U.S. Stocks Advance as Bernanke Says Economic Growth Expected to Pick Up

    By Rita Nazareth - Nov 2, 2011 7:57 PM GMT+0100
U.S. stocks rose, following a two-day drop in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said economic growth is expected to pick up and the central bank is prepared to use monetary tools if necessary to safeguard the recovery.

Bank of America Corp. (BAC) rallied 3.9 percent to pace gains among financial shares. MasterCard Inc. (MA) jumped 6 percent as profit beat estimates. MF Global Holdings Ltd. tumbled 80 percent in its first day of over-the-counter trading after the futures brokerage filed for bankruptcy, prompting the New York Stock Exchange to delist the shares.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 1.4 percent to 1,234.92 as of 2:56 p.m. in New York. The gauge dropped 5.2 percent over the previous two days, the most in almost a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 171.80 points, or 1.5 percent, to 11,829.76 today.

“They are going with no rocking of the boat as long as the improvement continues,” Bruce McCain, who helps oversee about $20 billion as chief investment strategist at the private- banking unit of KeyCorp in Cleveland, said in a phone interview. “The economy has exceeded expectations. There’s a lot more concern at this point that the Fed would try too hard to juice up things and perhaps complicate an inflation picture that clearly is becoming better.”

Yesterday’s decline followed an 11 percent rally in October, the best monthly gain for the S&P 500 since 1991. The drop cut the index’s price to 12.8 times reported earnings, 22 percent below its five-decade average of 16.4, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

    ‘Downside Risks’

Bernanke, in a press briefing, said the drags on the U.S. economy have been more severe than central bankers anticipated. “The housing sector is a very important sector,” and “so I do think purchases of mortgage-backed securities is a viable option” to help the industry and the economy, he said. Those purchases are “certainly something we would consider if conditions” are appropriate.

Federal Reserve officials lowered their outlook for U.S. economic growth in 2012 and forecast that unemployment will average from 8.5 percent to 8.7 percent in the final three months of next year.

Forecasts for 2012 growth in U.S. gross domestic product from the five Fed Board members and 12 reserve bank presidents centered around 2.5 percent to 2.9 percent, measured from the fourth quarter of this year to the fourth quarter of next year. For this year, the central tendency forecast for U.S. growth was 1.6 percent to 1.7 percent.

    110,000 Workers

Stocks rose earlier after a private report based on payrolls showed U.S. companies added workers in October. The 110,000 increase followed a revised 116,000 gain the prior month that was larger than previously estimated, ADP Employer Services said today. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for a advance of 100,000.

European leaders racing to prevent their week-old debt crisis strategy from unraveling convene emergency talks today to tell Greece there is no alternative to the budget cuts imposed in the bailout plan. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, his hold on power weakening, was summoned to Cannes on the eve of a Group of 20 summit where he will hear from French President Nicolas Sarkozy that the “only way to resolve Greek debt problems” is through a deal hammered out last week.

    Confidence Vote

Papandreou triggered the latest upheaval in the two-year- long crisis by abruptly announcing on Oct. 31 a parliamentary confidence vote and his desire to hold a referendum on the rescue pact.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Cabinet will meet in Rome tonight at 8 p.m., his office said in an e-mailed statement. Transport Minister Altero Matteoli said the Cabinet will pass a decree to accelerate economic reforms, Ansa reported today, citing a phone interview.

Whether the U.S. economy falls into a recession or expands more slowly matters little when it comes to stock-market strategy, according to Richard Bernstein, chief executive officer of Richard Bernstein Advisors LLC.

Playing defense has been more rewarding in the past six months than investing in shares of cyclical companies, which are more susceptible to changes in the pace of economic expansion. Makers of food, beverages, tobacco and other consumer staples are in the defensive category, along with health-care, telephone and utility stocks.

“Investors seem to spend too much time trying to ascertain the probability of a recession occurring,” Bernstein wrote in a report two days ago. A slowdown is enough to justify defensive strategies, favoring shares of companies whose sales and earnings growth is relatively stable, the report said.

What 'Dr. Copper' says about the economy

Gold has been getting all the attention lately, rocketing to new highs as fears over European debt have grown to fever pitch. But many Wall Street insiders have been preoccupied with the vagaries of another, less-glamorous metal: copper.

After rising 193% from its 2008 low, the red metal had fallen 21% through May 17. And after a deep sell-off that day, copper futures dropped under their 200-day moving average for the first time since summer 2008 -- a critical line of demarcation that normally marks the transition from bull market to bear market.
