In the meantime, the Saab-story makes for great PR for a dealer group nobody had heard of. Honestly, had you ever heard of Pangda, or “Pang Da,” as the Spyker press release insists on calling them? Chinese companies have long learned that the cheapest way to get endless coverage the world over is to say that they are interested in buying a western carmaker.

    Remember Tengzhong? See, you do.

Debate: For Saab to be reborn, the company must first die

    Updated 2011-05-17 12:23
Saab owners lack a long-term plan for the company to survive. The constant trips to China have not increased Victor Muller's credibility. Now would be the best of Saab that it went bankrupt - and then be renewed with a new owner, writes Tony Fang, University of Stockholm.
Saab Automobile continue to bleed. Production in Trollhattan is stopped after a month and a half. Any news from China about how Saab's owner Victor Muller tries to fish for Chinese investors seem to welcome in Sweden. The latest one, Pang Da, is just a distributor. To survive Saab needs a very strong car manufacturers in China as an owner, which is strongly supported by the Chinese government.

Many seem to think that every time Victor Muller managed to conjure up new Chinese cash, amplified Saab's ability to survive.

I have a very different picture of Saab's future. Saab's crisis is essentially not about lack of money but rather the failure of owners and wrong leadership. Money can always find the right person at the right place at the right time, which Geely-Volvo deal has shown. To make matters worse, Saab has unfortunately caught in a vicious circle: the more money Muller can find, the more crises, Saab will suffer in the future.

There are certainly reasons to question how the leadership in Victor Muller has worked:

º How could Victor Muller just days before the collapse Saab to boast that he "has followed the business plan"?

º How could Victor Muller of great bonus and double pay while Saab is actually held on to bleed heavily?

º How could Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab's former president and CEO, the same day he announced his resignation, saying that "the business plan is solid," and he "is convinced that Saab Automobile is on the right path" when it actually was about to collapse?

º How could Saab's communications director repeatedly denied that Saab has had problems paying the subcontractors, when the problem not only exists but also is acute?

Research shows that three things are essential to a car brand to survive and prosper in today's global business environment:

º right owners / managers with a genuine passion for and expertise in industrial mass production,

º good financial muscle in the long term, and

º a long term vision regarding China and India to secure a promising market in the world's most populous emerging markets.

I meet Victor Muller and his good friend Vladimir Antonov hardly these criteria. Both can be good entrepreneurs, but their long-term strategic plans to invest in Saab doubt.

To let the Dutch businessman Victor Muller take over Saab is probably one of the biggest mistakes in modern Swedish industrial history. Victor Muller has no money, no experience of mass production, nor is he trusted in emerging markets like China. Chinese companies flirted with Saab perhaps because they were out to make money by buying and selling company with complex financial transactions. So you can not save the Saab. The company is in need of a long-term, stable marriage, not a short affair.

Victor Muller's latest lightning-fast negotiations in China since the end of April is celebrated by many who want to see an end to Saab's misery. But you do not read business administration to challenge Victor Muller's leadership and bargaining power in negotiations with the Chinese people - when the whole system is turned off in Trollhättan. That he played the Chinese car manufacturers against each other seems to have gone too far even from the Chinese business culture point of view.

Had Victor Muller did have a long term vision for China, he would have visited the NDRC - China's top industrial decision-making authority - and he should have done long ago. The hurried trip to China to find a medication to quickly cure the headache with a manipulative bargaining tactics against potential Chinese partners, shows a weak leadership. This has already generated a lot of distrust of China, which has damaged both Saab and Sweden's reputation.

While many fear that Saab will go bankrupt and that the 3500 job thus disappear from Sweden, I think it would be wise to calm down and realize that it is probably better to let Saab go bankrupt. Since the company can be renewed with fresh blood, which is better than letting Saab live on during the current ownership structure with large debts and uncertainty about the future.

In order to even survive Saab needs a new and strong owner, preferably a single such with great vision and ambition that can bring Saab into a bright future in a globalized world. The owners are expected to come from emerging markets like China and India. Such a scenario does not mean that jobs will disappear from Sweden.

China, for example, supplies constant surprises, as Geely's takeover of Volvo Car Corporation has shown.

Strong sales in April for Saab in the United Kingdom

    Comments Comments

Saab’s UK sales continues to accelerate in an industry that is down by 8.5%
    Year-to-date sales now up 77.7 per cent v 2010
Saab confirmed as UK’s fastest-growing premium brand

Saab sales continue to build strong momentum, with the number of cars sold in April more than double the volume sold for the same month last year. This impressive uplift reinforces Saab’s position as the fast-growing premium car brand in the UK market.

Sales last month totalled 489 units, a 101 per cent increase compared to the same month last year. For the first four months of the year, total sales are now 77.7 per cent ahead of 2010, showing an even greater gain than the 73.5 per cent rise posted for the first quarter.

Saab sales have now increased in each of the last nine months compared to the previous year and total year-to-date sales of 2,866 units has enabled to Saab to raise its share of the UK premium car segment.

A major driving force behind the brand’s sales success is the Saab 9-3 model range with 1.9-litre twin-turbo diesel manual engines delivering ultra-low CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km. In terms of CO2 per unit of horsepower, the 180 hp variants offer a level of efficiency that is class-leading. Like the rest of the Saab line-up, these models are now backed by the launch of a highly competitive range of retail and business finance options and rising residual values.

The new 9-5 Saloon is also contributing as it provides an attractive, alternative choice for customers in the larger, mid-size premium segment. It too is benefiting from Saab’s new finance offers, particularly in the corporate business sector.

An enhanced MY12 9-3 range enters showrooms this month offering more efficient petrol engines with direct injection, variable valve timing and twin-scroll turbo charging. Saab is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the launch of its iconic Convertible model this month, and later this year, the product portfolio will be expanded by the launch of the much-awaited Saab 9-5 Sport Wagon and the mid-size 9-4X crossover, taking the brand into a new market segment.

“With new products coming on stream backed by competitive finance packages, and a strong and loyal dealer network in place, we are in great shape to continue the growth of Saab in the UK,” says Saab Great Britain Managing Director Charles Toosey.

Strong sales in April for Saab in the United Kingdom

    Saab Negotiations under way
    Updated 2011-05-18 14:58

The negotiations with the firms for the Saab in Trollhättan has begun, but it is unclear whether any agreements already signed.

It is not enough to agree with some suppliers, Saab must have submitted all the parts to build cars.

"Some pieces may be able to be retrofitted, but most of it must be included from the start of production,"said Svenåke Berglie, president of the subcontractors' trade association FKG.

"I know negotiations are ongoing, but I do not know how far you have come, "said Eric Geer, spokeswoman for Saab.

Some money has flowed in to Saab's accounts in recent days.

"Pang Das payment of EUR 30 million came on Tuesday,"said Geers. Before that we had 30 million through Gemini.

"Then another 15 million from Pang Da within 30 days when they get next billeverans."

In the expenditure for Saab tax payments.
    "They are made??,"said Geers.

    Criticism waiting Muller at Meeting
    Trollhättan / Zeewolde / TT

Saab's chairman Victor Muller and father around the world to save the Saab. Now he is going home to Holland to be questioned at Saab Spyker's AGM. At least by some. [Updated 16:32]

At Saab, Spyker's shareholders' meeting in Zeewolde in the Netherlands on Thursday will get Muller's criticism of Dutch shares will save the association VEB. Muller may be the first time a cash bonus of 4.5 million, while Saab has severe problems. The bonus is disproportionate, consider the VEB.

    - We will try to convince him to surrender, "said David Tomic, an economist at Dutch shares will save the association VEB, said.

Muller defended at a press conference in Nacka in early April, their choice to receive the bonus with certain goals in the business plan is reached and that management did a good job even if the company made a loss.

It does not impress David Tomic.

    - The bonus is disproportionate. Given the large financial losses and poor sales, we wonder what objectives have been achieved that may justify a bonus, "said Tomic.

Spyker Cars has not previously had monetary bonuses, according to David Tomic.

    - This is a new element of Muller's career.

According to the financial statements for 2010, Muller addition to the bonus including 120 000 shares, which in today's share price is worth more than 4 million, on top of their normal pay.

Spyker Cars has throughout its history from the 2004 stock market was a risky investment and the company was near bankruptcy several times. After the purchase of Saab Automobile in February last year, both losses as debts gone up several sizes. The auditors continue to warn of the company's survival. They did so even in the financial statements for 2010.

The net loss last year was 218 million, about two billion.

Muller has over the years have saved his company by finding new sponsors and new loans. Something that continues to Saab.

VEB notes that the latest agreement with Chinese Pang Da appears to have given Saab breathing space, but there is still much uncertainty about the future.

    - At this time last year was the message from management that the company would turn a profit 2012th It is not realistic now, "said Tomic.

    - We want to know how business plan looks like now in production, marketing and economics. The question is whether the subcontractors to do business with Saab anymore after everything that happened, "said Tomic.

VEB do not think it is good that Muller also takes over the CEO position, which is formalized at the meeting when Jonsson depart.

    - The company needs a CEO who reports to the Board. Muller already behaving as if he runs his own company and do not care so much about the shareholders, "said David Tomic.

The planned sale of the Spyker sports car division to the British company CPP Global Holdings, controlled by Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov, is also full of question marks. In late February signed a letter of intent in which the purchase price was set at a total of 32 million, but still is not the deal closed.

Akitespararna also thinking about why Jonsson stepped down as CEO of Saab. Family reasons, said Jonsson, but VEB will raise the issue anyway.

    - It can not be a coincidence that it's been such a ruljangs on managers. The last three years there have been four such treasurers, "said Tomic of Spyker.

    - We want to know if there was any conflict with Muller that made Jonsson chose to resign at such a critical situation here, "he continues.

The future is as uncertain as usual

Prior to the employees in Trollhättan, he suddenly saw worn out.

Four weeks of bustle of Hong Kong, New York, Sweden, Washington, back to Beijing and then straight to the factory in Trollhattan would kill anyone. And it's not about a holiday trip but to try to get money so that Saab can survive. Add all the disappointments when new, perhaps rather optimistic, deals disintegrate.

The Flying Dutchman Victor Muller is entitled to look tired.

He added Savile Row suit to the side, came in day-old stubble and hoodie and apologized for nothing yesterday as he promised.

The future of the Saab is just as uncertain as ever. Or?

My contacts in Trollhättan, said last night that the 270 millions of Chinese Pang Da is on Saab's account. Together with an equal amount from the finance company Gemini with Vladimir Antonov in the wings. That's enough to pay the subcontractors and jump start production.

And yesterday was forced Finance Minister Anders Borg finally emerged from the shadows to say anything about the Saab deal that he really been cleverly let Maud Olofsson take care of.

He said he hopes that it solves for Saab.

If he is serious, I hope he tells Eva Srejber, Vice President of the European Investment Bank.

They became close friends when they worked together for ten years at the National Bank and she got her job at the EIB thanks to Anders Borg. She is the one who has withheld the money promised to Saab.

Now is the time to show their cards.

    LOL!

    quote:

    schreef:

It didn’t believe in miracles, but now I do. So on Monday, a MoU is signed in China. On Wednesday morning, a journalist in Stockholm writes that “My contacts in Trollhättan said last night that the 270 million [Swedish Krona] from Chinese Pang Da are in Saab’s account.” So that would be Tuesday. Amazing. I haven’t seen a wire from China, or from Hong Kong, hit a European account within 24 hours. I must believe that someone in China gave Muller a huge suitcase full of cash. (Which he did properly declare when entering Sweden, I trust.)

I didn’t believe in miracles, but now I do. A Chinese car dealer wires $42 million on the basis of a MoU. It says that “some of the transactions following the MoU are subject to agreement on definitive transaction documents and certain conditions, which include consents from certain Chinese governmental agencies, the European Investment Bank, GM and the Swedish National Debt Office,” but the money is transferred nonetheless. I want to meet that dealer. I trust he has a long white beard and a halo.

I’m jealous. I have received many MoUs. They tend to elicit a predictable comment: “Not worth the paper they are written on.” In the import business to China “payment against documents” (i.e. cash for the bill of lading when the merchandise leaves port) are considered the best terms one can get. Usually, they want the stuff to arrive in Chinese port and clear customs before they pay – reluctantly. Suddenly, all of this has changed.

Please let this be true. Don’t ruin my new-found belief that there is a God.

And to all the detractors: If someone pulls off that kind of a miracle, then he deserves a bonus.
