    About that air gap

Garlinghouse went on to explain why XRP could not be considered a security, “A security is something that represents ownership in a company that gives you rights to dividends, gives you rights to governance. XRP and Ripple are two separate things. We have shareholders, we have investors that include Google Ventures, we have banks that have invested their own share of Ripple the company. When you buy XRP, that doesn’t give you any rights to the profits or ownership of Ripple the company. If Ripple the company shutdown tomorrow, the XRP ledger would continue to operate.”

Responding to claims that Ripple maintains a centralized XRP ledger, he said, “People are saying the XRP ledger is centralized. It’s factually not true. The XRP ledger is fully decentralized. Ripple the company cannot control the XRP ledger apart from the fact that you control a handful of nodes. We control, I think, 7% of all of the public nodes on the XRP ledger. In contrast, you have (three) miners in China that control north of 50% of the Bitcoin blockchain. By any measure, the Bitcoin blockchain is more centralized that the XRP ledger. People say Ripple can block a transaction. Not true. Can we rollback a transaction? We actually can’t.”

    And the crash…

Addressing concerns about the drop in XRP price, Garlinghouse commented, “18 months ago the entire crypto market was worth $20 billion. Today it’s worth $230 billion. In between it hit about $850 billion. If we drew a straight line from 18 months ago to today you’d say it’s been a huge bull market. There have been in the last five or six years multiple crashes that have been effectively reconsolidation. You’re going to see a separation between those that are purely speculative and those that are actually solving real utility problems in the marketplace.”

    Unintended consequences

Arrington shared his thoughts on what will happen if the U.S. continues with their lack of support for the blockchain ecosystem. “I’m Libertarian. I don’t like the government in general. 80-90% of our investments are in Asia, Europe and Israel right now, because they’re actually countries where there’s enough regulatory certainty that entrepreneurs feel safe starting their blockchain companies there. Here they don’t. There’s so much regulatory uncertainty. And then add to that the tax burden and the visa burdens of coming here. And then our current federal government’s stance on immigration in general. They’re just saying f*ck it, and they’re staying in Singapore, Israel and Europe, instead of coming here and starting companies. The SEC needs to get their act together. If they had done that with the Internet in 1994, 1995, none of us would be here. We’d all be living in Shanghai or somewhere else. They’re single-handedly wrecking the stage of technology development.”

Garlinghouse added, “There are unequivocally bad actors in the ICO ecosystem. There have been frauds and massive scams. Hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars have been heisted and if anything, I’m surprised the SEC hasn’t been more aggressive going after some of those bad actors. I agree that there is a risk that a lot of this development ends up non-US. The impact on the United States economy for having the Internet that we think of today being very U.S. centric has been very positive for the United States.”

Butcher continued, “Your criticism of Ethereum is it’s got a big developer network, and you’re trying to boost the amount of developers using XRP with Xpring. You’re trying to boost the market, do you think?

    2 uur geleden in FINANCIEEL

Ripple to Face SEC Suit Over XRP Cryptocurrency
Agency, whose chairman is leaving soon, claims the company violated investor-protection laws when it sold the bitcoin-like digital asset
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse says the Securities and Exchange Commission is ‘wrong in matter of law and fact.’

Ripple Inc. said it will defend itself against a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission that claims the company violated investor-protection laws when it sold a bitcoin-like digital asset called XRP.

The suit, which hasn’t yet been filed, would be one of the highest-profile SEC actions against a cryptocurrency pioneer, just as the regulator’s chairman is departing at the end of the Trump administration. The SEC over the past few years has brought and mostly won civil lawsuits alleging startups trampled securities laws when they raised money by selling cryptocurrencies.

None of those companies, though, was as big as Ripple and XRP. Ripple had a $10 billion valuation in its most recent funding round in 2019, and XRP is the third-largest cryptocurrency by market value.

A representative for the SEC wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Ripple said it was informed by the commission on Monday that regulators soon plan to sue the company, Chief Executive Brad Garlinghouse and co-founder Chris Larsen in federal civil court. The company and the officers say they plan to fight the claims.

XRP trading and deposits to be halted for US customers
    25 DEC 2020
In light of the recent SEC filing against Ripple Labs Inc., which alleges that XRP is a security, we are going to halt all trading and deposits of XRP for our US customers on 8 January 2021 at 9 PM UTC.

We will closely follow the unfolding situation and continue to adapt accordingly.

Our US customers will still be able to withdraw XRP from Bitstamp. Customers from other countries are not affected.

Thank you for your continued support in this matter. We will post updates here and on Twitter as more information becomes available.

    Ripple

One of Ripple Labs’ big financial backers is looking to reverse its bet on the XRP issuer.

Tetragon Financial Group LTD, the multi-billion asset manager-turned-plaintiff, had led Ripple’s $200 million funding round in December 2019. On Monday night the U.K.-based firm moved to exit its position in a sealed filing in Delaware Chancery Court, according to Bloomberg.

Just weeks ago the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission put Ripple’s future in doubt with a blockbuster suit alleging XRP (+10.64%) to be an unregistered security. That’s spooked the XRP markets and now, apparently, Ripple investors, too.

Tetragon seeks to “enforce its contractual right to require Ripple to redeem” Series C preferred stock, Bloomberg reported. In the meantime, Tetragon wants the court to essentially freeze Ripple’s liquid assets until it pays.

Ripple rejected the lawsuit Tuesday. In a legal filing shared with CoinDesk the fintech said Tetragon can only opt to flip its Ripple equity back to cash “if XRP is deemed to be a security on a go forward basis.”

“Since there has been no such determination, this lawsuit has no merit. We are disappointed that Tetragon is seeking to unfairly take advantage of the lack of regulatory clarity here in the U.S. The courts will provide this clarity and we are very confident in our position.”

The filings were not immediately available at press time.

Ripple Open To Burning Nearly 50 Billion XRP Locked In Escrow – CEO Brad Garlinghouse

Ripple has been in the news for some undesired reasons of late, especially due to the ongoing case pitting the company against the US SEC. However, that hasn’t stopped Ripple’s crypto, XRP, from blossoming, although it hasn’t gained by much compared to other top cryptos like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

For years now, members of the XRP community have called out Ripple for stalling its price by flooding the market with millions of XRP unlocked from escrow every month. Some have even called for an XRP fork to put a stop to Ripple’s meddling. Now, there seems to emerge a new angle that could solve this burning issue and possibly send XRP price skyrocketing.
Ripple Wouldn’t Stop A Coin Burn

During a recent interview hosted by Thinking Crypto, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse affirmed the possibility of a new era for XRP. When asked if the locked XRP could be burned, the CEO said that he was welcoming workable opinions on how to solve the impasse, adding that he doesn’t rule out any possibility.

This scenario was entertained way back in December by Ripple’s CTO David Schwartz while responding to a tweet in a thread. According to the CTO, Ripple wouldn’t act against a community resolution to burn the XRP coins in escrow.
    No Dumping Of XRP

Brad following that assertion with an even more colorful opinion, saying that it would be counter-productive for Ripple to dump the locked XRP into the market. It goes without saying that such action would gravely degrade the token’s price and possibly instigate a serious exodus of users from the XRP ecosystem.

At the moment, Ripple holds around 47 billion tokens worth roughly $64 billion. These coins are locked in an XRP Escrow set to gradually release them for sale in the market. Notably, the XRP in escrow is slightly more than the 45 billion XRP already circulating in the market.
