    Published on :
    06 Oct, 2021, 6:30 am

McDermott has joined AquaVentus, a growing consortium of more than 70 companies, organizations and research institutions collaborating toward green hydrogen energy production in the North Sea. AquaVentus unites international industry leaders with a shared vision for advancing hydrogen's role as a low-carbon, affordable energy solution-combining their unique expertise to make that future a reality.

AquaVentus aims to develop 10 gigawatts of generation capacity for green hydrogen from offshore wind turbines in the North Sea by 2035. The expectation is that the wind power generated will be used to produce up to one million tons of production capacity of green hydrogen, which will be used to decarbonize Heligoland and transported to land via pipeline.

McDermott's involvement will bring the consortium comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) experience in the onshore, offshore, subsea and storage markets, from concept to completion.

Aquaventus is a strong consortium that currently includes over 70 leading international companies, organizations and research institutions. Together we want to make a decisive contribution to the implementation of the German and European hydrogen strategy. The aim of AquaVentus is to generate one million tons of green hydrogen with 10 GW of electrolysis capacity from offshore wind energy in the North Sea by 2035. The project family around the AquaVentus initiative includes numerous sub-projects. They range from the production of hydrogen in the North Sea to its transport to customers on the mainland. Coordinated consortia synchronize demand and generation and thus enable a rapid market ramp-up. The AquaVentus project family includes, for example: the development of offshore wind turbines with integrated hydrogen generation (Aqua-Primus), a large-scale offshore hydrogen park (AquaSector), a central supply pipeline (AquaDuctus), port infrastructures (AquaPortus), a research platform ( AquaCampus) as well as maritime hydrogen-based applications (AquaNavis).

TotalEnergies, Air Liquide and VINCI are combining forces with other large international companies to sponsor the creation of the world’s largest fund exclusively dedicated to clean hydrogen infrastructure solutions. The fund aims to reach 1.5 billion euros and has already secured initial commitments of 800 million euros. Its objective is to accelerate the growth of the clean hydrogen ecosystem by investing in large strategic projects and leveraging the alliance of industrial and financial players.

The clean hydrogen infrastructure fund will invest in the entire value chain of renewable and low carbon hydrogen, in the most promising regions in the Americas, Asia and Europe. It will invest as a partner, alongside other key project developers and/or industry players, in large upstream and downstream clean hydrogen projects. Total commitments to the fund have already reached 800 million euros out of a target of around 1.5 billion euros at signature.

TotalEnergies, Air Liquide, and VINCI Concessions have been at the forefront of setting up and aggregating commitments to this clean hydrogen infrastructure fund. As anchor partners, fully committed to low carbon and renewable hydrogen development, each has pledged to invest 100 million euros. The fund will be managed by Hy24, a brand new 50/50 joint venture between Ardian, a world-leading private investment house and FiveT Hydrogen, a clean hydrogen enabling investment platform. The choice of this fund manager allows to merge with their similar initiative and to add Plug Power as an anchor partner, as well as Chart Industries and Baker Hughes joining together.

LOTTE Chemical has also confirmed its intention to participate as anchor investor, and is the first Asian company to join. The fund expects to attract further investments from large financial players, with AXA as anchor investor. Large international industrial players from North America and Europe, which are strongly committed to carbon neutrality, also intend to join the initiative as non-anchor partners, such as Groupe ADP, Ballard, EDF, and Schaeffler.

With solid industrial expertise and significant investment potential, the clean hydrogen infrastructure fund will have a unique capacity to unlock large scale projects under development and accelerate the scaling up of hydrogen markets. With the announced support of public policies and some use of debt financing, the fund should be able to contribute to the development of hydrogen projects with a total value of about 15 billion euros.

Iberdola’s Ignacio is Chairman of the Renewable Hydrogen Coalition

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    08 Oct, 2021, 6:30 am

The Renewable Hydrogen Coalition has strengthened its leadership with the appointment of Iberdrola group chairman and CEO Mr Ignacio Galán as chairman of the alliance and Sunfire founder and CEO Nils Aldag as vice-chairman for the next 18 months, to help shape the necessary regulatory framework in the European Union. Galán and Aldag will combine their expertise in renewables and electrolysers to coordinate the coalition's efforts to ensure that, with the right policies, renewable hydrogen becomes a competitive alternative to conventional hydrogen during this decade.

Iberdrola's CEO said that “The Renewable Hydrogen Coalition has an important job ahead of it as Europe shapes its policies to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. We have a unique opportunity to ensure that Europe leads the world in both technology development and manufacturing associated with renewable hydrogen. The targets set in the Fit for 55 package for the use of renewable hydrogen in priority sectors are extremely positive in order to increase demand. These ambitious targets must be accompanied by equally ambitious tools for implementation, in particular financial support instruments to close the cost gap with fossil-based alternatives and give European purchasers the confidence to switch to renewable hydrogen.”

The Fit for 55 package, launched in July by the European Commission, has set clear targets for the rapid and large-scale deployment of renewable hydrogen in sectors that are difficult to electrify. This roadmap will enable these sectors to achieve significant emission reductions and will boost innovation, job creation and industrial growth in Europe, consolidating the post-COVID-19 green recovery.

Winning the clean technology race and securing the pioneering advantage in renewable hydrogen requires strong collaboration between public and private actors. The Renewable Hydrogen Coalition stands ready to work with European policy makers to build the regulatory tools that will enable Europe to achieve its goals.

Thyssenkrupp Participating in 3 Hydrogen Projects of BMBF

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    11 Oct, 2021, 4:57 am

German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF is supporting Germany's entry into the hydrogen economy with the hydrogen lead projects, its largest research initiative to date on the subject of the energy transition. Thyssenkrupp is involved in all three hydrogen lead projects and is testing the industrial production, use and system integration of green hydrogen. With these lead projects, the expertise in hydrogen technologies in science, business and civil society is bundled across Germany and thus given the initial spark for the development, conception and implementation of hydrogen solutions on an industrial scale. Within four years, Thyssenkrupp will continue to expand its technology leadership along the entire value chain of green chemicals by 2025. This involves

    1. The series production of large-scale water electrolysers H 2 Giga

    2. The production of synthetic fuels, green ammonia, green methanol and synthetic methane at sea H 2Mare

    3. Hydrogen transport and conversion technologies such as ammonia cracking TransHyDE.

The BMBF will provide thyssenkrupp with almost 8.5 million euros in funding for research and development of large-scale production of alkaline water electrolysis. The aim is on the one hand to use scaling effects and thus to be able to reduce manufacturing costs. On the other hand, an expansion of the previous supply chain by 1 gigawatt electrolysis cells allows the implementation of larger project volumes, so that several gigawatt projects can be carried out at the same time every year.

The H2Giga project INSTALL AWE led by thyssenkrupp focuses on the industrialization of AWE, which is the most developed and marketable technology today and is mainly used for large scale industrial applications. The modular and standardized 20 MW module from thyssenkrupp is also advantageous from an economic and climate protection perspective. In contrast to the compact design of PEM electrolysers, with the AWE single element technology, selective maintenance work can be carried out on individual cells instead of having to replace the entire stack. This saves resources and lowers operating costs.

In the H To this end, thyssenkrupp will work together with its long-term partners such as De Nora and Hoedtke GmbH & Co KG, but will also build on new collaborations. In the H To this end, thyssenkrupp will work together with its long-term partners such as De Nora and Hoedtke GmbH & Co KG, but will also build on new collaborations. In the H2 Giga innovation pool with institutions, universities and small specialized companies with scientific and technical competence in the field of series production, broader research and development topics are examined, which should also drive Thyssenkrupp’s own development.

In the lead project H 2 Mare, the production of hydrogen and downstream products such as synthetic fuels, methanol, ammonia and synthetic methane is to be developed on the high seas. The Power-to-X processes handled by thyssenkrupp include all three of the last-mentioned products. In the H 2 Mare project "PtX-Wind", the company receives funding of 780,000 euros for the development of the fundamentals up to and including engineering.

Thyssenkrupp is also involved in the third lead project TransHyDE and, as an associated partner, considers the potential of the ammonia cracking process. Transporting ammonia as a hydrogen carrier is more profitable, especially over long distances. After green ammonia has been transported and liquid ammonia has been converted back into its components hydrogen and nitrogen at locations where hydrogen is required, the hydrogen produced in this way can be put to direct use. Possible applications are, for example, use in steelworks, as a green feed for chemical plants or in fuel cells in order to be converted into electrical energy.

Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers offers world-leading technologies for highly efficient electrolysis systems. The company, a joint venture with Industrie De Nora, has already installed more than 600 projects and electrochemical systems with a total output of over 10 gigawatts worldwide. With the water electrolysis technology for the production of green hydrogen, it offers an innovative solution for the industrial scale.

The Industry Group was formed in February 2019 with the goal of addressing hydrogen fueling hardware challenges of achieving the fueling speeds that are needed for heavy-duty applications today. Other goals include testing and evaluating the hardware’s performance and standardizing the connector design to ensure adoptability throughout the world. This builds upon the collaboration of the hydrogen industry that achieved a global standard fueling interface for light-duty fuel cell electric vehicles.

Tatsuno, an international hydrogen fuel equipment provider founded in 1911, is designing and developing vehicle receptacle and dispenser nozzle and breakaway components, whereas Transfer Oil, considered one of the most valued manufacturers of reinforced thermoplastic hoses in the industry, is leading the design and development of a hydrogen dispenser fueling hose. The fueling hardware is anticipated to support average hydrogen fueling rates of 10kg/min which is in line with the US Department of Energy’s Technical Targets for Hydrogen-Fueled Long-Haul Tractor-Trailer Trucks. Testing is planned at an independent test facility and scheduled to commence in Q4 2021, with preliminary performance and safety results available in Q1 2022.

Hyundai Engineering has signed a business agreement with Hyundai Steel, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Korea Midland Power for the first time in Korea to commercialize hydrogen-fueled turbine power generation through 100 percent hydrogen combustion. The MOU aims to build and commercialize a new power plant with an 80MW mid-size hydrogen power turbine in Dangjin, South Chungcheong province, by 2027.

Hyundai Engineering is in charge of the power plant EPC including design and construction as well as the role of the host of the hydrogen power turbine power plant.

Hyundai Steel will supply hydrogen produced at the hydrogen plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong province and provide a site for the construction of a hydrogen-powered turbine power plant.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is developing an 80MW mid-size hydrogen power turbine including a combustor that burns 100 percent hydrogen.

Hydrogen-fueled turbine power generation is a method of generating electricity by using 100 percent hydrogen as fuel in a gas turbine. Compared to the existing LNG combined cycle power plant, it does not emit carbon at all.

Twenty-four major employers in North West England and North East Wales have formally agreed to work with the HyNet low carbon cluster, including those from the food, ceramics, paper, glass and automotive sectors. The UK's leading decarbonisation cluster project, which spans the Liverpool City Region and Greater Manchester Combined Authority areas, along with Warrington, Cheshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, will supply low carbon hydrogen to fuel businesses and heat homes across the region - enabling a switch away from fossil fuels starting in 2025.

The organisations see switching to low carbon hydrogen as a critical opportunity both to rapidly cut carbon dioxide emissions, helping the UK's journey to Net Zero, and to manufacture low carbon products, driving value for the business and its customers. Each company has signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding' with the intent of receiving a future network connection and supply of hydrogen from the HyNet project.

HyNet is ideally located close to both the existing infrastructure and the natural assets required to produce and store hydrogen. The North West of England and North Wales is the region which has the UK's largest number of people employed in the manufacturing sector, and has the skills base and determination to put the UK at the heart of the hydrogen economy.

HyNet has recently run a 'global first' trial using hydrogen to produce sheet glass using 100% hydrogen at Pilkington Glass in St Helens. The team will shortly run a similar trial at Unilever's Port Sunlight manufacturing facility. These will provide confidence that these companies and others can safely switch to HyNet low carbon hydrogen as soon as it is available.
