Buy Rating Affirmed for Microsoft Amid Strong Growth and Strategic Investments

Analyst Kash Rangan of Goldman Sachs reiterated a Buy rating on Microsoft (MSFT – Research Report), retaining the price target of $515.00.

Kash Rangan has given his Buy rating due to a combination of factors surrounding Microsoft’s financial performance and strategic investments. Despite a slight underperformance in Azure’s growth and higher capital expenditures than anticipated, Rangan sees the company’s overall revenue growth and the consistent increase in free cash flow as positive indicators of Microsoft’s financial health. The 30% growth in Azure, though slightly below expectations, still reflects a strong trajectory, particularly considering its contribution at scale. Rangan also highlights Microsoft’s ability to maintain a robust cloud book of business, as evidenced by the Cloud Remaining Performance Obligations (RPO) growth, which instills confidence in the company’s revenue prospects.

Furthermore, Rangan perceives the increased capital expenditures not as a short-term concern but as a sign of Microsoft’s confidence in its future growth, suggesting that the company is investing to address current capacity constraints. While acknowledging the macroeconomic pressures and the competitive software industry landscape, he anticipates these to be transient issues. Rangan places greater emphasis on Microsoft’s significant revenue scale, the strategic growth in Azure, and the strong free cash flow performance. These factors, combined with a potential moderation in capital expenditures in the coming years, underline his positive outlook and support the Buy rating with a target price of $515.

Rangan covers the Technology sector, focusing on stocks such as Microsoft, Datadog, and Salesforce. According to TipRanks, Rangan has an average return of 8.7% and a 57.27% success rate on recommended stocks.

'On Tuesday, AMD raised its forecasts for its new AI graphics chip, the MI300, for the second half of the year, and said that chip, plus its Epyc chip for servers, were fueling its biggest data-center growth ever. AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su raised her forecast to $4.5 billion for revenue this year from the company’s MI300 graphics accelerator chips used in AI data centers. That was up from over $4 billion previously, and AMD’s shares jumped 7% in after-hours trading.

Meanwhile, software giant Microsoft had a slight miss in revenue in its Azure cloud-services business, with revenue growth coming in a tad light at 30%, and a forecast for another slight deceleration to 28%-29% growth in the next quarter. Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood cited some slowing in Europe on non-AI data-center usage and capacity constraints on Azure, as the company spends to further build it out.'

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - The Biden administration plans to unveil a new rule next month that will expand U.S. powers to stop exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment from some foreign countries to Chinese chipmakers, two sources familiar with the rule said.
But shipments from allies that export key chipmaking equipment - including Japan, the Netherlands and South Korea - will be excluded, limiting the impact of the rule, said the sources who were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified.
