    Shekel-dollar rate rises at opening
Easy Forex: The Bank of Israel will be able to cut the interest rate if inflationary pressures ease.
    Yael Gruntman 18 Feb 08 09:35
The shekel-dollar and the shekel-euro exchange rates both rose in morning trading today.
On Friday, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was unchanged in January, adding that inflation over the last twelve months had reached 3.5%, far beyond the price stability ceiling. Market sources believe, however, that the Bank of Israel will still cut the interest rate by 25 basis points to 4% at the end of this month.

Worldwide, the dollar fell to $1.464/€ over last week, the sharpest drop since the beginning of the year, as dealers continued to be discouraged by the weak macroeconomic data coming out of the US.

The shekel-dollar rate rose 0.25% to NIS 3.60/$ this morning, while the shekel-euro rate rose 0.48% to NIS 5.2853/€.

Online foreign currency brokerage Easy Forex notes that the shekel-dollar rate is holding steady at around NIS 3.6000/$, and the unchanged CPI in January was in line with the analysts' forecasts. It adds that should the inflationary pressures felt in the final quarter of 2007 continue to ease in February and March, Governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer will be able to lower the interest rate.

Fischer clarifies comments as shekel-dollar rate falls
After a period of shekel weakness, the currency changed course.
    Efrat Perez-Harpaz 14 Apr 08 15:20
The Bank of Israel this afternoon clarified comments by Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer which he made yesterday. The central bank explained that Fischer's comments, in which he mentioned that the shekel would continue to gain strength, did not refer to upcoming days but referred instead to the medium to long term.
The shekel-dollar and shekel-euro exchange rates fell sharply today, both before and after the representative rates were set. The shekel-dollar representative rate was set today at NIS 3.565/$, a drop of nearly 1% from yesterday's exchange rate, and the shekel-euro representative rate was set at NIS 5.6482/€, a fall of 0.8% from the previous representative rate.

Later in the afternoon, the exchange rates continued falling. The shekel-dollar rate had plummeted a further 1.2% to reach NIS 3.5215/$, and the euro-shekel rate fell by approximately the same proportion, falling 1.3% to NIS 5.5755/€.

The dollar was weaker across global markets today, and in Israel, Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer commented yesterday that the shekel would continue to strengthen in the near and medium terms. This afternoon, the Bank of Israel clarified those comments. The Bank of Israel also continues its program of buying dollars on the foreign exchange market.

Today's foreign currency trade took place against the backdrop of the weekend's G7 meeting where economic leaders professed concern about a continued slide in the dollar's value. However, online foreign currency trading dealer EasyForex did point out that the leaders did not report a concrete plan of action.

Yesterday, the Central Bureau of Statistics released March figures which showed a sharp increase in Israel's trade deficit. The figures pointed to a slowdown in the growth rate of goods exports, specifically in high-tech, as a result of a stronger shekel.
