Vlaanderen koploper in thuisbatterijen, Nederland omarmt nieuwe markt grootschalige energieopslag

‘In welk kwartaal alles weer “back to normal” is, is echter moeilijk te voorspellen.

    Published on :
    16 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

Pivot Power, part of EDF Renewables, has broken ground on a grid-scale battery storage facility in Sandwell, northwest of Birmingham. Connected to the transmission network at National Grid’s Bustleholme substation, the site will help to create a greener energy grid and accelerate the UK’s drive to net zero. The 50MW/100MWh lithium-ion battery will store enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes for 2 hours1. It will support the integration of more renewable energy and increase the resiliency of the electricity system by automatically charging and discharging to balance supply and demand and manage intermittency.

The Sandwell site forms an integral part of Pivot Power’s Energy Superhub network, designed to deliver up to 2 GW of transmission-connected battery storage and high-volume power connections across the UK.

Sandwell will be one of the first communities in the country to benefit from this unique infrastructure investment, which will reduce the region’s carbon emissions, improve air quality, and support sustainable economic growth.

Alongside a similar site in Coventry, which is due to begin construction in early 2022, it will replicate core elements of Pivot Power’s Energy Superhub Oxford project, one of the most ambitious urban decarbonisation projects undertaken in the UK to date which combines a cutting-edge 50MW hybrid battery with Europe’s most powerful electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

The site will also help to supercharge the West Midlands’ green transport revolution by creating the power infrastructure for mass-scale, rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging. Once work has been completed on the battery, Pivot Power plans to install a private-wire network, creating the power infrastructure to deliver large amounts of power for rapid EV charging to strategic locations in the local area, from public charging hubs to bus depots and commercial fleets.

Florida Power & Light unveils world's largest solar-powered battery
    161 Views

A Florida utility has unveiled what it says is the world’s largest solar-powered battery storage system, Kallanish reports.

The announcement came from Florida Power & Light in a night-time ceremony with lights and drones powered by the battery earlier this week at the Manatee Solar Energy Center in Florida’s Manatee County.

The $300 million battery has a 409-megawatt capacity and can deliver 900 megawatt-hours of energy, the equivalent of 100m iPhone batteries or enough energy to power about 329,000 homes for more than two hours, says the company, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy. That is also enough energy to power Disney World for seven hours, it says. The project will help increase the predictability of solar, the company says.

The project includes 132 battery containers on 40 acres, equivalent to 30 football fields. It sits next to the existing 74.5 MW Manatee solar facility. Electricity will be stored in the batteries when the sun is shining and power is cheaper due to low demand. That power will be added to the grid when demand peaks and power is more expensive. It will reduce the runtime of local fossil-fueled power plants, reduce carbon emissions and help the company to retire two aging natural gas-fired peaking power plants that together produce 1.638 gigawatts of power.

The company had previously said the battery project would save its customers about $100m over its lifetime by offsetting fuel costs.

“This battery is another example of how FPL has become a leader in clean energy and sustainability without sacrificing affordability or reliability,” says president and ceo Eric Silagy in a statement.

Construction started last February on the battery system in Parrish, Florida.

The utility with 11m customers in Florida says it has installed 13m solar panels and is 45% of the way to reaching its goal of installing 30m solar panels across the state by 2030. It operates 42 solar facilities with eight more expected to come online in early 2022. The company is adding other smaller battery projects in the state.

    22 Dec, 2021, 5:35 am

Sembcorp Industries wholly-owned subsidiary Sembcorp Energy UK plans to build Europe’s largest battery energy storage system to help the UK achieve its Net Zero target. As part of Sembcorp Energy UK’s growing battery storage portfolio, SEUK intends to construct a 360MW battery at its site at Wilton International on Teesside. Following COP26 discussions, this development signals a major step by SEUK that will further support the UK’s Net Zero targets, helping to ensure the resilience of the electricity network and further enable the increasing growth of renewables.

At the Wilton International site, SEUK has available land and connections ready to enable swift instalment of the batteries, which will be built in tranches.

SEUK currently operates 70MW of batteries, with a further 50MW already in the pipeline and due to be operational in early 2022. As one of the UK’s largest battery portfolios, the units can supply power and other services to the national grid in a matter of milliseconds, and such rapid response time is crucial to maintaining a secure and stable energy system that will aid the UK’s low-carbon transition.

The plans for both this battery portfolio expansion, and the first-of-a-kind 300MW net zero emissions plant – Whitetail Clean Energy – announced in July 2021, align SEUK’s growth with technologies that support a greener future. Should all these developments proceed, SEUK’s total energy portfolio would be expected to total over 1.6GW, with almost half a gigawatt being supplied by batteries.

Canada: Polestar Developing Its Own EV Batteries, Motors, Architecture
POLESTAR DEVELOPING ITS OWN EV BATTERIES, MOTORS, ARCHITECTURE

Polestar isn't messing around. The company didn't exist in its current form a few years ago, and plans to go from zero sales in 2018 to 290,000 annual sales by 2025, with a break-even point by 2023 and profitability by 2025. Here's how. Gregor Hembrough, head of Polestar Americas, told Green Car Reports earlier this month at a Polestar 1 drive that the future of Polestar really has nothing to do with, nor does it look like, the Polestar of today. "There's no reason the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 will be talked about in the same sentence," Hembrough said.

Polestar's goal is exponential growth with the introduction of the Polestar 3, Polestar 4, and Polestar 5. The automaker's target is the Porsche Cayenne with the Polestar 3, which it has already said will be a performance-focused EV. The Polestar 4 is aiming for the Porsche Macan. And the Polestar 5 will be putting a bullseye on the Porsche Panamera and Taycan. Specifically, Hembrough said, "Polestar wants to be a Porsche competitor, in design, performance, and innovation." To that end, Polestar's developing its own electric motors in-house in Sweden. Codenamed P10, the new electric motor will be about 1.5 times more powerful than those in the Porsche Taycan, with the target being 475 kw (a little over 600 hp). The motors will be compact at 36 by 50 by 64 cm) and connect to a 2-speed gearbox and the ability to disconnect for efficiency gains. It was noted by Hembrough that Polestar's new motors would not be shared with Volvo or Lotus, both of which are partners and sit within the parent company, Geely, automotive group. Polestar's UK team is currently developing a new in-house designed battery pack with Volvo and Lotus (the latter two will have access to the pack) with a new 800-volt electrical architecture. The new design will incorporate simplified compatibility with 400V fast-charging as well.

Hembrough was tight lipped on battery cell type, supplier information, and peak charge rate, but he noted at 103 kwh the pack would charge to 80% in 20 minutes or less. Bi-directional capability and V2X charging scenarios are also baked into the component set, at a rate of up to 20 kw.

All these components will sit within a new aluminum space frame architecture Polestar's developing as a clean-sheet platform for the Polestar 5. Volvo and Lotus will not have access to the new platform, according to Hembrough, though the executive noted Lotus will likely help with certain synergies such as suspension tuning. The Polestar 3, which will go into production in a year with deliveries taking place in Q1 of 2023, will ride on Volvo's SPA2 platform, Hembrough said. This will be the same platform underpinning the Volvo XC90 successor, though it's yet to be seen if any of these new components make their way into the Polestar 3.

Hembrough said Polestar will begin taking orders by the middle of 2022 for the Polestar 3, with the Polestar 3 to follow in 2023 and Polestar 5 in 2024.

RWE Build EV Battery based Eenergy Storage at Audi Herdecke

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

A joint energy transition project between RWE and Audi is breaking new ground. In Herdecke in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany, RWE has put an energy storage system consisting of used lithium-ion batteries from Audi EVs into operation. Using 60 such battery systems, this novel storage technology will be able to provide temporary storage for about 4.5 megawatt hours of electricity at the site of the RWE pumped-storage power plant at the Hengsteysee reservoir. The decommissioned batteries supplied for the project come from Audi e-tron development vehicles. At the end of their first life in the cars, they still have a residual capacity of more than 80 percent. That means these second-life batteries are ideally suited for use in stationary electricity storage systems. Depending on how they are used, the batteries could still have a remaining service life of one to ten years. And they’re much cheaper than new cells. That’s where second life comes in: The carbon emissions generated when the batteries were produced are spread sustainably across two service lives, one in the car and one in the storage system.

For the 60 batteries, each weighing about 700 kilograms, RWE has built a 160 square meter hall using lightweight construction methods at its pumped storage power plant location in Herdecke. Work on installing the battery systems inside the building began in October, and the process of commissioning the individual components kicked off in November. RWE expects to begin marketing the storage capacity of its second-life battery storage system from the beginning of 2022, initially to help maintain the frequency in the electricity grid. The plan is then to test other marketing methods on a flexible basis.

RWE intends to draw on the insights gained from the reference storage system in Herdecke to build and operate larger storage systems based on EV batteries in the future. This will involve an innovative system in which pairs of modules are connected in series, thus boosting the operating voltage and reducing costs.

The second-life battery storage system in Herdecke is one of ten battery projects RWE is implementing in the US, Germany and Ireland. In parallel, the company is working on innovative projects such as redox flow batteries or battery storage systems with a virtual connection to hydropower stations. By 2030, the company will have increased its battery storage capacity from the current level of 600 megawatts to 3 gigawatts.
