jammer dat ik pas bij het ontwaken die stevige + zag.

maar ik was daar natuurlijk gerust in, kan volgens mij nog vervolgd worden.

Ik zie hem toch verder stijgen komende weken.

Lenovo Profit Triples to Record as Shipments Climb (Update6)

By Mark Lee and Janet Ong

Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Lenovo Group Ltd., Asia's biggest personal-computer seller, tripled profit to a record, beating estimates, after adding sales agents to increase shipments. The company plans to sell its mobile-phone unit to focus on PCs.

Net income rose to $171.7 million, or 1.76 cents per share, in the third quarter ended Dec. 31, from $57.7 million, or 0.64 cent, a year earlier, said the Chinese-owned company, based in the U.S. since its purchase of International Business Machines Corp.'s PC unit in May 2005. Lenovo shares jumped to the highest in three weeks in Hong Kong trading on the earnings announcement.

Lenovo increased its distribution networks in India and eastern Europe and sold more notebooks in China, expanding in emerging markets to narrow the gap with Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. Lenovo will sell its handset unit for $100 million after shipments slumped 31 percent, while PCs climbed 22 percent.

``Emerging-market demand for PCs will maintain good growth, even as the slowing economies in the U.S. and Europe hurt technology spending there,'' said Linus Yip, a strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

Lenovo shares rose 13 percent to HK$5.37 as of the 4 p.m. end of trade today, the highest since Jan. 11, after resuming trading following a suspension in the morning. The stock was halted from to give investors more time to consider the disposal of the handset unit, the company said in a filing to the exchange.

The company was expected to report net income of $119.4 million, the average of five analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales climbed 15 percent to $4.6 billion.

    Gross Profit Margin

Lenovo's gross profit margin, or the percentage of sales left after deducting production costs, widened to 15.2 percent in the three months to December, from 15.1 percent in the previous quarter. The company benefited from lower component costs and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the yuan, Chief Financial Officer Wong Wai Ming said on a conference call today.

Prices of dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, chips, used to store frequently used data in computers, may fall 27 percent in the current quarter, after declining 85 percent last year because of a glut, according to Joyce Yang, an analyst at Dramexchange.com, Asia's biggest spot market for the chips.

Lenovo's sales in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong accounted for $1.83 billion, or 40 percent, of revenue in the three months through December. The yuan's 7 percent gain against the U.S. currency in 2007 has increased the dollar value of Lenovo's sales in China, its biggest market.

    Boosting Spending

The company's gross margin may ``fluctuate in the next few quarters'' as it increases spending to expand in emerging markets such as India and Latin America, Wong said.

The Chinese company is boosting spending in developing economies including eastern Europe, which ``are similar markets to China, so Lenovo's experience enables it to ramp up quite quickly.'' Andrew Lin, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Macquarie Securities Ltd., said before the announcement.

Lenovo faces increased competition from Taipei-based Acer Inc., which overtook the Chinese company as the world's third- largest computer maker in the three months ended December after acquiring the U.S.'s Gateway Inc.

Global market share for Lenovo fell to 7.5 percent from 8.2 percent three months earlier, according to Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC. Still, it increased shipments 22 percent to 5.8 million PCs in the quarter, the researcher said.

Hewlett-Packard kept its No. 1 position with 19 percent market share in the quarter, ahead of the 14.6 percent for second- placed Dell, according to IDC.

    IdeaPad Notebooks

Lenovo said this month it started selling IdeaPad notebooks in 14 markets including the U.S., France, Russia and Australia, after previously offering products to consumers only in China and other countries in southeast Asia.

Lenovo may derive 45 percent of next fiscal year's sales from retail customers, compared with 35 percent at present, Macquarie's Lin said.

Its retail strategy may help Chief Executive Officer William Amelio weather an expected slowdown in technology spending by companies in the U.S. and Europe as the economies weaken, First Shanghai's Yip said.

``In the past two quarters, we have still seen steady buying with respect to our large-account business,'' Amelio said on the conference call today. ``There was a bit of choppiness toward the back half of the year.''

Lenovo is gaining sales of related services including technical support and software to diversify from its PC business, Amelio said. The company will offer computer servers outside China by the end of this year, after licensing technology from IBM, he said.

Hony Capital, a private equity fund controlled by Lenovo's parent, Legend Holdings Ltd., will buy the mobile-phone operations, the computer maker said in a statement.

Ericsson provides built-in HSPA mobile broadband technology for Lenovo notebook PCs

Monday February 4, 3:08 am ET

    STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 4, 2008 --
Ericsson and Lenovo, the world's third largest PC maker, have aligned to provide mobile broadband modules based on HSPA - the world's most widely commercially deployed technology for mobile broadband. Select Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks will include mobile broadband modules beginning in 2008. Lenovo is Ericsson's first announced mobile broadband module customer.

HSPA provides a DSL-like experience wirelessly and is currently capable of peak download rates of up to 14.4 Mbps and peak upload rates of up to 2.0 Mbps. There are currently more than 160 commercially deployed HSPA networks globally, serving more than one billion subscribers.

"Lenovo is committed to PC innovation and providing our customers the latest functionality and tools to enhance their computing experience," said, Frances K. O'Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Product Group, Lenovo. "Our engineering team is working with Ericsson's engineers to deliver ThinkPads with the fastest and most reliable connectivity available. We firmly believe that this effort will dramatically change the user mobile experience, allowing ThinkPad customers to more easily search, download, share, and store information and content when they want."

"With mobile networks being upgraded globally to handle greater demand for Internet services and data connectivity, consumers are increasingly utilizing mobile phones and notebooks to access the high-capacity services that they have typically experienced only through a wired or WiFi connection," said Kurt Jofs, Executive Vice President and head of Business Unit Networks, Ericsson. "Today, Ericsson is doing for broadband what the company did for telephony 20 years ago - making it mobile and available to everyone, everywhere. We respect Lenovo's innovative approach to business and their vision in this maket and we look forward to future opportunities to work with them to create even more advanced mobile computing solutions that translate into direct customer value."

Lenovo Launches Global Olympic Philanthropic Campaign
    Thursday February 7 2:00 AM

To mark the six-month countdown to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, PC company Lenovo, Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay and TOP Sponsor of the Olympic Games, today announced a global online philanthropic beginning Feb. 8 in the United Kingdom. Just as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay will travel around the world, a new Lenovo auction will begin each week in a different country counting down to the Olympic Games. The auction features limited-edition, notebook PCs inspired by the Lenovo-designed Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch.
Recently announced torch relay items also designed by Lenovo that share the same theme and inspiration include the lantern that will carry the flame around the world and the cauldron lit at the end of the relay day in each city.

Over the next six months, a series of "Cloud of Promise"-themed notebook PCs will be available for bidding at www.lenovohopefundauctions.com throughout ten-day periods. Many of these limited-edition notebook PCs will be autographed by Lenovo Champions - athlete ambassadors - offering fans the opportunity to bid and own a part of Olympic history. The auctions will take place in: Japan, Australia, UK, France, Russia, USA, Hong Kong, Argentina, China, India, Brazil and Canada. In the final week leading up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, 12 notebook PCs, one from each of the participating countries, will be auctioned to conclude the program. A total of 36 limited edition Lenovo notebook PCs will be auctioned around the world.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction will be distributed through the Lenovo Hope Fund to select philanthropies, including Right to Play. In the spirit of Lenovo's sponsorship of the Olympic Games, the program will concentrate on microfinance, small- and medium-enterprise development and bringing sports to communities of children.

"We are thrilled to offer fans the unique opportunity to own these one-of-a-kind Olympic torch themed notebook PCs," said Deepak Advani, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Lenovo. "Just as our technology helps bridge the physical gaps among different parts of the world, Lenovo's goal is to do the same through social investments. In the Olympic spirit of internationalism and cooperation, it is fitting that these Olympic torch-themed notebook PCs should benefit worthy causes."

The Lenovo Champions participating in the auction include:

-- Gail Emms, badminton, Great Britain, 2004 Olympic silver medalist

-- Libby Lenton, swimming, Australia, 2004 Olympic gold and bronze medalist

-- Eamon Sullivan, swimming, Australia, 2004 Olympian

-- Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, beach volleyball, United States, 2004 Olympic gold medalists

-- Adam van Koeverden, canoe/kayak, Canada, 2004 Olympic gold and bronze medalist

-- Liu Xiang, track and field, China, 2004 Olympic gold medalist

"In addition to being able to contribute to charities around the world this is such a unique opportunity for fans to own a piece of Olympic history," said Kerri Walsh.

The auction will live on a Lenovo micro-site - www.lenovohopefundauctions.com. Each bidder will be directed to a country specific listing where they will find additional information about the notebook PC and bidding process in their native language. Bidders will be pre-qualified to bid in US dollars through Kompolt, an on-line auction agency focused on creating successful high-value, high-profile promotional and charity auctions. Due to export restrictions and policies, the Olympic torch-themed notebook PCs may only be purchased for use in their designated country.

Like the "Cloud of Promise" on which the design is based, the notebook cover features striking swirls of silver against a pure red base color. Because computer configurations and ability to sell vary by market, Lenovo has added the Lenovo Olympic Torch-themed design to notebook PCs in the markets for which they are configured in order to create this global auction. The product for auction will be the Lenovo 3000 V200 notebook with the special Olympic Torch-themed cover. In China, the product being offered will be the Lenovo Tianyi F21 notebook with Olympic Torch-themed cover.

About the Lenovo Olympic Torch Notebook Design

Lenovo's award-winning design team spent more than 10 months on the design of the torch. Altogether, more than 30 Lenovo design specialists were involved in the torch project. The team was truly multinational, including designers from Germany, Singapore, US, Japan, New Zealand, Italy and China. For its winning torch design, the Lenovo Innovation Design Center group employed a number of innovative materials and techniques, from precision-machining an aluminum-magnesium alloy into the scroll-shaped curves of the torch body, to using rubberized paint for the first time ever in an Olympic torch to provide the sensation of one hand gripping another. Like the "Cloud of Promise," on which the design is based, the notebooks are characterized by striking swirls of regal red against a pure silver base color, a contrast representative of the traditional Chinese concern for balance and harmony.

    About the Lenovo Hope Fund

The Lenovo Hope Fund is a donor-advised philanthropic fund created by Lenovo Group and managed through the Triangle Community Foundation. The mission of the Lenovo Hope Fund is to support the creation and growth of new businesses in distressed communities around the world, as well as innovative nonprofit organizations that serve these communities.

Nearly every aspect of the management of the Games, from gathering and storing participant data to displaying the scores to organizing all activities for BOCOG, depends on hardware provided by Lenovo.
