Underlying Sopheon's trading update this morning is some cautious optimism that in spite of losses still being substantial this year trading is significantly up in a tough market and costs and cash burn under control. Sopheon (SPE) provides product development software that uses the concepts of knowledge management and decision support to facilitate the product development cycle in any large organisation. The company said losses before amortisation fro the year to December are expected to be in line with expectations at £8.9 million, and that in spite of the tough trading environment it has managed to drive costs out of the business and significantly reduce cash burn. During the year the company made 30 sales of its Accolade software, compared with just four the previous year. Of the 30 'transactions,' as Sopheon calls them, there were ten initial licences and six additional licences as well as 15 assessments. The reason Sopheon calls them transactions is because not all are full blown licence sales with ongoing software usage attached. The 15 assessments are one-off fees for trying out the software. That said, at the end of the year Sopheon reckons it had nine assessments in progress that could well convert to licence sales as against just one at the same time last year. The other part of Sopheon's business, information management, has had a tougher time. Information management provides a service to research and development departments using Sopheon's own research experts. The company said this division has had a particularly torrid time in Germany, where its customers have been affected by merger and rationalisation activity. It expects conditions to remain tough this year in all geographies. In the six months to June, Sopheon saw turnover rise to £6.5 million from £6.1 million, and losses before write-offs were down to £5.3 million from £6.1 million. It had £7.1 million of cash in June. House broker Seymour Pierce was looking for losses next year reduced to £3 million, but analyst Alan Matthews told Citywire there was a possibility he may be able to revise the loss down once he's digested the detail of today's news. He said Sopheon has cut costs dramatically and he was encouraged by the strong product sales. These are higher margin than the service business, but so far Accolade represents only about 25% of sales. This does however mean there is good potential for strongly increased margins if the software sales continue to improve this year as they have done last year. Shares are down 0.5p at 11.25p, valuing Sopheon at £9.3 million. They reached 18.75p in December after plunging as low as 4.5p in October and had been one of the year 2000 crazy stocks that hit a mind-blowing £17. Citywire Verdict: Sopheon appointed Seymour Pierce as its broker in September, and at the time of writing about the company in October, there were no forecasts out in the market. I there warned that even at 5.75p, 'anyone thinking of taking a punt would be pretty much sticking a pin in and hoping for the best,' but so far the punt would have paid off. It is good to see a bit more clarity from the company now, and there are early signs that real software licence sales are starting to take off. Things are moving in the right direction but this is still little more than a start-up in many respects, so there are still plenty of risks. Another couple of significant licence wins would really start to offer comfort, and investors will have to decide just how much risk they are prepared to take on. ©2003 Citywire
