 of Accoya^® over the next five years.

Dit was in 2010 en ook hopen dat accoya la bella een vlucht gaat nemen als de solvay fabriek er staat.

    RIBA CPDs

Durable, Sustainable Timber Doors, Windows and Cladding with a Minimum Service Life of 60 Years is a RIBA-registered CPD presentation.

Accsys Technologies offers a CPD presentation on the subject of acetylated wood, which is sold under the brand name Accoya. Acetylated wood is produced from modifying a softwood by a benign process called acetylation to produce a wood that is very durable (i.e. rot resistant) and very stable, to the extent that it outperforms hardwood species.

Since coatings last longer on acetylated wood than on unmodified wood species, it also offers a lower maintenance option for those who want to use wood. Acetylated wood can be used to manufacture any products that might normally be made from wood; for example windows, doors, cladding, decking, outdoor furniture, etc. It is particularly suited to exterior applications since this is where its performance benefits are most apparent.

If you would like to organise your own Architectural CPD, please download this CPD information sheet: RIBA CPDs

Accsys and Solvay are working together to complete the various full agreements to implement the binding term sheet. The first of these agreements, in respect of marketing, is expected to be entered into by the end of December 2014 with the remaining agreements following in 2015.
