Intel to invest more than $28 billion to build two chip factories in Ohio

"(Reuters) -Intel said on Friday it would invest more than $28 billion to construct two new chip factories in Licking County, Ohio, as the company pushes ahead with plans to expand its foundry business.

The chipmaker's shares, which have slumped more than 55% this year, rose 1.4% in early trading.

The initial phase of the project is expected to create 3,000 Intel jobs, it said."

    Intel Q3:
•Good revenue, expense control and a solid guide.
•Intel beat on revenue by $260M
•Good “Patrick” Adjusted gross margins in the 40s and better than expected EPS expecting 3 cent loss turned to a 15 cents $3.1B write offs in the numbers

Profit and gross margin are a bit more complex.

Intel took $15.9B in impairment charges, $3.1B that show up on non-GAAP EPS line. Without those, the company would have had an non-GAAP EPS of .17/.15, which exceeded the street expectations of a 3 cent loss. Net-net Intel beat of profits the way I look at the world.

Gross margins would be in the 40s, too.

And surprisingly, that’s the way Wall Street is seeing it.

    Highlights:
•5 nodes in 4 years on track 18A turnaround node, while TSMC raising prices. This isn’t all I care about but it’s all I care about.
•$10B cost reduction plan appears to be on-track
•PCs down 7% YoY, AMD likely taking share. 100M AI OCs end of ‘25.
•Datacenter and AI +9% (Thanks Xeon) Launched Gaudi 3
    •NEX +4% (surprising)
    •Foundry down 8% (small number, 18A hasn't kicked in)
•Altera down 44% (larger than I would have thought, but that market is rough)

TSMC to receive ASML's next-gen chip machines this year
Intel is already testing latest EUV equipment as chip race heats up

    Ivm betaalmuur, hier het verhaal:

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is set to receive its first shipment of the world's most advanced chipmaking machines from Dutch supplier ASML by the end of this year, just months behind U.S. rival Intel.

Known as high numerical aperture extreme ultraviolet -- or high NA EUV -- lithography machines, they are the world's most expensive chipmaking equipment, with a price tag of about $350 million each, equivalent to the cost of about three F-35 fighter jets.

TSMC, Intel and Samsung of South Korea are the only global chipmakers still in the race to produce ever tinier and more powerful semiconductors, and they all rely heavily on ASML's tools.

Sources briefed on the matter told Nikkei Asia that TSMC will install the new high NA EUV equipment at its R&D center near its headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in this quarter.

Extensive research and engineering work will be required before the new equipment can be deployed for mass chip production, but sources say the company does not feel the need to rush it into action.

"Based on current R&D results, there's no pressing need to use the latest version of high NA EUV machines, but TSMC won't rule out any chance to do comprehensive pathfinding and engineering work and conduct trial runs with the most advanced tools available in industry," one of the sources said. "TSMC aims to keep all options open."

TSMC will likely consider using the machines for commercial production only after it introduces so-called angstrom 10 (A10) production technology, potentially after 2030, sources said.

A10 technology is roughly two generations beyond the 2-nanometer chips that TSMC aims to put into production by the end of 2025. Currently, its most advanced semiconductors are 3-nm processor chips used in the iPhone 16 series.

Nanometer measurements generally refer to how closely transistors can be packed together on a chip, with a smaller number generally indicating a more powerful product.

TSMC confirmed to Nikkei Asia that it is bringing in the new machines but did not disclose any details about the timing of delivery or introduction in production.

"TSMC carefully evaluates technology innovations such as new transistor structures and new tools and considers their maturity, cost, and benefit to customers before deploying them to volume production," the company said. "TSMC plans to bring in high NA EUV scanners first for R&D to develop the associated infrastructure and patterning solution needed for customers to fuel innovation."

Intel, meanwhile, installed its first set of high NA EUV machines at its R&D center in Oregon a few months ago and is testing them in preparation for commercial production. A second set of ASML's EUV machines was shipped to Intel in the second quarter of this year. Intel is looking to accelerate its production technology development to regain its manufacturing leadership, and aims to put the new machines into commercial production by 2027. It outsourced some flagship CPU chip production for this year and next to TSMC in order to focus on its own technologies.

ASML is the only company in the world that provides machines for EUV lithography, the most advanced method for printing semiconductor structures onto wafers. Its standard EUV machines are used to make chips at the 7-nm level or better and cost about $180 million per set.

The high NA EUV machines are capable of printing even tinier structures onto wafers, allowing them to pack nearly three times as many transistors into the same area as ASML's standard EUV machines, according to the company.

Samsung and TSMC were early adopters of EUV technology, introducing it in 2018 and 2019, respectively. TSMC currently relies heavily on ASML's standard EUV machines to make its most advanced chips for smartphones, servers and AI applications. The chipmaker has previously said it owned more than half of the world's EUV machines as of the end of 2023.

Intel was slower to shift to EUV, relying instead on older lithography tools. This decision led to lower production yields for certain CPUs and delays in Intel's roadmap for introducing new products. It was only after current CEO Pat Gelsinger reversed this decision and committed to EUV that the company introduced its first CPU utilizing the technology in 2023.

An Intel executive told Nikkei Asia that EUV has significantly improved production quality and reduced cycle times, or the amount of time required to process a wafer from start to finish.

ASML told Nikkei Asia its first two sets of high NA EUV machines were shipped to Intel and confirmed that a third set was "in the process of being shipped to a second major customer at this moment," without disclosing any specific information about that customer.

ASML said it has commitments from all of its EUV customers to adopt the new technology but added that their time frames for doing so may vary. "That has been the case with every technology transition."
