    Positieve ontwikkelingen voor holdings als Sofina (ik ben sinds vanmiddag ook daar belegd):

    Baichuan AI, one of China's four so-called artificial intelligence (AI) tigers, raised about 5 billion yuan (US$687.6 million) in a new funding round that valued the start-up at more than 20 billion yuan, the company said on Thursday.

    The Beijing-based firm's latest round was backed by some of the biggest names in Chinese technology, including Alibaba Group Holding, Tencent Holdings and Xiaomi, along with some state-backed funds. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.

    China International Capital Corporation, the AI industrial investment fund backed by the municipal governments of Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Shenzhen Capital Group, one of the largest yuan-denominated venture funds set up by the southern tech hub's government in 1999, are among the participants.

    Founded in April 2023 by Wang Xiaochuan - founder and former CEO of Sogou, once China's second-largest search engine operator after Baidu - Baichuan has seen its valuation swell past US$2.7 billion in a matter of months, becoming China's second-most valuable AI start-up behind crosstown rival Moonshot AI, valued at US$3 billion and also backed by Alibaba.

    China's biggest e-commerce and cloud services operator has emerged as one of the most prolific backers of Chinese AI start-ups, with stakes in all four AI tigers, which also includes Beijing-based Zhipu AI and Shanghai-based MiniMax.

    'Chinese technology giants Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings have rushed to offer the latest artificial intelligence (AI) model from Facebook owner Meta Platforms into their cloud services, as the debut of Llama 3.1 drew widespread attention this week.

    Alibaba Cloud, the e-commerce giant's online computing platform, was among the first to include the latest open-source Llama family of large language models (LLMs) - the technology underpinning generative AI products such as ChatGPT - by integrating it into its Bailian model training platform, the company said on Tuesday in a post published to its official WeChat account. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.

    Alibaba said it is offering one month of free compute resources that can be used for training and inferencing tasks with Llama 3.1, which launched on Monday.

    Shenzhen-based video gaming giant Tencent quickly followed with its own announcement the same day, saying Llama 3.1 is now available on its cloud platform. It includes a number of fine-tuning and inferencing tweaks to ensure Meta's open source models are usable in a range of areas, from intelligent conversation, text generation and writing tasks, according to the company.'

    'China's publication authority approved a batch of 105 video game licences for July, which includes titles from industry leaders Tencent Holdings and miHoYo.

    Arena Breakout: Infinite, a first-person shooter PC game by Tencent, was among the new batch approved by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) to launch in the mainland market, according to a list released on the regulator's website on Monday.

    MiHoYo, the Shanghai-based developer of the hit mobile game Genshin Impact, received approval to launch Xingbu Gudi, meaning roughly "star valley" in English, on both mobile and PC. The company has yet to release details about the game.

    Beijing has recently been maintaining an approval rate for new games at about 100 per month. It approved 104 titles last month, 96 in May and 95 in April.

    The NPPA has licensed a total of 733 domestic titles in the first seven months of the year, compared with 609 in the same period last year.

    The faster pace of approvals reflects a gradual recovery of China's video gaming industry, which saw first-quarter revenue rise 7.6 per cent year on year to 72.6 billion yuan (US$10 billion), according to data by market intelligence company CNG. Revenue dipped 0.3 per cent in April.

    DnF Mobile's "explosive" debut contributed to a 12 per cent rise in Tencent's mobile gaming revenue in May, according to Sensor Tower.

    The market has been recovering since April 2022, when Beijing resumed licensing video games after an eight-month freeze. In January this year, the NPPA retracted a draft proposal it published in December that aimed to put a cap on user spending in games and ban "excessive" rewards. That proposal wiped out at least US$80 billion in value of Chinese video gaming stocks in Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York.

    A key Chinese government official later stepped down, the South China Morning Post reported in January.'

    Zoektocht naar nieuwe CFO gestart

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Prosus ziet CFO Basil Sgourdos per 30 november met pensioen gaan en is gestart met de zoektocht naar zijn opvolger. Dit maakte de investeerder met een notering aan het Damrak donderdag bekend.

    Sgourdos was 29 jaar in dienst bij Prosus. In juli 2014 werd hij CFO van Naspers en in 2019 van Prosus.

    De zoektocht naar een geschikte opvolger is inmiddels gestart. Of die binnen of buiten het bedrijf wordt gezocht, meldde Prosus niet.

    Here’s how Tencent did in the June quarter against LSEG consensus estimates:

    Revenue: 161.12 billion Chinese yuan ($22.5 billion) versus 160.77 billion yuan expected.
    Profit attributable to equity holders of the company: 47.63 billion Chinese yuan versus 39.95 billion yuan expected.
    Revenue was up 8% year-on-year while profit rose 82%.

    After suffering its first ever annual revenue decline in 2022, Tencent has been looking to reaccelerate growth in its core gaming business.

    Investors have rewarded the company so far, with shares up around 28% this year as of Tuesday. That’s in part thanks to the excitement around a new game called Dungeon & Fighter Mobile (DnF Mobile) which is produced by South Korean firm Nexon and distributed in China by Tencent.

    DnF Mobile has been dominating the top grossing game charts in China, and investors are hoping Tencent could reap the benefits of its popularity for years to come, as it did with Honor of Kings.

    Tencent said its China games business brought in revenue of 34.6 billion yuan in the second quarter, a 9% year-on-year rise. That was faster than the 3% growth seen in the first quarter of the year. Tencent attributed the performance to increased sales from Valorant and the “successful launch” of DnF Mobile.

    “DnF Mobile, a newly released game, reactivated millions of IP (intellectual property) fans and is retaining players well, positioning it to become our next evergreen major hit,” Tencent said in its earnings release.

    International games revenue also rose 9% versus the year ago period to 13.9 billion yuan.

    Geholpen door groeiversnelling in de belangrijkste gamingdivisie.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Tencent heeft in het tweede kwartaal van 2024 de verwachtingen overtroffen. Dit bleek woensdag uit de cijfers van het Chinese techbedrijf, waarin het in Amsterdam genoteerde Prosus een groot belang heeft.

    De omzet over de periode steeg met 8,0 procent tot 161,12 miljard yuan. De online advertentieverkoop steeg met 19 procent, dankzij hogere inkomsten uit video-accounts en korte video's.

    De binnenlandse gameverkoop van Tencent keerde terug naar groei en steeg met 9 procent ten opzichte van een jaar eerder na het robuuste debuut van "Dungeon & Fighter Mobile" en hogere inkomsten uit "Valorant".

    Het videogame- en socialemediabedrijf meldde woensdag verder dat de nettowinst met 82 procent was gestegen ten opzichte van een jaar eerder naar 47,63 miljard yuan, wat overeenkomt met 6,0 miljard euro. Het resultaat was hoger dan de 41,47 miljard yuan die werd verwacht door analisten geraadpleegd door FactSet.

    De brutowinstmarge van het in Shenzhen gevestigde bedrijf groeide van 47 procent een jaar eerder naar 53 procent, gedreven door inkomstenstromen met hoge marges, zoals binnenlandse games en advertenties voor video-accounts.

    Het aandeel daalde in Hong Kong met 1,3 procent, maar heeft dit jaar al bijna 30 procent aan waarde kunnen bijschrijven.

    Het aandeel Prosus reageerde woensdag nauwelijks en daalde fractioneel.
