Timminco has won supply contracts with solar cell makers, including the world's largest, Q-Cells AG. Timminco's silicon facility in Bécancour, Que., is ramping up production from 124 tonnes of solar silicon in the first quarter to roughly 900 tonnes a quarter by the end of the year.

In 2009, it will spend $90-million to expand capacity to 14,400 tonnes a year from 3,600.

Timminco's capital costs are far less than those of competitors in the same business. Norway's Elkem SA, for example, is spending more than $700-million to construct a solar silicon upgrading plant with less capacity than Timminco's plant.

Mr. Schimmelbusch said Timminco could soon be the world's largest producer of upgraded metallurgical silicon for solar cells. As the "challenging and stressful" production ramp-up progresses, he believes the questions surrounding the company will begin to fade away.

"We have here a very significant innovation which has the potential of making a significant mark on the solar industry," he said.

Kortom, goed markt gevoel onze Heinz.

    Opfrisser:

AMG Lithium GmbH acquires land for Lithium Hydroxide Refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen

The Dutch subsidiary AMG Lithium GmbH of the group AMG - Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V., announced today its decision to build the first lithium refinery in Germany, in Saxony-Anhalt, in the Chemical Park Bitterfeld-Wolfen!

Managing Director of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Einsfelder:

"We congratulate the management of the Chemical Park Max Fuhr, Patrice Heine as well as Kai Uwe Krauel and all partners involved in the project to this great success! With the lithium production, an important part of the value creation for electric cars is brought to Saxony-Anhalt and we come an important step closer to our goal of establishing potentials and innovations along the entire value chain for lithium-ion batteries here.

Saxony-Anhalt is ideally positioned as a location for battery cell production in Germany - from battery chemistry and material production to battery development and testing. Not only are the raw materials and materials supplied here, but the battery for tomorrow is also being thought through further. In the area of storage solutions and with its competencies in the field of battery endurance testing, the country is excellently positioned.
We are pleased that there is now a change in thinking when it comes to lithium. Lithium hydroxide is needed for the production of cathode material, a key component of a battery. The production of hydroxide in the purity required for cell production would be another important step in the production of electric cars for Germany.

So far, battery manufacturers have been very dependent on lithium hydroxide from the Far East. In the meantime, both automotive and battery manufacturers have realized that it makes perfect sense to produce batteries for electric cars in Europe and become more independent in the value chain. Saxony-Anhalt is well equipped to benefit as a location here. We are aggressively offering ourselves - for battery production and also for automotive manufacturing."

Today, AMG Lithium GmbH and Chemiepark Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH concluded a purchase agreement for a plot of land on the premises of Chemiepark Bitterfeld-Wolfen. On this property, AMG Lithium will build a production plant for lithium hydroxide battery-grade. The aim is to supply the European battery industry with this key raw material reliably and with short delivery routes.

Lithium hydroxide battery-grade is used to produce cathode materials that are installed in cells for lithium-ion batteries. The battery grade quality produced in this plant is characterized by an extremely low content of impurities - an essential requirement for use in battery cells.

"By locating AMG, we will further strengthen our position in Energy Materials," says Patrice Heine, managing director of CPG. "We are currently feeling a lot of momentum in the segment, with new battery materials or, for example, porous materials for capacitors. In the medium term, we want to bring the entire value chain for battery materials to our site - and, by truly recycling the batteries, transfer them to a sustainable circular economy.“

"On the property, we will initially build a plant with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons. This is scheduled to go into operation in 2023," says Stefan Scherer, managing director of AMG Lithium GmbH. "The size of the property is such that we will be able to increase the annual capacity to up to 100,000 tons in subsequent years by adding further modules," Scherer added.

The availability of battery materials is the central driver for the sustainable success of the mega trends electromobility and stationary energy storage. Therefore, Chemiepark Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH is very pleased about the settlement of AMG Lithium GmbH with Germany's first lithium refinery.
