MUMBAI: Corus Group, the London-based steel and aluminium major, has identified India as one of the low-cost, high growth market. The company is exploring opportunities to set up a carbon steel manufacturing facility in the iron ore-rich Orissa.

“We are exploring selective opportunities for carbon steel business in low-cost, high growth countries like India and Turkey,” a Corus group sp-okesperson said.

The sp-okesperson, however, did not comment on the specifics of the project. “We do not comment on specific projects as a matter of company policy,” she said.

The spokesperson said the group’s focus will continue to be on carbon steel. Corus Group is probably among the first international steel producer which is looking at India more as a high growth market than a manufacturing hub.

While steel giants like POSCO and Mittal Steel have already announced their plans for India, these companies have come to India with a view to service the surrounding markets with low-cost steel from India.

The surge in infrastructure building activities in India makes the country an ideal destination for a group that is reputed to be among the best in construction grade steel.

The group, which has an annual turnover of over Rs 72,000 crore, has, however, not submitted any firm proposal to the state government.

Officials from the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa (IPICOL) said officials from Corus recently visited Orissa and held preliminary talks with the corporation and the state government.

IPICOL is the nodal industrial promotion agency for Orissa. “The Corus delegation did not submit any firm plans, but were exploring opportunities for setting up an integrated steel plant in the state,” the official said.

He said company officials are likely to hold another round of negotiations with IPICOL. Orissa has the largest iron ore reserves in India estimated to be over 4bn tonne.

The state is being seen as a low-cost steel manufacturing hub because of the availability of iron ore which could be captively mined if the manufacturer sets up an integrated steel manufacturing facility in the state.
