    Ondertussen begint in Rusland, waar Poetin nergens te bekennen is, de sfeer van het Ceausescu-balkon lijkt eraan te komen .

    Vandaag zonden de Russische staatsmedia opmerkingen van Poetin uit, maar het interview leek te zijn opgenomen vóór de afgebroken Wagner-opstand gisteren.

    Lawrence Krubner: "I can think of only one theory that explains the Prigozhin mutiny: there is a powerful faction in the FSB that wanted to extract a concession from Putin. Possibly this is the same faction that has been protecting Prigozhin for the last few months, as he publicly feuded with the Russian military. Girkin has repeatedly said that some part of the elite apparatus was protecting Prigozhin. (It’s even possible this faction shares members with the faction that helped bring Putin to power in 1999.) This faction protected Prigozhin and then asked him to launch his mutiny, to put pressure on Putin. And then, during the crisis, Putin agreed to give this faction what it wanted. At which point this faction asked Prigozhin to stop his attack and go to Belarus, for what will probably be a temporary exile. And Prigozhin agreed to go because he is in debt to this faction, and he trusts them to keep him safe, and also he expects to be recalled soon, so his time in exile should be short. This faction in the FSB does not want to see a civil war in Russia but they would like to regain some of the control they used to have over Putin, back in the early days, before Putin was able to establish his own political base."

    The “big loser” of the armed rebellion was Russia’s long-serving Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, according to an analyst.

    Shoigu has long been seen not just as a political ally of President Vladimir Putin but one of the Kremlin chief’s few friends within the Russian elite. They have sun-bathed bare-chested together in remote Siberia, shared fishing holidays and played on the same ice hockey team.

    But their friendship and Shoigu’s decades-long political career now face their biggest test after the revolt led by Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who had lambasted the defence minister’s handling of the invasion of Ukraine.

    Putin appears to have for now survived the revolt after a surprise mediation led by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, AFP reports. But Shoigu’s position remains deeply precarious due to the unprecedented severity of the attacks by Prigozhin against him and his ministry.

    “The big winner of the night was Lukashenko,” said Arnaud Dubien, director of the Franco-Russian Observatory think tank. “The big loser was Shoigu.”

    The UK must prepare for a “deeply dangerous and unpredictable” post-Vladimir Putin Russia, a security expert has warned after the Russian president’s authority was weakened by an attempted rebellion.

    Edward Lucas, a senior adviser at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, told BBC Radio 4’s The World This Weekend: “We’ve made very little preparation in this country and done very little thinking about post-Putin Russia.

    “There will be all sorts of dilemmas and difficulties we face and we need to start thinking right now about how we deal with them.

    “And that’s everything from do we worry about Russia falling into the arms of China? Is there going to be disintegration? Will it go full on fascist? Will we have a long period of confusion and chaos? Will they use their nuclear weapons as a bargaining chip to try and get things?

    “And these are all the questions that we ought to be dealing with and I’m just not seeing it in most western capitals.

    “We face perhaps a decade or more of dealing with a deeply dangerous and unpredictable Russia without even the sort of superficial certainty we have of having Putin in power.”

    Russia’s foreign ministry says China has expressed its support for the leadership in Moscow as Vladimir Putin attempts to stabilise his country following the aborted mutiny by the Wagner group of mercenaries on Saturday.

    As Reuters reports, Russia’s deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko held a meeting with China’s foreign minister Qin Gang after flying to Beijing for talks on “international” issues.

    Benieuwd hoe lang China Rusland nog blijft 'steunen'.

    Hier valt namelijk voor hun niks meer te halen / winnen ... maar wel steeds meer te verliezen!

    Een te nauwe band / associatie met Putin zal voor XI -bij een implosie van Rusland- mogelijk veel reputatieschade op gaan leveren (zowel in binnen- als buitenland). De Chinese staatsmedia heeft namelijk tot nu toe alleen maar Putin & Rusland op zitten te hemelen (met Russische leugens, omtrent de voortgang van de oorlog) ... het is dus wachten op de 180graden U-turn (net zoals bij covid) om gezichtsverlies te voorkomen of iig te beperken.

    Ergens las ik dat een van de scenario's was dat op verzoek van Poetin China het Russische leger te hulp was geschoten en dat Rusland daarna de facto een vazalstaat van China zou zijn geworden.
    Dit is overigens een optie die nog steeds mogelijk is, al zal dit niet meer dit weekend zijn.

    Wat als de hele Prigozhin show allemaal is bedacht door een paar FSB officieren of door Poetin himself. Uiteindelijk zit de Wagner groep nu op 100 km afstand van Kiev dat had niemand durven voorspellen.

    Noodgedwongen moet Kiev nu extra legereenheden die kant op verplaatsen om, mocht Wagner de opdracht krijgen om Kiev aan te vallen, deze bij de grens tegen te houden.

    Waarop pal bij de grens bij Ukraine ipv lekker in een villa in Minsk, ik heb er geen goed gevoel over.

    GULAGU NET heeft een lijst gepubliceerd van de eenheden van de Nationale Garde, de Federale Veiligheidsdienst en het Ministerie van Defensie van de Russische Federatie die geheel of gedeeltelijk naar de zijde van Prigozhin zijn overgegaan.

    Er werd ook een beschrijving gegeven van wat is er gebeurd :

    Deze bijzondere operatie werd gedurende meer dan acht maanden voorbereid en ontwikkeld.

    Surovikin en Alexeyev wisten het niet alleen, maar waren er ook bij betrokken en gaven enkele commandanten mondeling de opdracht geen gewapend verzet te bieden.

    Daarom werden ze met spoed onder controle genomen en gedwongen een op video opgenomen oproep aan Prigozhin te doen.

    Later, toen hij het hoofdkwartier van het zuidelijke militaire district van het Ministerie van Defensie overnam, sprak Alexeyev een belangrijke zin uit op de eis van Prigozhin om hun chef van de generale staf Gerasimov te geven : "Ja, haal hem weg". Ze waren bereid hun commandant (overste officieren) over te dragen aan de rebellen.

    Dit is een feit van verraad, een beslissing die op het punt staat te worden genomen.

    Bij deze speciale operatie waren voormalige commandanten en strijders van de Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, 2e en 15e GRU-brigades van Wagner PMC (onder bevel van Utkin) betrokken, die eerder hadden deelgenomen aan speciale operaties op het grondgebied van buitenlandse landen, voornamelijk om douaneposten, communicatiepunten, lokale legereenheden en strategische wapens in te nemen.

    Formeel was Yevgeny Prigozhin zelf op het hoofdkwartier van het zuidelijke militaire district van het Ministerie van Defensie, en verhuisde niet fysiek van daar, voerde gesprekken met de vice-minister van Defensie en gaf opdracht om iets vast te houden of gevangen te nemen, in tegenstelling tot Utkin, Kuznetsov en andere Wagner- PMC. commandanten, en noch Poetin, noch Peskov beloofden hen immuniteit en niet-vervolging.

    Tegen het einde van het jaar zullen ze worden vastgehouden of geliquideerd.

    Japanese company brings expertise to clear land mines

    The current Nikken mine-clearing machine is modified from an excavator. It can cut down trees with a saw attached to the arm and clear debris, including fallen trees and unexploded ordnances, with a claw. Finally, the saw digs up the ground, detonating any mines in the process.

    The machine performs the work slowly to make sure all explosives are located. The cabin windshield is made with two layers of 33 millimeter-thick bulletproof glass. The body and the arm of the equipment is reinforced with steel.

    Because the machine revolves like an excavator, the work is efficient. After the machine completes the task, a minesweeper operated by a person is used to check for any missed ordnance.

    Nikken is helping to fulfill a promise made by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida when he visited Kyiv in March.

    "We will assist Ukraine in various fields, including electricity, land mine clearance and agriculture," Kishida said at a news conference standing next to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

    The Ukrainian side had already begun preparing. On Jan. 24, nine personnel in charge of explosive countermeasures from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) made a trip to Japan to visit a facility in Hokuto, Yamanashi prefecture, where they could observe and test Nikken equipment to remove mines.

    Russian mines and unexploded ordnances are said to affect about a third of Ukraine's territory -- approximately 174,000 sq. kilometers. According to the Japan International Cooperation Agency, 13 SESU workers have died and 51 have been injured in mine clearance operations.

    Many European demining machines are bulldozers equipped with flail hammers attached to chains, that crush land mines in the ground as a rotating drum spins them at high speed. In Ukraine, however, tank wreckage, unexploded ordnance, debris and short, dense trees and shrubs hinder their effectiveness.

    "No local surveys have been performed, so we will build one machine based on information told to us by SESU staff, then make improvements as it operates in Ukraine," said Makoto Amemiya.
