    Lenovo ‘Well Positioned’ to Become Global PC Player, Analyst Says

    Morrisville, N.C. — Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, praises PC maker Lenovo on several points in a new report.

    In particular, Gottheil likes Lenovo’s bid to win consumers on a worldwide basis. He also believes Lenovo’s recent decision to partner with IBM on production of servers will produce dividends.

    “At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Lenovo introduced its first line of consumer notebook PCs designed specifically to be sold outside of Asia, and these have been well-received thus far,” Gottheil wrote. “However, TBR believes the PCs were introduced at relatively high prices. We expect Lenovo to adjust prices and subsequently enjoy success with its consumer products going forward.

    “The company then partnered with IBM to manufacture and sell lower-end x86 servers, allowing Lenovo to fill out its business offerings and sell higher-margin products,” he added.

    The report was written before Lenovo launched its ultralight X300 laptop, which weighs in at around 3 pounds. The X300 is a competitor for Apple’s recently introduced “Air.” Both machines are similar in size (around 1-inch thick) and weight but differ in features and price.

    In terms of internal business, Gottheil believes Lenovo has successfully absorbed the IBM PC division, which it acquired two years ago. Lenovo, which maintains its headquarters in Morrisville, N.C., is the world’s fourth ranked PC maker behind HP, Dell and Acer.

    Report: 'Successful Integration'

    The following segment of the TBR report is reprinted with permission:

    Lenovo’s improving performance throughout 2007 demonstrates a successful integration of the IBM Personal Computer Division that the company acquired in 2005.

    TBR believes Lenovo is well-positioned for the next stages in its transformation into a global PC vendor: entering the global consumer PC market and the global small business server market.

    Following the IBM PCD acquisition in May 2005, Lenovo experienced six quarters of uneven growth and profitability, particularly outside its original geographic market of China. Effectively, Lenovo’s strong preexisting business in China supported the unprofitable business acquired from IBM. Then, beginning in 1Q07 and extending throughout 2007, the company grew revenue in every one of its geographic segments, and was profitable in all markets except Asia Pacific outside China, where Lenovo is strategically investing to drive rapid growth. In every quarter of 2007, the company’s operating margin increased sequentially.

    Moreover, year-to-year revenue growth for Lenovo exceeded 9% throughout 2007, with the three most recent quarters posting growth of more than 13%.

    TBR believes this performance shows that Lenovo has accomplished the tasks necessary for the acquisition to be successful. It has transitioned the IBM customer base to the Lenovo product and brand while driving down costs so that the acquired business is profitable.

    Lenovo has also organized itself as a global company, not only in market but also in management and infrastructure. Lenovo believes the task of streamlining the supply chain is not yet complete, that the process can and will be made more efficient. 2007’s performance shows that Lenovo is now functioning effectively after incorporating a business three times its size.

    The company is now ready to expand into the global consumer market and the global small business server market. TBR believes the consumer market expansion is critical to Lenovo’s long-term viability as a major PC vendor. To compete effectively against the much larger HP and Dell PC businesses, Lenovo needs the scale and rapid growth the consumer market provides.

    Lenovo has two advantages in this initiative:

    1) the company has unique expertise in consumer sales in the rapidly growing emerging markets; and

    2) the company has the opportunity to define itself and its brand to the market.

    Its disadvantages are its smaller size and relatively limited resources, and the fact that its brand is not well-known in the global consumer market. TBR believes Lenovo will gain global consumer market share in 2008, and will establish itself as a viable PC vendor in that market.

    March 11 (Bloomberg) -- Lenovo Group Ltd., China's biggest personal-computer maker, is ``interested'' in buying companies overseas to expand share outside its main domestic market.

    ``If there is a good opportunity and it offers good returns to shareholders, we will definitely consider it,'' Chairman Yang Yuanqing told reporters in Beijing, where he is attending the annual meeting of the Chinese legislature.

    Lenovo, which gets more than half of sales from Asia, is seeking acquisitions after Acer Inc. last year foiled its plans to buy Netherlands-based Packard Bell BV to increase its footprint in Europe. Raleigh, North Carolina-based Lenovo bought International Business Machines Corp.'s PC business in 2005, a purchase that propelled the company to be among the world's top five computer makers.

    Yang said Lenovo, which sells computers to companies in Japan, plans to enter the consumer market there, without giving a timeframe. Any acquisition by Lenovo won't be in Japan, he said.

    Lenovo has increased its distribution networks in India and eastern Europe and sold more notebooks in China, expanding in emerging markets to narrow the gap with Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. Lenovo in January said it will sell its handset unit for $100 million after shipments slumped 31 percent, while PCs climbed 22 percent.

    The slowing U.S. economy will hurt demand for personal computers, Yang said.

    ``However, it will hurt us less than our competitors as our main markets are outside the U.S.,'' he said. ``Domestic demand is still strong.''

    New Delhi, March 13: The world's fourth largest computer maker Lenovo Group on Thursday said it plans to become the top PC maker in the India by next three years.

    "India is an important market to us ... besides launching new products, we will also enhance our retail presence and after sales service to become the no. 1 PC maker in the country," Lenovo Senior Vice President and President (Consumer Business Group) Liu Jun said.

    The company would focus on overseas investment in emerging Markets like India, Brazil, Mexico, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, he added.

    The PC maker on Thursday launched a consumer PC brand -- Idea, which includes notebooks called IdeaPad and desktops called IdeaCentre.

    "Lenovo has a significant focus on the consumer segment in India," Lenovo India Executive Director (Transaction Business) Anil Philip said, adding that the company would continue to focus on the Indian market.

    "We have more than 100 exclusive stores in the country and plan to open more stores to increase our retail presence and reach the consumers," he said.

    The new range of notebooks include--- IdeaPad Y710, IdeaPad Y510 and IdeaPad U110 and the desktop range include IdeaCentre K 200 and IdeaCentre Q200. The IdeaPad range starts from Rs 42,000 and the IdeaCentre from Rs 23,050.

    The launch of Lenovo's Idea brand in India follows its global launch in January this year, part of multi-pronged strategy to grow faster and more profitably than the industry average.

    The company plans to roll out its marketing campaign called "Idea Everywhere", featuring its brand ambassadors Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan in April this year.

    Ik ben toch dankbaar dat ik de mijne (gekocht op 29 nov. 2007) verkocht op 7 januari dit jaar met verlies van $34.03 (commissie en 'n paar centen).

    Nu zou ik ze veel goedkoper terug kunnen kopen, maar wacht nog maar "even", geen haast, met de hele wereld in elkaar kelderend.

    Lenovo expects 2008 PC sales to exceed industry average

    Mar. 18, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Leading Chinese PC marker, Lenovo Group Ltd<992><LNVGY> expects its PC sales to exceed industry average this year, a top executive of the company said on Monday.

    Company CFO Huang Weiming made the remarks after a special shareholdings meeting, saying that Lenovo is closely monitoring the impact of economic slowdown in the U.S. and currently its PC sales there still perform well.

    Last week, Yang Yuanqing, president of Lenovo said the pressure brought by the U.S. recession is not obvious as its major markets like China, Europe grow drastically.

    Elsewhere, its independent shareholders have approved a plan to sell its mobile phone division to a private fund management group led by Hony Capital for US$100 million.

    The PC giant invested a total of 160 million HK dollars to call back 33.15 million shares from March 7 to 14.

    The price of Lenovo has been on the decline since IBM announced to sell 116 million shares at 5.3-5.41 HK dollars per share on February 29, amid the market slide Lenovo Chairman Yang Yuanqing earlier said that the company would continue to buy back shares if there is enough cash, on the ground that current price doesn't reflect the company' s value and prospect.     Voor de aardigheid schreef ik toch al "Laatste 6 maanden", verder bedoel ik er niks mee, want wat telt, is wat er in de toekomst gebeurt, niet in het verleden.

    Three Minutes with Lenovo's Leader:

    The chairman of Lenovo Group, Yang Yuanqing, wants to challenge perceptions of Chinese companies as mainly producers of cheap, low-end products.

    To do this, Lenovo is pushing high-end models, like the ultra-thin X300 and feature-packed IdeaPad, in international markets to showcase its technological prowess. As a result, Lenovo has yet to roll out a range of low-end products outside China.

    For now, this strategy means Lenovo is missing out on the low-end segment of the international PC market, where higher shipment volumes can offset lower system prices. But Yang isn't worried, promising that once Lenovo establishes itself as a provider of high-end and mid-range computers it will expand into low-end product segments.

    Yang recently sat down with IDG News Service to discuss the company's continuing efforts to grow its business outside China. The following is an edited transcript of that interview.

    IDG News Service: The X300 and IdeaPad are high-end products. Does Lenovo have plans to target the low end of the PC market outside China?

    Yang Yuanqing: I think the X300 is a pretty innovative product. It proves we have the spirit of innovation. This is how we want to position ourselves. We don't want the public to see Lenovo as a company that provides cheap, low-end products. We want people to identify Lenovo as an innovative company.

    IDGNS: By focusing on the high-end and mid-range markets, are you missing the opportunity to ship higher volumes of low-end systems?

    Yang: We want Lenovo to be a company that can provide a full range of products, from top to bottom. But we should have different strategies in different markets. Outside of China, because our market share is still very low, we need to choose the right product segment to start. In China, where our market share is very high, we can cover a wide range of segments, from top to bottom.

    IDGNS: How long will it take to expand the product line outside China, and push into those low-end product segments?

    Yang: Until we have seen the success of the first step. We should start with mainstream and premium products, after we succeed in those areas we can consider other segments.

    IDGNS: Will that happen quickly?

    Yang: I hope so.

    IDGNS: There's an increasing amount of talk about low-cost laptops, fueled by the success of Asustek Computer's Eee PC. Will Lenovo work with Intel to roll out a low-cost laptop based on the upcoming Atom processor, either in China or elsewhere?

    Yang: As a first step, we should cooperate in China. After we see success in China, and outside China we have seen success in the high-end and mainstream segments, then we should consider the low-end products outside China.

    Even if we can succeed in low-end products outside China, that's not really going to bring long-term success. People will see Lenovo as a low-end company. This concern is especially important for a brand from China. We must change the preconception some people have that China can only produce low-cost products. That's difficult, but we have to change those assumptions.

    IDGNS: IDC now puts Acer ahead of Lenovo in terms of global PC market share. How important is it for Lenovo to take back that No. 3 spot?

    Yang: The ranking is just the natural result of how a company performs, so you shouldn't set that kind of target. I ask my team to focus on our core competencies and to grow faster than the industry's average growth. If you can always grow faster than average growth, then absolutely you will gain market share. That means step by step your ranking will be raised.

    I have never set a ranking target for our team. We have to focus more on building our core competencies first, rather than just faster growth. That's more important, that's sustainable growth.

    IDGNS: Lenovo came close to acquiring Packard-Bell, but that deal fell through. Is Lenovo looking for other acquisitions?

    Yang: Acquisitions are an opportunity for us to grow. Also, we have a lot of experience with this kind of growth. That's become another one of our core competencies, to integrate new businesses and different cultures. Absolutely, we should leverage that advantage to give our shareholders a better return, but it has to be a good opportunity. If there's an opportunity there, we would take it.

    IDGNS: Do you see any good acquisition opportunities right now?

    Yang: No.

    Inmiddels heeft Lenovo sinds 7 maart tot 7 april al 80,2 miljoen aandelen teruggekocht tussen een prijs van HK$4,55 en HK$5,31. Lenovo heeft een maximum gesteld van 6 miljoen aandelen die per dag ingekocht kunnen worden. Aandeleninkoop zal naar verwachting doorgaan, aangezien de financieel directeur van Lenovo aan heeft gegeven dat er een aankoopprogramma van in totaal HK$ 4 miljard op tafel ligt.
