    Check dams built in Kerala with steel sheet piles cutting cost and project

    New Indian Express reported that using steel sheet piles in constructing check dams is gaining acceptance in India with Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation projects at Mannannoor near Ottappalam in the Bharathapuzha being completed, third one in South India after one in Andhra Pradesh and another one in Tamil Nadu. A smaller one at Vengara in Malappuram district which is 80m long is also nearing completion

    Originally, a concrete check dam with an outlay of INR17 crore had been proposed. But now a check dam has been built using steel sheet piles for INR5.6 crore, which is just a third of the project’s outlay.

    Mr R Jayapalan CEO of KIIDC said that “The water is now spread across 5.5 km in Mannannoor and the check dam is filled to the brim. The water table has increased in the nearby wells in the villages.”

    He added Moreover, check dams can be built only when the water-level recedes during the summer. This check am was completed within six months.”

    According to Mr Jayapalan, the design was by IDRB (Irrigation Design Research Board) and it had been sent to IIT, Chennai for final clearance.

    Harif, the contractor of the check dam says,“ The steel sheet pile checkdam in Mannannoor connects Vazhalipadam in Thrissur panchayat to Mannannoor in Vaniamkulam panchayat. It is 245 m long and four metres wide.

    A total of 330 tonne of steel sheets was brought in from Arcelor Mittal

    EU hints at new sanctions on China over steel dumping

    Reuters reported that the European Commission said that China’s failure to curb its steel output could prompt the European Union to consider new trade sanctions against Beijing. In an EU document aimed at framing the bloc’s China policy over the next five years, the Commission said Beijing’s pledge to cut up to 150 million tonnes of crude steel production by 2020 was insufficient and the country had to do more.

    The document, which was agreed by top EU officials including EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Wednesday, said “The EU is seriously concerned about industrial over-capacity in a number of industrial sectors in China, notably steel production. If the problem is not properly remedied, trade defence measures may proliferate, spreading beyond steel to other sectors such as aluminium, ceramics and wood-based products.”

    It said “Subsidies and other government support measures that contribute to expanding or exporting steel capacity, or to maintaining structurally loss-making operations, should be eliminated as soon as possible. China needs to reform its state-led economy and let market forces naturally address the problem.”

    The policy document follows a pledge by the Group of Seven leading industrialised nations in May to take steps after global steel production hit a record high earlier this year.

    The European Commission now has seven ongoing investigations into Chinese steel imports after opening a new case into alleged subsidies for hot-rolled flat steel in May.

    Mijn zege heb je Voda...goed weekend. Ik druk het scherm uit en ga eens verder met m'n leven (weekend vieren). Toch een aantal ritjes gemaakt en een paar losse centen gepakt. Dat is de schrale pleister op de diepe wond.
