Architects embrace " the beginning of the Timber age "

    9 November 2015 ,
Wood is taking over from steel and concrete as the architectural wonder material of the 21st century, with architects praising its sustainability, quality and speed of construction. (+ slideshow).

New types of engineered timber that are considerably stronger and more stable than regular wood are allowing architects to build bigger and higher, with timber skyscrapers now a real prospect.

"This is the beginning of the timber age," said UK architect Andrew Waugh, whose firm Waugh Thistleton is behind a housing development in London that will use more timber than any other project in the world.
According to Waugh, building in wood is "super fast, super accurate, and also makes the most amazingly beautiful spaces." He said: "These are buildings that feel very good to be in, very robust and very solid."

The product making this new breed of "massive timber" structures possible is cross-laminated timber – an engineered wood consisting of laminated timber sections.

Usually referred to as CLT, the material is produced by layering three, five or seven timber sections of wood at right angles, then glueing them together. It can be prefabricated in a factory to any shape or dimension, and is much lighter than its steel and concrete counterparts.
"CLT is the future of construction. Timber is the new concrete," said Alex de Rijke, director of London-based firm dRMM, which has been working with the material for 10 years. Its CLT projects include a wooden house in Hackney, a trio of residential towers in Norway, and a staircase installation that pioneered the use of hardwood CLT.

"CLT has opportunities for significant advantages over steel, concrete or masonry construction in terms of environmental credentials, speed, weight, and structure as finish," said de Rijke.

"The 17th century was the age of stone," he said. "The 18th century was the peak of brick. The 19th century was the era of iron. The 20th century was the century of concrete. The 21st century will be the time for timber."
Several new buildings demonstrate the material's potential, including a Chicago pavilion with an expansive self-supporting roof and the high-rise apartment building that won this year's prestigious Finlandia Prize for Architecture. There are also timber skyscrapers planned for Sweden, Canada and Austria.

"Mass timber buildings are changing the scale of what is possible to be built in wood around the world," said Canadian architect Michael Green, who urged architects and engineers to swap steel and concrete for timber in his 2012 publication The Case For Tall Wood.

Green said that, while there has been no reason to challenge the role of steel and concrete in construction before, climate change now demands that we do.

"For a century and a half, steel and concrete have shaped the skylines of the world,They are wonderful materials that allow big buildings, bridges and roads, but we now also know that they are hugely energy demanding to produce and have significant carbon footprints."

Accoya adds crisp finish to Scottish life-sciences lab

    13 November 2015

A modified wood manufactured by Accsys Technologies has been used in the construction of a £3 million life sciences building in a Scottish technology park.

The new building, designed by Threesixty Architecture, is the first building to be completed at the new Inverness Campus.

Tasked with using timber to clad the Highlands-based building, architects Threesixty opted to use Accoya and cited its durability and BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating as key deciding factors.

The architects ruled out using traditional timber cladding for the building due to associated weathering and maintenance issues. As the building was designed for the life sciences sector it was considered crucial that a “crisp and confident” aesthetic was achieved.

Distributors Russwood, supplied 600m2 of Accoya, which was used to clad the building with consistent colouring and a sharp, clean aesthetic.

Andrew Lilly, architect at Threesixty Architecture said: “The stable nature of Accoya meant that mitred edges were possible, allowing for the building to have crisp, clean, and durable edges. The horizontal opened board Accoya timber was finished in two different colours, grey and warm wood, to allow for contrast and to define the architectural language while providing the warmth and tactile nature associated with natural timber. Accoya was expressed as vertical fins to enclose the escape stair and form the plant and cycle store.

“We were keen to minimise maintenance requirements. Accoya’s unique properties, including excellent dimensional stability, helped achieve this through preventing shrinking and swelling and increasing the life of coatings. Two different colours of vacuum coating were specified and it is anticipated that these will last much longer before needing recoating when compared to traditional timber cladding.”

Accoya used to build a place for remembrance

    Thursday November 5, 2015

Accoya® wood, the leading high performance modified wood manufactured by Accsys Technologies, has been used in the construction of a place of remembrance in the Netherlands

    Accoya wood specified for cladding
and sun blinds in Dutch crematorium

Panoptic architects used uncoated Accoya wood boards to create a minimalist and clean-looking design Accoya® wood, the leading high performance modified wood manufactured by Accsys Technologies, has been used in the construction of a place of remembrance in the Netherlands. Accoya wood was used to construct external cladding and sun blinds for a crematorium in the city of Oosterhout in the southern region of the Netherlands. Rotterdam based architectural firm, Panoptic, were commissioned for the project and the team set out to deliver a minimalist clean looking design, which would be aesthetically pleasing with the aim of making it a welcoming place for people to visit. They were also keen to ensure all building materials were durable and stable, requiring little maintenance so as not to disrupt the atmosphere of the crematorium. Accoya was the perfect solution and the Panoptic team worked with Dutch construction company, De Groot Vroomshoop to install Accoya cladding and sunblinds. The sunblinds were constructed at a 45 degree angle, to provide privacy and uncoated Accoya wood boards were used reflecting the requirement for a natural and minimalist design. Commenting on the use of Accoya, architect Ebami Tom from Panoptic said: “As we are environmentally conscious using an eco-friendly product was essential in this project, which led us to choose Accoya. Compared to other wood products, Accoya really stands out as it’s durable, sustainable and non-toxic, plus its Cradle-to-Cradle gold certification and the 50 year guarantee against rot and decay gave us extra reassurance. “To achieve the right look and feel we used a two layer coating called Woodstain Equal Weathering which forms a transparent grey coat over Accoya over time and creates a strong visual effect. We are pleased with the finished project, it’s just what we set out to achieve.” Laura Ladd, director of marketing at Accsys Technologies said: “The cladding and outdoor sun blinds at the Dutch crematorium have been beautifully designed resulting in a relaxing, natural feeling environment. Accoya is consistently specified for several high-quality construction projects throughout the Netherlands. This is partly because Accoya boasts exceptionally high levels of durability and stability yet retains the aesthetic attributes of other hardwoods

This is the most sustainable office in the world

How environmentally friendly is your office? No matter how great you are at recycling, your workspace is probably nowhere near the Geelen Counterflow head office in the Netherlands, which has just been awarded a 99.94 percent ranking by the industry-standard BREEAM certification scheme. That's the highest rating for an office building ever, making it the most sustainable in the world.

ACCOYA® CHOSEN FOR THE FIRST EVER TWO-STOREY KFC COMPANY STORE

Accoya has been chosen as the ideal cladding material for this KFC project. Located on the Bury New Road in Prestwich, this project marks a significant milestone as the first dual-levelled KFC Company store ever built.

Distributed by Mon Timber, this striking development includes large areas of external elevations and soffits cladded in Accoya wood. Plus, Accoya was also used for the Brise Soleil canopy detailing on the drive-through lane as well as the double height curtain walling pictured on the front elevations.

For this natural aesthetic the pre-finished Accoya profiles were given one (natural plus-ctec) base coat and three top (sansin translucent) coats. As one of the most durable products on the market, Accoya wood is the ideal material for projects such as this.  Accoya is 75% less likely to shrink and swell in variable weather conditions, allowing it to retain its structural integrity compared to its competitors.

27E building in amsterdam renovated by bureau SLA
    21 April 2016,

amsterdam’s marine base, located in the heart of the dutch city, started a gradual transition early last year from a dominantly military-only zone to a more public program. one building, ’27E’ was selected as the first to be repurposed solely for civilian use. a former education facility, it was dismantled and stripped to its frame by local architecture studio bureau SLA under direction from the central government real estate agency.

’27E’ is situated just off the water, in the vicinity of the maritime museum and the nemo science center; the latter a project of renzo piano. originally constructed in 1962, it is one part of a two structure ensemble connected by a single story base. bureau SLA’s efforts include a re-organization of layout, introduction of various services and infrastructure, and a new façade. due to changes, each level has 500m2 of net floor space

the façade consists of large 3.5 x 3.5 meter triple glazed windows set within deep bays. more noticeable, are wooden elements on the main face. made of accoya wood, a closer look will reveal interpretations of the flags of every country in the european union. since completion in january 2016, it has been leased by makerversity, a company that provides space, tools, and cutting-edge facilities for makers, creatives, and member businesses
