Arriva and SNCF in talks on European group
    Angela Jameson, Industrial Correspondent

Arriva, the UK transport operator, is in talks with SNCF, the French state-owned rail operator, over moves to create a European transport group with revenues of about €6 billion.

Arriva, which has a significant presence in continental Europe, said yesterday that it was in very early talks with SNCF over a combination of Arriva and all, or part of, Keolis, its transportation business.

Shares in Arriva jumped sharply in morning trading after news of the talks was reported in the French press, before falling back, eventually closing up 2.9 per cent at 481½p.

Davos: A tug from Zug as financiers plot UK exodus
Katherine Griffiths, Miles Costello Patrick Hosking

Senior financiers are using top-level meetings in Davos to warn that the hostile tax regime in Britain will persuade many bankers to move to Switzerland.

The group is expected to use a meeting with Alistair Darling today to complain about the “victimisation” of the banking industry and to say that the looming rise in top rate income tax, the 50 per cent bonus tax and the rule that 60 per cent of bonuses must be deferred for anyone earning more than £1 million make the UK far less attractive than other countries.

Davos: China defends currency against Western sniping
    Helen Power

Li Keqiang, the Chinese Vice-Premier, moved to head off concerns that China’s undervalued currency was perpetuating global economic problems.

In a rare public appearance, Mr Li told delegates that his country’s huge trade surplus fell by $100 billion (£62 billion) in 2008, adding that the Government was taking steps to stimulate domestic demand and boost the country’s appetite for imports.

Although Mr Li did not specifically refer to China’s currency, his comments were a response to complaints by President Sarkozy of France and other Western politicians that the undervalued yuan creates an uneven playing field and contributes to soaring trade deficits in the West.

Greece berates the speculators for using it as a ‘weak link’ in attack on eurozone
    Carl Mortished, World Business Editor

The Greek Prime Minister accused speculators of targeting the country as a “weak link” in the euro yesterday, as the value of Greek bonds plunged on financial markets.

The risk premium on the yield of Greek government debt rose to a new record of 4.05 per cent above the yield on the benchmark German bund.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, George Papandreou said: “This is an attack on the eurozone by certain other interests, political or financial, and often countries are being used as the weak link, if you like, of the eurozone.”

Banks caught between Zug and a hard place
    David Wighton: Business Editor’s Commentary

Davos may be making the headlines this week. But among many of the bankers here, the talk is not of Davos but of Zug. The obscure canton 100 miles down the road is one of the most aggressive contestants in the competition to offer the lowest level of personal taxation for hard-pressed bankers. For City big shots facing 50 per cent tax on next year’s bonus — most of which will be paid in shares that they can’t touch for years — the 10 per cent on offer from the nice people in Zug can look tempting.

Tech en macro verzuren sfeer in New York

India May Debate Rate Increase, Raise Reserve Ratio (Update1)

By Cherian Thomas and Manish Modi

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- India’s central bank may debate whether to start raising interest rates today and will probably ask banks to set aside more cash to temper inflation as the second-fastest growing major economy accelerates.

The Reserve Bank of India may raise the cash reserve ratio to 5.5 percent from 5 percent, the first increase since 2008, according to the median forecast of 25 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. Seven respondents said the benchmark reverse repurchase rate may rise to 3.5 percent from 3.25 percent, while the rest see no change.
