    CAF Starts Testing FCH2RAIL Hydrogen Train with Renfe

    CAF has started dynamic track testing of the hydrogen-powered demonstrator train being developed for the FCH2RAIL project. This demonstrator train is based on one of Renfe's commuter trains, in which a new power generation system has been installed. This system, which utilises a hybridization of energy from hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, has been integrated into the vehicle's existing traction system. As a result, it will become one of the first bi-mode demonstrator trains with hydrogen fuel cells. In other words, a zero-emissions vehicle concept that will be able to run in electric mode on the electrified infrastructure, while the hybrid mode will be used for operating on catenary-free sections.

    After successfully performing static testing, the train is ready to start dynamic testing on an external track. With the start of these tests, the consortium will meet the original deadlines set for this phase of testing, demonstrating the consortium’s full commitment to the project.

    During the dynamic tests, the hybridization of the fuel cells and the batteries will be optimized on routes that have been specifically selected as being representative of those that would be used for commercial services, meaning that the new system will be fully tested by a wide range of different power demand conditions. As a result of these tests, the competitiveness of the new bi-mode hybrid propulsion solution can be evaluated against the diesel trains currently in use on many routes, within the framework of current plans to decarbonize rail transport.

    FCH2RAIL is a consortium of the following companies: CAF, DLR, Toyota, Renfe, ADIF, CNH2, IP and Stemmann-Technik. The project has a EUR 14 million budget, EUR 10 million of which is being funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, formerly FCH2 JU, a European Commission agency dedicated to promoting the development of hydrogen and fuel cells.

    NanoSUN Launch Hydrogen Cooling Technology

    NanoSUN has launched its new hydrogen cooling technology to deliver a reliable, low-cost, cooling solution for operators of hydrogen transport vehicles and static hydrogen refuelling stations. NanoSUN's new Coolth Engine technology differs from conventional mechanical refrigeration methods, in that it offers operators an eco-friendly solution that is always ready to go; requiring zero downtime. This enables the delivery of consecutive vehicle refuelling operations, whilst eliminating large power usage to reduce energy costs and limit the impact of global warming.

    NanoSUN’s novel Coolth Engine technology eliminates the need for moving parts & the operating costs of conventional chillers. Presenting a low-cost, low-maintenance option that facilitates fast hydrogen refuels for the end user.

    In 2021, NanoSUN were awarded 170k of funding by the Department of Transport in partnership with Innovate UK, to design and develop an alternative cooling process for rapid refuelling of hydrogen road freight vehicles. NanoSUN‘s Research & Development team have since devised a cost-effective and appropriate cooling solution to support the delivery of an efficient and reliable refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles.

    Hydrogen is increasingly being acknowledged as a green energy source for decarbonising the heavy-duty transport sector. However, scale-up and consistent refuelling of hydrogen vehicles currently requires expensive cooling technology. Conventional approaches to cooling hydrogen are either very slow to fill vehicle tanks or require a chiller, which are energy intensive and expensive. Current methods are therefore problematic, in that they are operationally unfavourable and undermine the benefit of fuel cell electric vehicles over long charging battery electric vehicles.

    Bratislava DPB Orders 4 Hydrogen Buses from Solaris

    The public transport operator in Bratislava DPB has signed a contract to purchase four Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses. They will be the first ever hydrogen buses not only in Bratislava, but also in Slovakia. According to a framework agreement concluded by DPB with the bus maker, the Slovakian carrier may eventually order up to 40 hydrogen buses. The first four Urbino 12 hydrogen vehicles will be delivered in July next year.

    The heart of the Urbino 12 hydrogen bus is a 70 kW fuel cell pack that acts as a miniature hydrogen power plant aboard the vehicle. The hydrogen system also features auxiliary devices, for instance to supply hydrogen and air at an adequate pressure, to recirculate hydrogen that has not been used up, and also to maintain a proper and stable temperature of the fuel cells during operation. Electricity generated during operation of the vehicle in the fuel cell is passed on directly to the driveline. The hydrogen is stored in gaseous form in cutting-edge composite tanks placed on the bus roof. The hydrogen tanks themselves are rigorously tested, and have been designed to ensure maximum safety for the driver, passengers and pedestrians.

    Unigel Installs Thyssenkrupp Nucera Electrolyzers for Hydrogen

    Unigel has installed the first industrial scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil. The company, which is one of the largest chemical companies in Latin America and the largest manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers in Brazil, invests a total of USD 120 million in the development of the production site for green hydrogen. In the first phase of the project, Unigel installs three 20 MW standard electrolyzers from thyssenkrupp nucera, adding up to a total capacity of 60 MW. The plant will feed one of the largest green ammonia plants by capacity when it starts its production.

    The company plans to quadruple its production of green hydrogen in the years following the inauguration by expanding the electrolyzer plant to a multi-hundred MW facility, which will produce approximately 40,000 tons of green hydrogen. The new factory is expected to employ more than 500 people, so that the chemical company also gives an important impulse for the whole region.

    Located in the Camaçari Industrial Complex, the new plant will have an initial production capacity of 10,000 tons per year of green hydrogen and 60,000 tons peryear of green ammonia. The products will be offered to customers who aim to decarbonize their production chains, e.g. the steel industry, oil refining, and e-fuels. Green ammonia will also be used in the value chain of Unigel, as it is a raw material in the manufacturing of fertilizers and acrylics.

    Hygenco Signs Green Hydrogen Agreement with Jindal Stainless

    India’s stainless steel giant Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd has partnered with Hygenco India to install a Green Hydrogen Plant. This Green Hydrogen Plant will enable the Company to considerably reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 2700 tonnes per annum. The first of its kind off-take agreement in India will see Hygenco Build-Own-Operate the Green Hydrogen facility for 20 years. It will also become the first multi-megawatt scale plant with long-term offtake in Asia to be commissioned in the next 12 months.

    The state-of-the-art and fully autonomous plant will be controlled by an advanced Energy Management and Control System. The system monitors several parameters including hydrogen generation, renewable energy generation, states of charge, pressure, temperature and makes autonomous real-time decisions for achieving high efficiency. The technology enables the company to augment the hydrogen yield and deliver cost-competitive hydrogen to the end clients.

    Ricardo Partners on Hydrogen-Electric Train Trial

    Ricardo, in partnership with Scottish Power, Network Rail Scotland and the University of Leeds, have received next phase energy sector funding to develop their innovative Holistic Hydrogen Approach to Heavy Duty Transport H2H project, which aims to be a catalyst that will help the UK remove all diesel trains from the network by 2040.

    The trial, which will help the UK accelerate achieving its net zero ambitions, received funding for an earlier ‘Discovery’ phase, but has now been granted Alpha Project funding from the Strategic Innovation Fund. This funding mechanism launched in 2021 by energy industry regulator Ofgem and Innovate UK fast-tracks ambitious projects which aim to accelerate the transition over time away from costly imported gas supplies to more homegrown, decarbonised energy at the lowest cost to consumers and turn the UK into a centre of energy innovation. Under the transport theme, three rail projects sought funding, but Ricardo’s was the only one to be successful in its bid.

    The project will pilot the use of green hydrogen, produced via renewable energy sources, to test prototype hydrogen-electric trains with the eventual aim of replacing diesel trains on rural routes in Scotland by 2035. Using renewable electricity that might otherwise be under-utilised, benefits the electricity system and its customers, while hydrogen-electric trains offer the acceleration, low pollution and quiet journey valued by passengers.

    The project starts in August 2022, and the joint Ricardo, Scottish Power, University of Leeds and Network Rail Scotland project team will have six months to explore their concepts in detail, after which, they can enter a further competition for large-scale funding to take their innovation towards market readiness.

    Aramco & SABIC Get TUV Certificate for Blue Hydrogen

    The Saudi Arabian Oil Company Aramco and the SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company have obtained the world’s first independent certifications recognizing blue hydrogen and ammonia production. The certifications were granted by TÜV Rheinland, a leading independent testing, inspection and certification agency based in Germany, to SABIC AN, in Jubail, for 37,800 tonnes of blue ammonia and to Aramco’s wholly-owned refinery, also in Jubail, for 8,075 tonnes of blue hydrogen. To certify ammonia and hydrogen as blue, a significant part of the CO2 associated with the manufacturing process needs to be captured and utilized in downstream applications.

    In 2020, Aramco and SABIC collaborated on the world's first shipment of blue ammonia, a carrier of hydrogen, from Saudi Arabia to Japan. Forty tons of high-grade blue ammonia were dispatched for use in low-carbon power generation.

    The new certifications represent another milestone for Aramco and SABIC to become global leaders in hydrogen and ammonia. Aramco has recently announced its target to produce up to 11 million tonnes per annum of blue ammonia by 2030, and is currently developing carbon capture and hydrogen capabilities. Blue hydrogen production will contribute to Aramco’s ambition to achieve net-zero scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its wholly owned operations by 2050

    Enel Green Power's Bags IPCEI Hy2Tech European Funding

    Enel Green Power’s Hydrogen Industrial Lab is among the winning Italian projects of IPCEI Hy2Tech funding from the 5.4 billion euro fund made available by the European Union for the development of hydrogen-focused initiatives of strategic interest. Enel Green Power’s Hydrogen Industrial Lab, conceived as part of Nexthy, the company's initiative to accelerate the implementation of green hydrogen technologies and business, is an industrial-scale innovation laboratory to be built in Sicily between the municipalities of Sortino and Carlentini in Province of Syracuse.

    The laboratory will facilitate collaboration with start-ups and global players in order to develop, test and validate new technologies for the production and storage of green hydrogen in a business-integrated manner, with the aim of contributing to the cost reduction of this technology, which is necessary to foster the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors, i.e. those industries where direct electrification is not technically efficient or economically viable.

    The unique infrastructure will be integrated with a 4 MW electrolysis system that will serve as a reference for innovative technologies.

    This is an ambitious project that will guarantee a reduction in the CO2 emissions of the partners: thanks to the agreement with Sapio with the Industrial Lab NextHy, the green hydrogen produced will be used by companies that look to this renewable source as the solution for decarbonizing their production processes.

    The laboratory will house experiments in the fields of electrolyzers, storage systems and accessory components such as compressors, instrumentation, valves, new materials and everything else needed to move hydrogen, and will be powered entirely by green energy through the Carlentini wind farm, which is connected to the electricity grid. This will allow those involved to test not only the efficiency and reliability of their electrolysis technologies, but also their ability to offer flexibility services to the grid. The aim is to accelerate the path to the sale and marketing of these technologies by offering partners an environment that is fully representative of the business in which they will be operating.

    ACWA Power Inks MoU with POSCO for Hydrogen Production

    ACWA Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with POSCO Holdings, the holding company of South Korea’s POSCO Group. The agreement will involve the joint development of green hydrogen and its derivatives such as green ammonia, to decarbonise POSCO Group’s power generation, and its steel manufacturing processes, along serving other Korean clients of POSCO Group.

    Green hydrogen and ammonia produced by the partners through new green field investments will support to meet POSCO Group’s ambitious targets to produce 500,000 tonnes of hydrogen globally by 2030. POSCO Group’s output will be used in applications across diverse industries including the company’s own power generation needs, construction, energy, and support other industrial off-takers in South Korea.

    As of 2021, POSCO, the steel making company of POSCO Group, has the capacity to produce 42.9 million tonnes of steel, making it the sixth largest steel producer in the world, and the largest in its home country of South Korea.

    Nikola Decides Locations of 3 Hydrogen Stations in California

    Nikola Corporation has announced the locations of three California hydrogen stations to advance and scale up its long-term hydrogen distribution solutions to service market demand. Nikola’s integrated energy and zero-emissions truck portfolio will be underpinned by developing hydrogen supply and refueling infrastructure, an essential step in helping to decarbonize the heavy-duty transport sector. The three California refueling stations and logistics infrastructure will be located in the cities of Colton, Ontario and a location servicing the Port of Long Beach. To further support truck demand, plans for additional stations are in progress and will be announced in the near future.

    The Ontario location is part of Nikola’s previously announced collaboration with TravelCenters of America.

    There are a number of distribution centers in the city of Colton, making it an ideal location for future Nikola FCEV customers.

    The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are major global commercial transportation hubs and are focused on leading decarbonization. Our station servicing port customers will be a critical anchor of our hydrogen dispensing infrastructure.

    California is a launch market for Nikola and these stations will support key customers and advance the state’s efforts to decarbonize the transport sector.

    Hy2gen to Build Hydrogen Plant in Jänschwalde

    In the Brandenburg municipality of Jänschwalde on the former airfield and future Green Areal Lausitz, a plant for the production of green hydrogen & Sustainable Aviation Fuel is scheduled to go into operation in 2027. Hy2gen is now starting the first project phase with the property owner Euromovement Industriepark GmbH. The total investment volume of the project christened JANGADA amounts to around EUR 500 million. The Wiesbaden-based company Hy2gen operates internationally and has specialized in the planning, construction and operation of plants for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

    In cooperation with Euromovement Industriepark GmbH, Hy2gen plans to establish Jänschwalde as a production site for climate-neutral fuels. The expertise in building and operating the plant comes from Hy2gen, the know-how in infrastructure and logistics from Euromovement. The plant will mainly produce green hydrogen and SAF for use in aviation.

    The current preliminary study, in which all those involved develop binding findings on feasibility, risks and benefits, is followed by the FEED phase, which is scheduled to start in 2023. The actual start of construction is scheduled for 2024, and the plant is scheduled to start production in 2027. The initial electrolyzer capacity is estimated at 123 megawatts.

    Phillips 66 & H2 Energy Europe to Set Up Hydrogen Stations

    Phillips 66 & H2 Energy Europe announced they have closed on a 50-50 joint venture to set up and operate a network of hydrogen refueling retail sites in Germany, Austria and Denmark. JET H2 Energy Austria, the joint venture between subsidiaries Phillips 66 Limited and H2 Energy Europe SA, will combine the retail expertise of Phillips 66 and the hydrogen expertise of H2 Energy and be well positioned to boost the development of hydrogen in Europe. The new company plans to develop approximately 250 hydrogen refueling stations by 2026.

    JET H2 Energy’s network of hydrogen refueling stations for heavy- and light-duty and passenger vehicles will comprise existing JET® branded retail stations as well as new locations on major transport routes and at customer sites. JET H2 Energy will require governmental funding, where applicable, for the development of the refueling network.

    The company intends to supply its sites with green hydrogen and build relationships with customers and original equipment manufacturers. Green hydrogen is a zero-carbon energy carrier and fuel that is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. In vehicles, hydrogen is converted to electricity in fuel cells that power cars and trucks, with water being its only emission.

    JET H2 Energy will benefit from its close ties with Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, the exclusive European reseller of the Hyundai Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck.

    Airbus to Take Hydrogen Contrail Characterisation Challenge

    Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has revealed a flight test programme to study the contrails produced by a hydrogen combustion engine as part the Company’s ZEROe roadmap. The project, named “Blue Condor”, will launch two modified Arcus gliders, one equipped with a hydrogen combustion engine and one equipped with a conventional kerosene-powered combustion engine, in order to compare contrails emitted at high altitudes.

    The Blue Condor demonstrator will be supported by the Perlan Project team, which will be responsible for the modification of the Arcus gliders. They will also provide the high-altitude glider pilots, the same pilots who in 2018 set the world subsonic altitude record – 76,124 feet – in a pressurised glider for Airbus Perlan Mission II.

    The German Research Centre DLR will collect and analyse data captured using their measurement instrumentation sensors on a chase aircraft, while Airbus will ensure the provision of the hydrogen system and equipment, including the combustion engine as well as the details of the flight test mission.

    To ensure 100% comparable data between the hydrogen and conventional engine, the test flights will be carried out back-to-back under the same meteorological conditions. Test flights are scheduled for late 2022 in North Dakota, USA, in collaboration with the University of North Dakota.

    Airbus is also conducting various demonstration programmes including Emission and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuels ECLIF3 and VOL avec Carburants Alternatifs Nouveaux VOLCAN to better understand contrails produced by sustainable aviation fuels.

    Universal Hydrogen to Convert 20 Hydrogen Planes of Avmax

    Hydrogen fuel services and aircraft conversions leader Universal Hydrogen announced that Avmax Aircraft Leasing has placed a firm order to convert 20 regional aircraft to run on green hydrogen. Within this order, Avmax has the flexibility to select between Universal Hydrogen’s ATR 72-600 and Dash 8-300 conversion kits. Further, Universal Hydrogen will provide hydrogen fuel to power both Avmax’s leased and owned fleets. Avmax, a large regional lessor, engineering house, MRO, and global aircraft operator, could also become a maintenance and MRO partner to Universal Hydrogen given the company’s solid North American operating footprint and aircraft conversion capabilities.

    Universal Hydrogen is making hydrogen-powered commercial flight a near-term reality. The company takes a flexible, scalable, and capital-light approach to hydrogen logistics by transporting it in modular capsules over the existing freight network from green production sites directly to the airplane anywhere in the world. The company is targeting regional and narrowbody/single aisle airplanes as the near-term and most impactful decarbonization opportunities. Universal Hydrogen is also working to certify a powertrain conversion kit to retrofit existing regional aircraft to fly on hydrogen.

    ZeroAvia & Edmonton Airport Join for Hydrogen-Planes

    Zero-emission solutions for commercial aviation developer ZeroAvia has announced collaboration with Edmonton International Airport to explore opportunities to develop the hydrogen infrastructure required for delivering zero-emission flights and decarbonizing ground operations. ZeroAvia and Edmonton International Airport will explore opportunities to develop the hydrogen infrastructure required for delivering zero-emission flights and decarbonizing ground operations.

    Under the agreement, EIA will work with ZeroAvia to develop hydrogen infrastructure at both the main airport and Villeneuve Airport. The partnership targets exploring the use of hydrogen for decarbonization of aircraft operations, and also the wider airport ecosystem.

    To support the collaboration, ZeroAvia will leverage its experience in developing and operating its Hydrogen Airport Refuelling Ecosystem, HARE. The partners will begin with gaseous hydrogen as a fuel, whilst exploring a shift to liquid hydrogen - necessary to support aircraft above 50 seats.

    The collaboration will see ZeroAvia and EIA first conduct a pilot program which will fuel a demonstrator aircraft and other operations with the deployed hydrogen ecosystem. The next step will entail working towards establishing some of the world's first commercial routes.

    This collaboration expands on an already impressive set of sustainability initiatives at EIA, including the construction of the world's largest solar farm at an airport set to begin construction in late 2022.

    Markt voor groene waterstof gaat explosief groeien

    De wereldwijde markt voor groene waterstof zal het komende decennium elk jaar met 50 procent groeien. Dat stelt het onderzoekbureau Transparency Market Research in een nieuwe studie. De marktomvang zal toenemen van 2,10 miljard euro nu naar 133.58 miljard euro in 2031.

    Ook de markt voor elektrolysers, de apparaten waarmee groene waterstof geproduceerd wordt zal exponentieel groeien. In een eerder dit jaar gepubliceerd rapport berekende marktonderzoek bureau Guidehouse Insights dat de vraag naar en aanbod van elektrolysers tot 2031 met 8000 procent zal toenemen.

    Groene waterstof onmisbare schakel
    De groeiende vraag naar waterstof wordt veroorzaakt door overheden, die over de hele wereld sterk inzetten op de productie van duurzame energie. Groene waterstof is een onmisbare schakel in een duurzaam energiesysteem. Het kan bijdragen aan het opslaan van overschotten zonne- en windenergie, aardgas vervangen, als duurzame grondstof dienen in de industrie en als brandstof in het zwaar transport.

    Europa aanjager waterstofmarkt
    Met zijn Green Deal, Fit for 55 programma en ambitieuze waterstofstrategie is de Europese Unie een drijvende kracht achter de verwachte groei van zowel de markt voor waterstof als voor elektrolysers, stellen beide onderzoeksbureaus. Ook Duitsland speelt, met het initiatief H2Global, een belangrijke rol in het aanjagen van een wereldwijde markt voor groene waterstof. De speciaal hiervoor in het leven geroepen organisatie koopt groene waterstof tegen een zo laag mogelijke prijs in op de wereldmarkt en verkoopt het vervolgens tegen de hoogste bieder in Europa. De Duitse overheid stelde 900 miljoen euro ter beschikking voor dit initiatief.

    Maar de markt voor groene waterstof beperkt zich zeker niet tot Europa. Over de hele wereld groeit de vraag naar deze duurzame energiedrager. Volgens TMR zijn het vooral de vraag vanuit de chemische industrie en de staalindustrie die de markt voor groene waterstof aanjagen.

    Markt voor elektrolysers
    In de slipstream van de vraag naar groene waterstof groeit ook de markt voor elektrolysers. Volgens het rapport van Guidehouse Insights zal de wereldwijde jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit groeien van 1,3 GW naar 104.6 GW in 2031. Dat klinkt als een enorme toename maar is nog steeds ver onder de productiecapaciteit van 850 Gigawatt die volgens de IEA nodig is om in 2050 een CO2-neutrale economie te bereiken.

    Ook in de productie van elektrolysers gaat Europa aan kop, stellen de onderzoekers, gevolgd door Azië en Australië en Noord Amerika. Van de veertien fabrieken die op gigawattschaal elektrolysers gaan produceren zijn er acht in Europa gevestigd.
