    Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc.'s chief executive said Tuesday that the company expects to feel short-term impact from cutting ties to a specialty pharmacy, but added its business remains solid and it has learned lessons through its recent ordeal.
    Valeant "hasn't always taken the time to listen to what the broader world is saying," said Chief Executive J. Michael Pearson. "We're going to fix that."
    He said Valeant is on "strong financial footing," but "obviously what has happened will impact" its fourth-quarter results.
    The remarks, made on an investor call Tuesday, referred to a controversy that has engulfed the Canadian drug company in recent weeks, namely questions about its use of a specialty mail-order pharmacy to distribute some of its drugs. Valeant's relationship with the company, Philidor RX Services LLC, was responsible for 6.8% of Valeant's revenue in the third quarter but the sales channel helped drive fast growth for Valeant.
    A short seller wagering against Valeant stock last month questioned whether Philidor, which until recently Valeant didn't publicly discuss, was being used to generate phantom sales. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Valeant employees working at Philidor used fictitious names like "Peter Parker" in their emails.
    Valeant has defended its accounting and said it hasn't found evidence of illegality but created a board committee to look at its relationship with Philidor and broke ties with the pharmacy.
    Mr. Pearson on Tuesday said Valeant is working to quantify the impact of ending its relationship with Philidor. The company said it plans to update its outlook at an investor day in December. Philidor, he said, is committed to ending its operations by Jan. 31, 2016.
    Valeant expects to have a plan for replacing Philidor within 90 days, Mr. Pearson said, and relationships with one or more specialty pharmacies will be part of that plan. But they will be handled differently from Philidor, he said. Valeant had an option to buy Philidor, and the two companies were close enough that Valeant consolidated Philidor's financial results with its own. Any new relationships will be "just contractual," Mr. Pearson said.
    Mr. Pearson said the recent allegations about Valeant and its relationship with Philidor have been "a painful experience for me personally."
    Philidor wasn't immediately reached for comment on Valeant's remarks. Philidor has previously said it "has adhered not only to all applicable laws but to the highest standards of ethical business practice."
