Lenovo shares drop after IT spending alert
By Robin Kwong in Hong Kong

    Published: January 10 2008 02:00 | Last updated: January 10 2008 02:00

Shares in Lenovo, the Chinese computer maker, yesterday fell by their steepest amount in 14 months after a broker's report warned of falling IT spending in the US amid fears of a recession.

The shares slid 10 per cent after the report from CLSA downgraded the computer maker to "sell", citing possible rising costs and slowing sales growth.

"Slowdown of IT spending is a risk to 2008 outlook. Meanwhile, labour and marketing expenses are trending upwards," Jenny Lai, a CLSA analyst, wrote in the report.

Ms Lai lowered her forecast for Lenovo's 2009 earnings 30 per cent, to $364m.

Similar concerns have hit Lenovo's larger rivals, with shares in Taiwan's Acer and Dell of the US dropping 15 per cent this year.

Lenovo, which ranks fourth in the global personal computer market behind Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Acer, has traditionally focused only on the business market outside China.

However, it has launched a range of desktop and laptop computers globally. In December, Lenovo said it might have to scale back its launch into the European consumer market this year if the slowdown worsened.

Lenovo shares closed at HK$5.88, down 10 per cent. They peaked in November when the company surprised analysts and investors with a sharp increase in quarterly profits and sales - an indication that the company had integrated its 2005 acquisition of IBM's PC unit.

Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo chairman, speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, said the company was more insulated from a US recession than its rivals as it was a relative newcomer to the consumer market.

"Given our [consumer] market share outside China is zero, I don't think it [the risk of a US recession] will have a significant impact on our expansion plan," Mr Yang told Reuters.

Charles Guo, an analyst at JPMorgan, echoed Mr Yang's view, adding that Lenovo should continue to be supported by a growing domestic market. Internationally, Mr Guo believes companies will continue to spend on IT as long as corporate earnings remain strong.

While labour costs are rising, Mr Guo said they were a small portion Lenovo's costs. A far greater part of costs was buying processors from chipmakers.

HK-listed Lenovo rated 'buy' on recent share price weakness

CSC Securities (HK) said it is maintaining its "positive" view on Lenovo, with recent weakness in the Chinese computer maker's stock presenting a good buying opportunity.

Hong Kong-listed Lenovo's share price has been hit by fears that a US economic slowdown will impact demand for PCs this year, but CSC said the fall in its share price has been overdone.

CSC has a target price of 8.0 hkd on Lenovo. "We believe the share price correction has (been) overdone and offers investors a good entry point to accumulate the stock," CSC said in a note.

CSC added that Lenovo's sales exposure of over 40 pct to the China market will help offset the impact of a US slowdown. Citing research firm IDC, CSC also said PC demand will maintain moderate growth of 10-15 pct this year.

    Nou dit weer

    Howdy,

Lenovo grows share but falls to 4th among computer makersJanuary 17, 2008 10:46 AM ET advertisement

Lenovo lost its position as No. 3 computer manufacturer in the world in the fourth quarter thanks to a rival's acquisition, research firms said Thursday. But the Morrisville company still grew market share and saw year-over-year shipments increase faster than in the overall market.

Research firms IDC and Gartner both said Acer, based in Taiwan, took the No. 3 spot from Lenovo after buying California computer maker Gateway. Gartner put Acer with a 9.5 percent market share in the quarter, while IDC said the figure was 9.6 percent.

Lenovo's market share also grew, however, increasing from 7.1 percent to about 7.5 percent, according to both companies. The firms estimated Lenovo's growth at close to 22 percent, eclipsing the overall market by between 5 and 7 percentage points.

Gartner said Lenovo showed "a relatively good performance" despite its weak sales to consumers. IDC said the company's gains will be hard to replicate thanks to a slower market and better year-prior sales figures, but the company is positioned for growth thanks to strengthening sales outside Asia and the computer's new consumer PC push.

Lenovo, which has thrived by selling PCs to business customers, recently introduced a line of consumer PCs in response to the faster growth in that part of the market. The strategy comes as the company looks to maintain recent gains in market share - advances that led to nearly tripled profits in the company's second fiscal quarter.

    let wel,

SHANGHAI, Jan 21 - Personal computer shipments in Asia excluding Japan rose 21 percent year-on-year to 18.1 million units in last year's fourth quarter, with China's Lenovo <0992.HK> leading the market, preliminary data released on Monday said.

For the full year, shipments for the region rose 20.9 percent year-on-year to 66.6 million units amid significant growth in portable PCs, driven by healthy growth in portable PCs, IDC said.

"Even though wild cards such as the U.S. economy are looming overhead, the fundamentals are so solid that the market could very well beat our conservative expectations for 16.8 percent growth in 2008," analyst Bryan Ma wrote.

For the fourth quarter, Lenovo Group's market share grew to 19.6 percent with unit growth of 25.9 percent year-on-year, market researcher International Data Corp said in a note.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HP) Co. HPQ.N was in second place in the fourth quarter, with a 13.8 percent share of shipments and unit growth of 45.6 percent, IDC said.

Dell (Dell) Inc. DELL.O was in third place with a share of 8.4 percent, while unit shipments rose almost 39 percent.

Taiwan's Acer Inc. <2353.TW> came in fourth with a 6.4 percent share, while unit growth was over 45 percent, followed by China's Founder with a 4.9 percent share and unit growth of 5.2 percent. (Reporting by Sophie Taylor; editing by Kim Coghill)
