Aluminium steals a march on steel in cars
    m.theaustralian.com.au/business/wall-...

Alcoa, which reports its results tomorrow, has seen its stock jump by more than 80 per cent since the start of October — with no parallel increase in consensus earnings estimates — due in part to excitement about aluminium’s expanding opportunities.

Metals Making Comeback Lately - optionsXpress

    Monday July 7, 2014 10:50 AM

There has been a stronger tone in a number of base and precious metals lately, says Mike Zarembski, senior commodities analyst with optionsXpress. “Don’t look now but one of the least loved commodity sectors by trader and analysts to start 2014— precious metals – (is) starting to display rather bullish price moves,” he says. Palladium has led the charge on tight supplies and improving auto sales, he says. “However, some of the biggest surprises are in the performance of gold and silver of late,” he says. “Here, analysts note that gold ETF (exchange-traded-fund) purchases have increased and now stand at their highest levels since mid- April, as buyers are starting to turn once again towards gold as a diversification from equities and bonds due to rising global tensions especially in the Middle East, as well as, a potential hedge against rising inflation. Even the base-metals sector is starting to show some support, especially aluminum, zinc and copper. Traders view a potential Chinese economic rebound, which is being spurred by data showing manufacturing expanding at its fastest pace so far this year, along with continued improvement in U.S employment, which may encourage expansion in the industrial sector and in turn help support demand for industrial metals.”

Aluminum is finally showing some life. Meanwhile, the stock of aluminum related companies, such as Alcoa, is skyrocketing. It seems like high expectations on the future use of aluminum in automobile and aerospace sectors is making these stocks surge.

    Continued Growth Across End Markets

Alcoa continues to project 2014 global aerospace growth of 8 to 9 percent driven by robust demand for both large commercial aircraft and regional jets. The Company’s projected 2014 automotive growth of 1 to 4 percent, packaging growth of 2 to 3 percent, and building and construction growth of 4 to 6 percent, remain unchanged. In the industrial gas turbine market, the Company’s projected decline of 8 to 12 percent, on lower orders for new gas turbines and spare parts, also remains unchanged.

Alcoa increased its 2014 estimate for the North America commercial transportation market to a range of 10 to 14 percent, from a previous range of 5 to 9 percent in the first quarter. The higher estimate is based in part on rising truck orders and backlogs. Globally, Alcoa continues to expect a steady commercial transportation market in 2014 of -1 to 3 percent due to weakness in the European market.

Additionally, Alcoa reaffirmed its 7 percent global aluminum demand growth projection for 2014.

For 2014, the Company sees a global aluminum deficit of 930,000 metric tons, an increase from a deficit of 730,000 metric tons estimated in the first quarter. Alcoa also sees a tightening of the alumina market with a surplus declining from 2,257,000 metric tons in the first quarter to 824,000 metric tons in second quarter 2014.
