    Queensland will boost measures to combat mosquito breeds responsible for the spread of Zika virus and Dengue fever.

    Minister for Health and Ambulance Service Cameron Dick announced the measures following a specially convened roundtable of public health and infectious disease experts last week..
    “Expert advice is that Zika virus is not currently circulating in Queensland,” Mr Dick said.
    “We want to keep it that way.”
    Mr Dick said the roundtable had agreed to two immediate measures to help boost Queensland’s response.
    The State Government will spend $400,000 to increase the capacity of its laboratories – including one in Townsville – to rapidly test for Zika virus in humans.
    This will be the first time that testing for the Zika virus in humans will occur in Townsville.
    Queensland Health will also spend $1 million to develop a new campaign to educate people on the vital role they can play in reducing the spread of mosquitoes. The campaign would target both Dengue and Zika virus.
    In addition, Queensland Health has advised of an immediate food recall of pre-packed lettuce products (including baby spinach, baby rocket, cos and kale) grown and distributed by the Victorian-based company Tripod Farmers.
    The recall comes after an increased number of Salmonella anatum cases in Victoria.
    At this stage, we have been advised that the recalled product was not distributed to Coles and Woolworths supermarkets in Queensland.
    However, the products are distributed to some trade outlets in Queensland and a number of businesses are affected.
    Queensland Health is liaising with companies who may have incorporated the recalled product into other foods sold to the public.

    Is India Geared to Face The Zika Virus?

    If you think Zika virus does not pose a threat to India, you may be wrong. Did you know that India has had a history of Zika virus attacks as early as in the 1950s? An expert team of National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune had published a paper in 1953, after testing the exposure of Indians to 15 insect-borne diseases, one of which was by the Zika virus.

    Now that the virus is continuously evolving and WHO declaring it as an international public health emergency, India needs to be particularly conscious about the spread of the disease. The mosquito that carries the virus actually thrives in the country.

    The worrying fact is that the Zika virus, which is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, has already infected as many as four million people in the Americas. The Pan American Health Organization says Zika has spread in 24 nations and territories in the Americas.

    Although, the virus has no vaccine or cure yet, there are few tips you can follow to be safe from the deadly virus. Click on further slides for your guidelines…

    The symptoms of the virus include a mild fever, skin rash (often on the face), muscle and joint pain, redness and irritation of the eye (similar to ‘pink eye’) and a rundown feeling. Therefore, you can’t really diagnose Zika virus infection by symptoms alone as the symptoms are very similar to many flu-like illnesses.

    While blood tests do exist, but currently people are not routinely tested for Zika virus. So, to avoid the virus, you can do a few things from your end. For instance, if you are traveling to countries with mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus, you will need to avoid mosquito bites in a similar fashion as you would here to be safe from malaria or Dengue.

    This means minimizing the amount of skin exposure, staying in air-conditioned areas that are free of mosquitoes, sleeping under bed nets and using proper insect repellent.

    In India, people need to be more careful about not letting clean water accumulate at any place in their house or surroundings. Remember to clean out empty flowerpots and not to over water potted plants. It is advised to not have any stagnant water around as it acts as breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

    Turn over empty pails and buckets, so that they do not collect excess water. If the container that contains water cannot be emptied, remember to cover it well when not in use.

    The president will submit a request to Congress on Monday

    President Obama is asking Congress to provide $1.8 billion in emergency funding to fight the Zika virus, the mosquito-borne illness that could be causing the proliferation of a rare birth defect in some Latin American countries.

    The president will submit a formal request to Congress on Monday requesting money to up increase mosquito control programs, help build response and support capacities in states and territories where transmission is possible, expand research into the link between the virus and birth defects, and help countries currently facing the virus keep it from spreading.

    “There is much we do not yet know about Zika and its relationship to the poor health outcomes that are being reported in Zika-affected areas,” a White House Fact Sheet reads. “We must work aggressively to investigate these outbreaks, and mitigate, to the best extent possible, the spread of the virus.”

    Brazil has been hardest hit by the virus, which has been detected in 26 countries and territories in the Americas. World health officials believe it could spread to three or four million people this year, including in the United States.

    The request also includes an additional $250 million in federal assistance in Puerto Rico for women and children who are at risk for or have been diagnosed with microcephaly, the birth disorder linked to the virus. A public health emergency has been declared in the U.S. territory because of the virus.

    Democrats in Congress pushed the president to formulate a proper response plan for the virus and called for additional resources and an interagency response to fighting the virus. The White House has been insistent that the administration is responding aggressively to the virus, which has not yet been transmitted via mosquito in the U.S. The virus has already been transmitted on U.S. soil via sexual contact.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been actively working to keep the public informed about the virus. Officials are now advising pregnant women and their male partners to use condoms or abstain from sex if either have traveled to or live in Zika infected areas.

    In Nederland wordt jaarlijks ongeveer 1 op de 100.000 mensen getroffen door GBS. De griepprik leidt bij één op de miljoen gevaccineerden tot het syndroom van Guillain-Barré.

    Wat is de oorzaak van GBS? Guillain-Barré syndroom

    GBS treedt op door een onbedoelde reactie van het eigen immuunsysteem. Ongeveer 70% van de mensen met GBS hebben in de weken voorafgaand aan het krachtverlies een gewone infectie zoals een verkoudheid, keelontsteking of diarree gehad. Het eigen afweermechanisme valt dan niet alleen de ziekmakende bacteriën of virussen aan, maar ook de zenuwen.

    Ze brengen alles in stelling om de farmacie weer flink te laten verdienen met paniekverhalen. Ik ken wel 15 mensen die Zika hebben gehad, ergste geval had ook ontstoken ogen, mar die had ook een zwakke weerstand. In Siriname schat ik dat de helft van de mensen het wel heeft gehad. En het is meestal zo mild dat niemand er voor naar de dokter gaat.

    Ik zou me pas zorgen maken als is angetoond dat grote aantallen babies hersenafwijkingen kunnen krijgen.

Denk aan Softenon en er was in Nederland toch ook wat in de jaren 70, wat ook nog wordt doorgegeven aan de generatie daarop. En recent door de vaccinatie tegen Mexicaanse griep werden veel meer kinderen geboren met slaapziekte. Ik zou eerst maar eens afwachten of de zwangere vrouwen in andere landen dan Brazilie ook last krijgen.

    Of de hersenafwijking door Zika wordt doorgegeven of juist door de verplichte kinkhoest vaccin in Brazilie weten we niet. Maar uitsluiten kunnen we het niet. Daarom wat meer informatie wat de oorzaak kan zijn over de vele gevallen in Brazilie:

    Nu zou dit virus plotseling verantwoordelijk zijn voor de levensbedreigende hersenafwijking microcefalie. Het centrale zenuwstelsel is bij deze ziekte afwijkend en de schedelomvang is te klein. Normaal worden er in Brazilië ongeveer 150 kinderen geboren met deze ziekte. Vanaf oktober 2015 tot nu zijn er rond de 4000 baby’s geboren met een te klein hoofdje.


    Het virus is aangetroffen in de hersenen van een baby die is overleden als gevolg van microcefalie. Omdat een aantal van de moeders in het begin van hun zwangerschap hebben geklaagd over virusachtige symptomen, zijn deze vrouwen onderzocht en een deel van deze vrouwen is besmet met het virus.

    Maar is het dan terecht dat de conclusie wordt getrokken dat het virus verantwoordelijk is voor het doen krimpen van de hersenen en schedel van een ongeboren kind als het lang niet bij alle moeders en kinderen is aangetroffen? Of zouden er andere oorzaken kunnen zijn?

    Vanaf begin 2015 worden zwangere vrouwen in Brazilië verplicht om zich te laten vaccineren tegen kinkhoest. Daarvoor wordt een nieuw vaccin gebruikt dat ook zou moeten beschermen tegen difterie en tetanus.

    Er is wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat aantoont dat deze combinatie van vaccins juist deze afwijking kan veroorzaken (Atypical vanishing white matter disease with microcephaly and hepatosplenomegaly provoked after diphtheria pertussis tetanus vaccination)

    Wellicht is het een combinatie van de twee factoren. Als het immuunsysteem van de vrouwen zo bezig is met de Zika-infectie, dan zal het zich niet goed kunnen verdedigen tegen de aanval op het immuunsysteem door het vaccin.

    Maar in plaats van te onderzoeken of het vaccin de oorzaak van deze ziekte is, richten wetenschappers zich liever op het ontwikkelen van een nieuw vaccin. Wetenschappers van het Erasmus MC staan te popelen om te gaan helpen.

    Nu worden er tonnen aan giftige bestrijdingsmiddelen rond gespoten, daar waar een onmiddellijke stop op de verplichte vaccinatie wellicht een veel snellere oplossing is voor deze golf aan ernstige geboorteafwijkingen.

    CDC Moves to Highest Alert Level for Zika Virus

    ATLANTA, Ga. (ABC News) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Emergency Operations Center has been moved to Level 1, the agency's highest level, due to the risk of Zika virus transmission in the U.S., officials said Monday.

    The Level 1 activation is "reflecting the agency’s assessment of the need for an accelerated preparedness to bring together experts to focus intently and work efficiently in anticipation of local Zika virus transmission by mosquitoes," the agency said in a statement.

    The highest level activation means the CDC staff will work around the clock to combat a critical emergency. The three other Level 1 activations have been to combat Ebola, to combat H1N1 influenza in 2009, and after Hurricane Katrina.

    The Zika virus has been spreading throughout the Americas and the World Health Organization has deemed it a "global health threat."

    That's led to new questions on whether the U.S. Olympic athletes should travel to Brazil, home to one of the biggest outbreaks of the Zika virus and the 2016 summer games.

    "It's very difficult to give advice to people who've devoted the last x number of years training for that. The CDC and NIH could just give them the facts and the evidence based information," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

    The U.S. Olympic Committee is advising athletes to listen to the CDC, while Olympic officials in Rio are trying to downplay the threat.

    Fauci said members of the U.S. women's soccer team, who've won three consecutive Olympic gold medals, are "taking all necessary precautions in regard to the Zika virus."

    For 33-year-old U.S. sprinter Dee Dee Trotter there's no question at all.

    "I don't care what kind of viruses and stuff come out. We're going to finish this one out," Trotter said.

    The Obama administration will ask Congress for $1.8 billion to respond to the Zika virus abroad and prepare for it at home, officials said Monday.

    "We must work aggressively to investigate these outbreaks, and mitigate, to the best extent possible, the spread of the virus," the administration said in a statement. It said it has not yet seen a case of Zika transmitted directly within the continental United States, but with the approach of spring and summer mosquito seasons, it wants to be prepared to fight the disease.
