    GW

    p.s. S&P-futs 12 punten lager dan vrijdagslot.

NEWSMAKER-Son of a brewer opens government tap for ING
By Reed Stevenson and Catherine Hornby

AMSTERDAM, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Michel Tilmant could have enjoyed a beer on the sidelines of the global financial turmoil had he decided to stay in the family business instead of becoming the Chief Executive of Dutch financial group ING .

The son of a beer brewer, Tilmant is at the helm of the latest European bank to opt for a government funding boost, as the Dutch state said on Sunday it would inject 10 billion euros ($13.5 billion) into the Netherlands' biggest listed bank. [ID:nLJ78025]

"It's a pretty amazing situation. Its unbelievable I would see this during my career," said the 56-year old Belgian, who became chief executive of ING in 2004.

The move came after the company said on Friday it expected its first quarterly loss ever, hit by financial market turmoil and falling asset prices, sending its shares to a 13-year low.

Tilmant has been known as a marketing-savvy executive, but has also overseen deep restructurings at ING to bring profitability back to its far-flung empire of loosely connected businesses.

With slicked-backed hair, a ubiquitous handkerchief poking out of his suit pocket and frequent chuckles during public speeches and events, Tilmant often comes across as the prototypical well-dressed and relaxed European banker.

"Today, our company is stronger, our franchise is reinforced," Tilmant said at a news conference on Sunday.

"Our clients see their trust in our company well placed, our shareholders have the best possible deal given the circumstances, and I think the Dutch state has a fabulous investment."

Tilmant was among the first of Europe's executives to seek more handsome pay for top level management. But at an annual salary of 4.8 million euros in cash and stock, he remains at the lower end of U.S. executive pay scales.

He now faces an even tougher pay deal, as ING's executive bonuses for 2008 will be scrapped as part of the agreement.

Tilmant joined ING in 1997 when it bought the Belgian bank he was heading, Banque Bruxelles Lambert.

He then rose through the ranks as someone who could restructure businesses and bring different brands together.

Initially responsible for ING in Belgium, he subsequently took control of ING's Corporate and Investment Banking Division.

He is a business administration graduate from Louvain university and began his banking career in 1977 when he joined Morgan Guaranty Trust and worked in New York, Paris, London and Brussels for the bank.
