LogicaCMG secures deal to solve EU Data Retention compliance challenges for Gamma Telecom
    03 December 2007
Pharos solution from LogicaCMG reduces cost of EU Directive compliance while relieving management burden

Demonstrating ongoing leadership in providing innovative solutions, LogicaCMG, one of Europe’s leading IT and business services companies, today announces that Gamma Telecom will implement Pharos – LogicaCMG’s purpose-built data retention and retrieval solution – to ensure compliance with the EU Data Retention Directive requirement that came into force in the UK on 1 October 2007. The Directive, which supports law enforcement and anti-terrorism initiatives, requires Telecommunications and Internet Service Providers operating within EU member countries to collect, retain, retrieve and disclose communication traffic records for up to two years.

Pharos will enable Gamma Telecom to effectively capture and store large volumes of data, such as call and internet records, at a rate of up to a quarter of a billion records per day in a compact, tape-free system that will fit ‘under a desk’. The Pharos intuitive search interface allows Gamma Telecom to search up to 100 billion records, returning the results of a query within seconds. Data can be rapidly retrieved and securely disclosed, as defined in the EU Directive. Pharos will scale up to five billion records/day and up to one trillion total records in total, allowing plenty of room for growth.

Pharos contains extensive MIS reporting capabilities, which will enable Gamma Telecom to manage its business reporting, revenue assurance, network performance analysis and front desk queries. It will also allow direct access to core data more widely within the business and will be faster, more robust and simpler to maintain. As a result, it will allow Gamma Telecom to maximise the value of its corporate data and improve business performance. Based on open standards, the LogicaCMG solution can be deployed in a matter of weeks, with minimal impact to existing operational systems. It will help operators like Gamma Telecom to meet tight deployment deadlines without diverting IT staff from revenue-generating business projects.

Tim Dulley, Head of Revenue Assurance and Fraud at Gamma Telecom, said: "We needed a solution that would not only help us to comply with the EU Data Retention Directive but also provide us with the ability to streamline access to our data and improve the value of our reporting, data consistency and security across multiple platforms. LogicaCMG has provided us with a valuable solution that will meet all of our immediate requirements while providing us the flexibility to extend these requirements in the future. Pharos will make administration easier. We can combine data from LogicaCMG’s application with the existing data stored throughout the organisation to gain a complete view of our company performance.”

Linda Rowlands, Solution Architect, at LogicaCMG in the UK, added: “We want to correct the misconception that operators will have to make significant changes to their processes, operations and current technologies if they are to meet the EU Data Retention and Privacy Directives. Pharos has been designed as an end-to-end ‘plug-and-comply’ software solution that addresses all the issues around the retention of communications data. It is an innovative, yet practical solution for organisations which need to store and rapidly access vast numbers of voice and data records at speeds and price points that have been previously unobtainable. Crucially, Pharos does all this without compromising the integrity of the data and, on a more practical level, with a minimal datacentre footprint.”

The future of outsourcing is just around the corner
    Wednesday, 05 December 2007

LogicaCMG have been continuing their research relationship with the London School of Economics and in particular Professor Leslie Willcocks. Willcocks is well known to all of us in the outsourcing business as he is a prolific author, with something like 25 books on sourcing strategy to his name and he still holds down a day job as professor of technology work and globalisation at the LSE.

‘Building Core Retained Capabilities’ is the title of the new research paper published this week. It investigates one of the key longer-term issues of outsourcing, what happens to your own company and the retained skills if you always buy in expertise from outside?

Willcocks believes that senior managers must identify and retain key skills and core competencies in their in-house teams if they are to truly benefit from the relationship with their outsourcing supplier. The research shows that organisations are currently prioritising short term cost reductions over an “invest to save” strategy, resulting in a number of outsourcing projects developing problems such as loss of control, inadequate service, and constant renegotiation due to a lack of strong internal leadership and project management.

As organisations outsource more and more to achieve strategic advantage [by 2012 about 58 per cent of the average corporation’s IT budget will be with outsourcing suppliers], it is crucial that they resource properly internally. The research identifies nine core capabilities that must be equally applied to ensure long-term business performance and strategic advantage from IT and business outsourcing. These capabilities include leadership, business systems thinking, relationship building, architectural planning and design and informed buying, which lean towards softer business skills.

It’s worth listening to voices such as this. When the benefits of outsourcing are only ever considered over the life of a business plan it ignores the longer-term effects on the organisation, but as Willcocks demonstrates with his research, the future can arrive a lot sooner than you expect if you don’t plan for it.

BROKERWATCH Andritz, LogicaCMG among top picks in JP Morgan small/midcap review
    AFXU

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - JP Morgan has added Andritz AG, LogicaCMG PLC and Premier Foods PLC to its top picks in a review of the small/mid-cap sector.

In a note today, the broker -- reiterating 'underweight' on the sector overall -- started Andritz, LogicaCMG and Premier Foods as 'overweight' with price targets of 55 eur, 185 pence and 250 pence respectively.

The broker said the sell-off in Pan-European Equities which has taken place since July has been particularly harsh on small/midcaps, ending their winning streak and delivering an average negative return of close to 13.2 pct.

Consequently, valuations have been reined-in, said the broker, which lists its top picks, all with 'overweight ratings', as Aker Kvaerner and ERG in the oil sector, Allianz among insurers, Bank of Cyprus, Bank of Piraeus, Erste Bank, Garanti and Unicredit for banks, BMW and Fiat in autos and parts, Carphone Warehouse, CosmOTE, Telenet and United Internet in telecoms and Carrefour and William Morrison among food retailers.

In aerospace and defence, EADS is its top pick, with E.ON and Veolia leading utilities, Givaudan heading food and cosmetics and Imperial Tobacco top pick in the tobacco sector.

Nestle leads for food, TUI Travel heads hotels and leisure, Vedanta is the preferred choice among miners, while Vinci leads in building and construction.

The broker said it views each stock as having high conviction 'now' recommendations into 2008, with its sector long trades on an average forward price/earnings ratio for 2008 of 13.9x.

JP Morgan added that the stocks have an average 2008 estimated earnings per share growth rate of 23.7 pct, with their price targets seeing average upside potential of 37.6 pct, it said.
