Oregon’s largest regional public transit provider TriMet aims to make the Portland metro area more liveable by easing traffic congestion and reducing air pollution. Therefore, the agency recently received its first refurbished city bus with a Voith Electrical Drive System. The 60-foot articulated New Flyer bus was converted from a conventional bus with an internal combustion engine to a fully electric vehicle supplied by Complete Coach Works. With the VEDS powering the bus, TriMet will be extensively evaluating system capabilities that can increase range up to 25 percent higher than other electric drive systems with similar sized battery packs in the North American market. This way, they hope to operate an articulated electric bus on longer routes throughout the entire service day. TriMet will be the first operator to deploy the system in the USA. This prototype of a converted articulated bus was delivered to TriMet end of September. The agency has begun extensive testing and evaluation of the technology on Portland metro area’s terrain.

In this case, the Voith E-Drive was fully imported. Voith already has plans to have the VEDS “Buy America” compliant for further projects in the near future. The concept supports battery systems from a wide range of manufacturers and is also enabled for use in fuel cell electric vehicle drivetrains. Thanks to its compact design, the VEDS requires no additional installation space in chassis designed for combustion engines. It is therefore very easy to convert existing vehicle fleets with conventional diesel, hybrid or gas drives. The system is based on a powerful, water-cooled, permanent magnet motor with a high-efficiency inverter. There is no need for a separate transmission, resulting in a positive effect on power availability, energy consumption, range and noise emissions. The basis for these benefits is the integrated approach of the VEDS. All system components have been perfectly matched to one another from the beginning and work together optimally. This facilitates integration into the vehicle and ensures a high level of reliability. The VEDS can also be used flexibly in various platforms.

Scania Builds Electrified Truck for Jula Logistics

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    08 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

The Swedish company Jula Logistics uses a 32 metres Scania truck as High Capacity Transport to be able to bring more cargo for each transport and consequently lower emissions. Now it’s time for the next step: the huge truck will be powered by electricity. This is the latest example of a sustainable transport solution that Scania develops in close collaboration with a progressive customer.

European trucks are allowed to carry 40 tonnes and bring a 12 metres container. Since 2015, Jula Logistics uses a vehicle twice that size, which means it carries two containers and is 32 metres long. This truck has a total weight of 64 tonnes, including load and trailer. By carrying a bigger cargo in each transport, and thereby decreasing the number of times it has to drive between the warehouse and loading port each day, Jula Logistics saves 70 percent on energy and emissions per transported unit. Now, the truck will be powered by electricity, and will be put into operation sometimes the first half of 2022.

Scania works with both prototypes and new business models, and together with customers and other partners, future solutions are simulated and realised. The solution that Scania has assisted Jula Logistics with enables the extra long and heavy vehicle to take the round-trip from where the train stops in Falköping to the warehouse in Skara a couple of times, a distance that measures 60 kilometres.

A detailed overview of energy consumption, an optimised route schedule and the need to charge is meticulously simulated beforehand to enable this transport flow. Once the truck is in operation, it has a positive influence from day one when it comes to the adjustment of Jula’s distribution flow. A vital part in the collaboration with Jula Logistics will be to optimise the charging process, related infrastructure and the complete flow in due time.

Scania and Jula Group are aiming for a long-term partnership with extensive electrification of the transport flows that Jula Logistics runs. The electrification of this 32 metres Scania truck is just the beginning.

Why are electric cars so expensive?

Q: Why are electric vehicles so expensive?

A: There’s no simple answer to the question “Why are EVs so expensive?” EVs are more expensive for a variety of different reasons: car manufacturers trying to recoup some of the billions they’ve spent on research and development, batteries being expensive to produce, and a lack of consumer demand are all factors that make them more costly.

If you’re relatively new to the hot topic of electric vehicles (EVs), you may rightly wonder to yourself, “Are electric cars more expensive than petrol-powered internal combustion engined cars?”

Duurdere autobatterijen zetten markt elektrische wagens onder druk
    Marc Horckmans 17 uur geleden

Batteries are the backbone of our electric future. Lithium production will lag demand

Growth in lithium demand due to increased EV battery production is expected to significantly outpace the capacity of lithium mines. Global demand for lithium could be as much as nearly 1,750,000 metric tons more than available supply by 2030.

As EV sales continue to grow, some of the materials used in lithium-ion batteries are expected to face shortages in the near term. There’s an ample supply of lithium available around the world—the issue is that mining operations aren’t scaling quickly enough to meet the demand.

“The materials we’re talking about are available and are actually available in large quantities. “The resource issues in the past have been because of one of two things: Either the market was so small that nobody had bothered to develop it, so it was really hard to find people who were producing that material, or there were political issues.”

And it’s not just lithium. Mining enough of the other materials currently key to many cathodes, like nickel and cobalt, is also a challenge to the battery supply chain.

Cobalt in particular is often the hardest to source. It is less abundant than lithium or nickel and 70% of the world’s cobalt is produced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where many mining operations have severe human rights issues.

“Companies have been pushing toward less and less cobalt,” said Richard Wang, founder and CEO of battery startup Cuberg. “It’s really nickel, I think, that is going to become the biggest challenge long-term, because most advanced batteries use a large amount of nickel. Nickel is not as rare as cobalt, but it’s still kind of expensive, and again, there’s a lot of short-term supply issues with mining capacity not keeping up with battery manufacturing.”

SES says its next-gen battery could be in cars by 2025

The Singapore-based battery-maker unveiled the first lithium-metal battery big enough to power a car, but has some hurdles to clear before it’s available to all.

While lithium-ion batteries are industry standard for EVs today, automakers are placing bets on companies racing to develop the “holy grail” of EV power: lithium-metal batteries.

So far, no one has put a lithium-metal battery into a car, but one company says it has moved closer to that goal.

Lithium-metal batteries are much lighter than the lithium-ion batteries used in EVs today. With higher energy density, these batteries could offer increased range and faster charging—capable of driving 500 to 600 miles on a single charge (compared to a top EV range of around 400 miles in 2020) and cutting charge time down from hours to minutes.

SES, a Singapore–based battery maker, announced today that it has built a 107 amp hour (Ah) hybrid lithium-metal battery—the largest in the world and the first big enough to power an electric vehicle.

“Until today, all these next-gen lithium-metal batteries that people have seen are with these very small cells, up to the size of an iPhone battery,” SES founder and CEO Qichao Hu told Emerging Tech Brew. iPhone batteries are about 4 to 6 Ah, but to power an EV, these batteries need to be about 25 times that size.

“Being able to demonstrate these large-format liquid-based cells with lithium-metal anodes is something that hasn’t really been done before, so showing that working at an automotive-performance level is definitely impressive," James Frith, BloombergNEF's lead analyst on energy storage, told us.

While the EV world had estimated next-generation batteries wouldn’t make it onto the roads until at least 2030, SES is now aiming to have a lithium-metal battery ready for commercially sold cars by 2025, Hu said. To make that happen, SES announced plans to build a 300,000 square-foot lithium-metal battery facility in Shanghai by 2023.

The company began construction on the Shanghai Giga facility in Q3. Hu says it will be able to produce 1 Gwh of lithium-metal batteries annually once completed.

“Compared to lithium ion, which has hundreds of gigawatt hours of capacity globally, it doesn’t seem like a lot. But for lithium metal it’s by far the largest,” he said.

    Testing, testing

Before a battery makes it into consumer vehicles, it has to go through a testing process with three rounds of samples—A, B, and C—prior to commercialization that typically takes about five years.

SES is working with GM and Hyundai to deliver A samples of its battery next year, making it the only company that has entered into joint development of lithium-metal batteries with automakers. A samples are for demonstration purposes only—once the company is able to deliver B samples and C samples, Hu said the company will begin building larger plants and entering into contracts with automakers.

Batteries from Webasto Power Innovative E-Shuttle in France

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    11 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

French trucking company Lohr Industries will be launching the fully electric and modular Cristal shuttle system in four cities in France before the end of 2021. The vehicles will be powered by batteries from Webasto, one of the world’s 100 largest automotive suppliers. Some German cities have also already signaled their interest. During rush hour periods, the Cristal will be used in so-called shuttle mode, with two to four vehicles coupled together under the guidance of a professional driver. This allows up to 64 people to be transported at speeds approaching 31 miles per hour. Coupling and uncoupling the shuttles is a simple, automated process which takes less than a minute. Outside of peak hours, or for alternative on-demand transport applications, the Cristal can also be used as an individual vehicle to cover the so-called last mile. In France, a valid car driver’s license is all that is required for this.

In the search for a suitable partner to provide the drive batteries for the “Cristal”, the choice quickly fell on Webasto. After all, the roof and parking heater specialist has – within just a few years – also made a name for itself as a leading system provider in the electromobility segment. The Webasto plant in Schierling houses one of the most modern battery system production plants – the highly flexible multi-product-line, which is capable of producing up to 40,000 batteries a year.

Two batteries with a combined output of 70 kilowatts are used for each “Cristal” vehicle. The range is around 75 miles. The vehicles are charged either at a central depot or at specific stops along the drivers’ route that have access to a power supply. The on-board rapid charging system delivers a half charge in 30 minutes and a full charge in 90 minutes.

Some 20 vehicles will be delivered to the cities of Avignon, Orange, Ajaccio and are scheduled to take to the roads there for the first time before the end of the year. Lohr is also in close contact with representatives of German municipalities regarding the possible use of the “Cristal”.

Ford werkt aan 'extra snelle' laadkabel
    Lars Krijgsman 1 uur geleden

Volta Trucks Reveals Final Design of Full Electric Volta Zero

Leading full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer Volta Trucks has revealed the final production-ready design of the Volta Zero, the world’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle, specifically created for inner-city logistics. The unveiling of the Volta Zero’s final design, created by partner, Astheimer Design in Warwick, UK, bears a close visual relationship to the original demonstrator vehicle, with its modern and innovative appearance and packaging. The final design also confirms that the revolutionary cab and premium working environment for drivers, with its low, central seating position to improve visibility and safety, will be maintained through to production. These same design principles will also be maintained into the forthcoming 7.5t, 12t, and 18t variants – the latter now being repositioned from its previous 19t gross weight.

Whilst bearing a close relationship to the original demonstrator vehicle, all body panels have been redesigned and updated for the final design. The most notable, but still minor, visual changes include the removal of the horizontal frontal light bar, and the replacement of the diagonal interface between the cab and the cargo box with a vertical line, to improve vehicle construction efficiency. Internally, only the colour and material palette have changed, with the blond leather of the demonstrator being replaced with a more practical charcoal colour, and the teak wooden flooring superseded by a more hard-wearing rubber matting.

Production of the first 25 Design Verification prototype vehicles is due to start shortly. These prototypes will embark on a comprehensive and rigorous testing regime, starting in early 2022. This will initially be undertaken by Volta Trucks engineers, and followed by customers, to ensure that the first production-specification vehicles, due to start manufacturing by the end of next year, deliver the highest possible quality levels.

    Mattijn Nederend 18 uur geleden
