Intel’s problems worse than you think, WSJ columnist says

Intel’s (INTC) problems are worse than you think, according to Wall Street Journal technology columnist Christopher Mims. The company is losing market share “in multiple areas that are critical to its profitability,” and its “many competitors” include not just Nvidia (NVDA) but smaller rivals and even previous allies like Microsoft (MSFT), Mims contends. Last quarter, Intel’s “perennial also-ran” AMD (AMD) actually eclipsed its revenue for chips that go into data centers, the columnist points out. In 2022, Intel’s data-center revenue was three times that of AMD, the Journal notes. Mins contends AMD and others are making “huge inroads” into Intel’s business of making general-purpose chips.

Intel Confirms Panther Lake, First Processor Manufactured with 18A Node, to Launch in 2H25

Samenvattend betekent dit dat de 18A node transistors zijn met een afmeting van 1.8 manometer , dus Intel gaat een nieuwe generatie van chips produceren met kleinere, snellere en energie-efficiëntere transistors.

Ik heb nog wat extra informatie gevonden Intel's Xeon 6900 series , designed for high-performance computing (HPC) , artificial intelligence (AI) , and demanding data center workloads , offers significant upgrades in both core count and processing power compared to its predecessors .
These chips are based on Intel's "Sapphire Rapids" microarchitecture and are built on the Intel 7 process node .
They provide impressive performance improvements , scalability , and energy efficiency , making them ideal for mission-critical enterprise applications .

Max-performance servers powered by the Xeon 6900 series are now shipping , providing organizations with a robust platform for workloads such as:

    - High-performance computing (HPC): Complex simulations , AI model training , scientific research.
    - Data centers and cloud infrastructure : Scalable , efficient systems to handle large-scale processing and storage needs .
    - AI/ML workloads: Faster training times and optimized performance for machine learning models and data analytics .

These servers come with significant architectural improvements , including support for DDR5 memory , PCIe 5.0, and CXL (Compute Express Link) , enhancing both memory bandwidth and system interconnects for better performance and scalability .

Key features of Xeon 6900-powered servers:

Up to 60 cores per processor for massive parallel computing .
Support for Intel’s AVX-512 and AI acceleration to enhance specialized workloads .
Intel Deep Learning Boost (DL Boost) for AI tasks .
Enhanced memory and I/O performance with faster interconnects and more memory bandwidth .
With these servers now shipping , enterprises can expect to leverage these processors for critical , data-intensive applications that demand cutting-edge performance and reliability .
