Microsoft's UI ambitions not limited to tables: a new windshield HUD patent
    By Todd Haselton | Published: August 27, 2007 - 10:31PM CT

Microsoft has filed for a patent that could potentially make driving a lot more like piloting a MechWarrior BattleMech. Imagine a windshield that displays what CD track you are listening to, the map, the weather, and perhaps where the nearest available parking space is.

United States Patent Application 20070194902 from Microsoft is titled an "adaptive heads-up user interface for automobiles." The patent app says that the heads-up display (HUD) could be used for a variety of tasks, or "elements," like displaying navigational information, information about a driver's health, speed of the car, and media such as iPods or CDs.

The patent also suggests that controls for a climate control system, communication system, and a general input device could also be integrated into the windshield UI environment. Each of these elements could be displayed in a "hidden state, collapsed state, preview state, and full-view state;" similar to the way windows are displayed on a Vista taskbar.

While it may seem like the display would be a distraction to the driver, the patent's aim is to improve the driver's awareness of his or her surroundings by alerting the driver to information about road conditions or accidents up ahead. It is suggested that this would be a convenience, not a danger, by allowing drivers to prepare for what's ahead without having to look down from the windshield to a dashboard. Further, the heads-up display could give information about the driver such as heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature, and could purportedly detect "road rage" or an over-tired driver. There's no word on how the car or HUD would react to such conditions: would it alert the driver to wake up by blaring loud sirens, or play calming jazz tracks as a form of anger management? Maybe queue up Dr. Phil?

This isn't the first time Microsoft has worked with automobiles or unusual interactive displays. In fact, there's already a Microsoft Windows Automotive platform that works to provide navigation, communication, entertainment, and information support to drivers. One such solution that will be released this fall called "Ford Sync" will allow users the ability to access and interact with media devices like iPods and cellphones with voice commands. In fact, SMS texting can even be done through voice commands with Ford Sync.

The patent is just the last sign that Microsoft is aggresively researching alternative user interfaces for everyday applications. Earlier this year Microsoft unveiled Windows Surface, a multi-touchscreen "table-like" computer.

Will we ever see this in use? Microsoft has had success finding partners for it automotive efforts, so it's a distinct possibility. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out to be like the navigation systems that are integrated into new autos these. We're definitely not fans of needing to agree to a mini-EULA each time we start the car and want to use the system (aka, "Press OK if you agree not to stare at this while driving").

    my source:

"He is in communication with the company fairly often. Because of his position he must maintain his anonymity. As I indicated, in most cases he will only confirm information. As an example, I mentioned to him several months ago that MOT would be the first partner, and his answer was I would not be surprised. Like everything else in life, reading between the lines is where most of the pertinent information lies".
