PyroGenesis Selected to Provide $9.2 Million Land-Based System to Destroy PFAS; An Emerging Hazardous Waste Stream

    First Non-Military Land-Based Contract

    October 28, 2021
"PyroGenesis was recently informed that, after a competitive bidding process, it had been selected to provide its plasma based thermal process equipment in a two-phase project geared to providing a land-based system to destroy PFAS. The first phase is to provide pilot testing. The second phase is geared to a full fabrication, furbishing and commissioning of a fully commercial land-based system. The time to completion is, from the signing of the contract, approximately 6 months for the pilot system with the timeframe for the full system to be determined based on Phase 1. Work will not begin until a definitive agreement is signed by both parties. PyroGenesis is currently pursuing two additional opportunities within the same State in the USA."

The PFAS Team developed a Treatment Technologies training module video with content related to this section.

Treatment technologies for PFAS in environmental media are still evolving and it is prudent to use caution in implementing long-term remedies. Selection of remedial actions should prioritize protection of drinking water sources and human health, with consideration of other objectives (such as reducing risk to ecological receptors and environmental resources, liability, source area mass, mass flux, generation of PFAAs from precursors). At some sites, it might be reasonable to take short-term site stabilization actions with the intent of applying more robust and cost-effective technologies as these are developed.

The treatment technologies described in this section are organized by degree of development and implementation, as well as current confidence in the technology based on peer-reviewed literature and the professional judgment of the authors. The levels are field-implemented technologies, limited application technologies, and developing technologies.

"Work will not begin until a definitive agreement is signed by both parties. PyroGenesis is currently pursuing two additional opportunities within the same State in the USA."

PyroGenesis Confirms Delivery of Plasma Torch to One of the World’s Largest Producers of Iron Ore for Use in Induration Furnace

Latest milestone reached towards first-ever implementation of plasma torches in key upstream steelmaking process.

MONTREAL, July 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (http://pyrogenesis.com) (TSX: PYR) (NASDAQ: PYR) (FRA: 8PY), a high-tech company (hereinafter referred to as the “Company” or “PyroGenesis”), that designs, develops, manufactures and commercializes advanced plasma processes and sustainable solutions which are geared to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG), is pleased to announce today that, further to its press release dated February 8, 2022, it has completed the delivery of its 1-MW plasma torch to Client A (the “Client”), for use in the company’s iron ore pelletization system, a key upstream part of the steelmaking process. With all contracted components related to the Company’s plasma torch system now on site, next steps can proceed at the discretion of the client.

“This on-schedule delivery signals the push into the final leg of this journey,” said Mr. P. Peter Pascali, CEO and Chair of PyroGenesis. “Since we announced our participation in the international consortium studying the use of plasma in iron ore pelletization for the first time, the response to the possibilities presented by our plasma torches, and the subsequent scale at which several of the world’s largest iron ore producers and steelmakers have been willing to investigate such a major change to their process in partnership with PyroGenesis, has been remarkable.”

The installation of the plasma torch system and all related peripherals is estimated to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks, after which a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) will be performed.

The SAT was initially scheduled to be completed for the end of July 2022. The Client has recently informed PyroGenesis that they would prefer to extend the process by up to an additional 90 days. This additional time was requested due to delays in implementing significant modifications to their site that the Client is making, at their expense. The Client has assured PyroGenesis that all required civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering work are advancing as required, and this process extension represents changes to scheduling and reallocation of materials and personnel, with all objectives remaining the same.

“It is extremely exciting to have a technology that can directly and significantly reduce carbon emissions in the upstream step of steelmaking. It is such a rare opportunity,” continued Mr. Pascali. “By replacing heavily polluting diesel and bunker fuel burners with clean combustion-less plasma torches, iron ore pelletizers around the world will dramatically reduce their reliance on environmentally damaging fossil fuels. And now, after extensive modeling, simulations, business case development, production, and live factory tests – during a period that was engulfed by a global pandemic – our plasma torch system for iron ore pelletization is now on-site with the Client in preparation for first-ever live factory usage toward that carbon reduction goal. We are excited to have reached this final stage and we look forward to working with the Client during the installation and final site acceptance testing phase.”

As previously disclosed, Client A is a multi-billion-dollar international producer of iron ore pellets and one of the largest in the industry, whose name will remain confidential for competitive reasons. The Client, which has committed to reduce its GHG emissions, has over ten (10) iron ore pelletization plants, each possibly requiring up to 50 plasma torches, or more than 500 torches in total.

It has also been previously disclosed that the Client requested and received from PyroGenesis a cost estimate for 36 plasma torches of between USD $75-$95 million (Cdn equivalent: $95-115 million).

PyroGenesis holds the global patent for the use of plasma torches in iron ore pelletization.

did have some issues with the taping of the AGM questions & answers section of the meeting, mostly because an investor present did not want to be filmed and that resulted in us losing some of the videos from the meeting.

Now I see that “Pennymaker69” is claiming that the video edits were made to hide his “friend” more pointy questions … That could not be further from reality since, in addition to answering the questions during the video, I also took the time to reply to each question.

So, for the benefit of all, I will therefore post the questions and my replies that were made to a follow-up email sent after the AGM. My replies are in RED, BOLD and ITALIC

In 2019, PyroGenesis partnered with French metal industrialization company Aubert & Duval to help develop the NextGen technology. A subsidiary of the world’s second largest maker of high-power, press-forged parts Eramet, Aubert & Duval buys titanium powder exclusively from PyroGenesis to distribute it in Europe. Now, PyroGenesis is in the process of establishing full distribution agreements, including distribution planning, order planning, and logistics.”

Additionally, a tier one North American aerospace company has agreed to qualify of the titanium powder to set the Canadian plasma business to become an approved supplier. This will include evaluating PyroGenesis’s manufacturing methods, powder samples, and mechanical and chemical properties before printing test coupons. Pyrogenesis believes they are nearing the end of this initial testing process before approval of non-manufacturing processes (e.g., quoting, handling, storing, shipping, logistics, etc.). Final approval is anticipated to occur in Q4 2022.

Meet the 50 fastest-growing green companies in Canada
Clean tech and sustainability innovators are among the fastest growing Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs this year

    14. PyroGenesis Canada

    GROWTH RATE: 75%

PyroGenesis Canada’s edge is white-hot innovation. Its plasma-based technologies, developed over 30 years, use temperatures as high as 5,500°C – as hot as the surface of the sun – to improve on four traditional industrial processes: atomizing metal powders; producing iron ore pellets; maximizing recovery of aluminum, copper and zinc from waste metals; and improving on conventional incineration techniques to reduce hazardous and medical waste to inert, harmless residue. PyroGenesis’s solutions cut the costs of each process and slash their carbon footprints – a double whammy the firm labels “Transformlutionary.”

For years, plasma was a process looking for an application. Now, in a recent report the company claims that “PyroGenesis has harnessed the many advantages of plasma and developed economic processes which are challenging the status quo.” At its Montreal headquarters and manufacturing facility, PyroGenesis is also exploring new applications for its technology, such as transforming quartz into high-purity silicon metal and converting hazardous residues from aluminum production into a low-carbon fuel and safe, recyclable components.

    Pierre Carabin
One of CIM Magazine’s 2022 Names to Know
By Rosalind Stefanac July 18, 2022

As the minerals and metals industry looks to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, innovators like Pierre Carabin at PyroGenesis Canada are helping pilot new technologies that make that prospect more likely.

Carabin has spent the last 24 years with the Montreal-based high-tech company that designs, develops and manufactures advanced plasma torches, among other emission-reducing innovations, for a variety of industries. In recent years, PyroGenesis has turned its attention to mining and metallurgy, and has begun creating plasma-torch alternatives to fossil fuel burners for iron ore pelletization because they produce thermal energy from low-carbon electricity.

“We see ourselves as the Tesla of the industry, not just in electrifying pelletization in iron ore but in applying these concepts to the entire mining industry,” said Carabin, who is the company’s chief technology officer and chief strategist. “What we bring with our plasma technology is a relatively simple way of decarbonizing processes.”

PyroGenesis has already made significant inroads in bringing its technology into practice. In 2017, the company was granted a patent for its design and in early 2019, PyroGenesis was contracted to pilot a clean-heating-source 900-kilowatt plasma torch for Sweden’s RISE Energy Centre AB to replace traditional burners in furnaces and kilns for iron-ore pelletization. The testing was successfully completed in nine months, addressing a major industry concern around greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction.

The global iron-ore pellet industry generates approximately 40 million metric tonnes of CO2 every year, equivalent to the combined yearly emissions of 8.7 million passenger vehicles. Using plasma torches has the potential to not only reduce operating costs by up to 30 per cent, but significantly reduce pollution. “We estimate that the iron-ore industry could reduce its GHG emissions by 35 per cent if it were to switch all its fossil-fuel heating to plasma,” said Carabin.

The fact that there are mining companies and metal producers already on board has him even more excited. “We’ve gone from pilot to real industrial demonstration and will reach full deployment within the next few years,” said Carabin. “My dream is to see this technology adopted in many other sectors, such as steelmaking and aluminum, so that eventually we have very little use for fossil fuel for heating purposes.”

He said he is very encouraged that the mining sector is taking action in improving its environmental footprint, and that he and his team will have contributed to changing the industry for the better. “I’ve spent my career in ‘clean tech,’ where we are using technology to reduce our carbon footprint and pollution,” he said. “It’s so important to me that I can do this job.”
