    27 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Rolls-Royce has commissioned its first in-house test stand for mtu hydrogen engines at its Augsburg site marking another milestone on the road to climate-neutral products for energy supply. Over the past year and a half, the company has invested around ten million euros at Rolls-Royce Solutions in Augsburg in test bench modernization, hydrogen infrastructure and other measures as part of its ‘Net Zero at Power Systems’ climate protection program.

Rolls-Royce had announced in 2021, as part of its ‘Net Zero at Power Systems’ sustainability program that it would realign its product portfolio so that by 2030, sustainable fuels and new mtu technologies can achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 35 percent compared to 2019. The company is now already successfully operating an mtu fuel cell system, has released its power generation gensets for sustainable fuels such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oils), and is developing electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen. The mtu gas engine portfolio is being prepared for hydrogen as a fuel, thus enabling a climate-neutral energy supply.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is headquartered in Friedrichshafen in southern Germany and employs around 9,000 people. The product portfolio includes mtu-brand high-speed engines and propulsion systems for ships, power generation, heavy land, rail and defence vehicles and for the oil and gas industry as well as diesel and gas systems and battery containers for mission critical, standby and continuous power, combined generation of heat and power, and microgrids and is intensively engaged in the development of climate-neutral solutions.

Peugeot Hydrogen Fuel Cell Van E Expert Hydrogen Available

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    27 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Peugeot hydrogen fuel cell van E Expert Hydrogen is now available. Its powertrain is identical to the Peugeot E-Expert BEV, but instead of having the big 75 kWh battery, it instead has a smaller 10.5 kWh pack and tanks located in the floor of the vehicle capable of storing 4.4 kg of hydrogen under pressure. With a full load of hydrogen, the E-Expert FCV has a claimed WLTP range of 400 km, more than the E-Expert BEV whose range is 340 km. Refuelling the vehicle takes around 3 minutes, but you can also just charge the battery at up to 11 kW thanks to an on-board charger.

The very first production hydrogen vehicle from PEUGEOT left the production line on 13December 2021 with MICHELIN group the first customer of the revolutionary new PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen. With the e-EXPERT Hydrogen, PEUGEOT has become one of the very first manufacturers to offer, in addition to its combustion and battery electric variants, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in the commercial vehicle segment.

The PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen van integrates a new hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrain in the engine compartment and underbody, resulting in no compromise in terms of load volume compared to the diesel variants of the EXPERT, and a low centre of gravity, improving vehicle stability and safety.

Based on the battery powered e-EXPERT, the PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen is now available for deliveries, with the first customer, WATEA by MICHELIN, the young subsidiary dedicated to green mobility solutions in the MICHELIN group, receiving its hydrogen van before the end of the year.

IRENA Expects Quarter of Global Hydrogen for Trading by 2050

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    27 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

A new report series released by the International Renewable Energy Agency sees hydrogen trade significantly contributing to a more diversified and resilient energy system. IRENA said “Global hydrogen trade to meet the 1.5 degree Celcius climate goal’ shows the importance of the future hydrogen trade. Trade allows countries to tap into affordable hydrogen as the scale of projects progresses and technology matures. One quarter of the global hydrogen demand could be satisfied by international trade through pipelines and ships. With falling costs of renewables and the hydrogen potential exceeding global energy demand by 20-fold, three-quarters of global hydrogen would still be produced and used locally in 2050. This is a significant change from today’s oil market where the bulk is internationally traded.”

IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook sees hydrogen covering 12% of global energy demand and cutting 10 per cent of CO2 emissions by 2050. Yet, hydrogen can only be a viable climate solution if the power needed to produce it comes in addition to the electrification of the energy system, placing an even greater uptake of renewable power at the heart of the transition.

The new reports see half of the hydrogen being traded through largely existing, repurposed gas pipelines drastically reducing the costs of transport. Shipping of green ammonia would account for most of the other half, largely intercontinental hydrogen trade.

As hydrogen becomes an increasingly internationally traded commodity, the hydrogen sector will attract growing sums of investment. Satisfying the global demand requires investment of almost USD 4 trillion by 2050. Net zero-aligned finance instruments will have to leverage the investment needed.

    28 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Saint John New Brunswick US headquartered Irving Oil has announced plans to expand its hydrogen capacity at the Saint John refinery, with the goal of offering hydrogen fuelling infrastructure in Atlantic Canada, making the company the first to introduce hydrogen to the regional market. In formalizing an agreement to purchase a hydrogen electrolyzer, Irving Oil will be the first oil refinery in Canada, and one of the first in North America, to make such an investment in this type of clean energy solution.

The company’s initial investment in a 5-megawatt electrolyzer, developed by New York hydrogen technology company Plug Power, is expected to be fully operational by late 2023, and will play a significant role in exploring further hydrogen production to drive emission reductions at the Saint John refinery, as well as clean energy solutions for downstream customers. Once fully operational, the electrolyzer will produce 2 tonnes of hydrogen per day – the equivalent to fuelling 60 buses with hydrogen.

Irving Oil Saint John Refinery is the largest producer of hydrogen in Atlantic Canada and one of the largest producers in Canada generating more than 200 tonnes of hydrogen per day, which is used to lower the sulphur content of petroleum products at the refinery. While currently, hydrogen at the facility is produced with natural gas, the hydrogen electrolyzer will create hydrogen using electricity from the local electricity grid.

Waterstof als poeder opslaan voor eenvoudig transport
    admin - 29 jul. 2022

    Hoe duur is waterstofpoeder?

    Published on :
    1 Aug, 2.022, 5:30 am

The Port of Valencia has begun the installation of the hydrogen generator with the assembly on the north quay in the Bracet de la Xità area, of the tank and compressor of the station that will supply hydrogen to the machinery that forms part of the H2Ports project. A further step in this pioneering initiative which will be completed in the next few days with the arrival of the mobile unit with the dispenser to position the Port of Valencia as the first European site to use hydrogen technologies to reduce its environmental impact.

The hydrogen station will supply the fuel necessary to guarantee the continuous working cycles of the equipment forming part of the H2Ports project. One of the pieces of equipment, currently in the construction phase, will be the machinery or prototype of the Reach Stacker vehicle or container stacker which will be powered by this energy and which will be tested at MSC Terminal Valencia. The other piece of equipment will be an adaptation of a conventional 4×4 tractor unit, which will have a fuel cell adapted for testing in loading and unloading operations at Valencia Terminal Europa of the Grimaldi Group.

The hydrogen supply station HRS has been designed and built by the National Hydrogen Centre, and will include a fixed part that will be dedicated to the reception, storage and compression of hydrogen up to delivery pressure, both already installed at the Bracet de la Xità, and a mobile part that will store the compressed hydrogen and will include a hydrogen dispenser for refuelling the port machinery. The HRS will have a two-stage water-cooled piston hydrogen compressor with heat exchangers integrated into the system, two groups of hydrogen storage cylinders at 300 and 450 bar and a dispenser at 350 bar for heavy vehicles.

Carburos Metálicos is leading the installation of the hydrogen plant in the Port of Valencia and will manage it during a pilot period of two years, thus guaranteeing the good practices of the equipment involved and the correct handling of the hydrogen loading operations. Likewise, Carburos Metálicos will supply the renewable hydrogen and will develop the necessary logistics for the supply of the port machinery.

The European project which will enable Valencia and its port to work and move port machinery with hydrogen is called “H2PORTS – Implementing Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies in Ports”. It is an initiative coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation in close collaboration with the Port Authority, and is financed by the Clean Hydrogen JU programme of the European Union. Its main objective is to test and validate hydrogen technologies on port machinery that will provide applicable and real solutions without affecting the performance and safety of port operations and producing zero local emissions.

The H2Ports project will involve a total investment of more than 4 million euros and involves, in addition to the Valenciaport Foundation and the Port Authority of Valencia, the research centres Centro Nacional del Hidrógeno and Atena Distretto Alta Tecnologia Energia Ambiente and the private companies MSC Terminal Valencia, Grimaldi Group, Hyster-Yale, Ballard Power Systems Europe, Carburos Metálicos and Enagás.

Mattijn Nederend - 2 uur geleden

DRIFT Energy Produces Green Hydrogen with Hydrofoil Sailboat

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    2 Aug, 2.022, 5:30 am

DRIFT Energy has successfully produced green hydrogen gas using its first purpose-built hydrofoil sailboat in sea trials. The sea trials of these ground-breaking energy yachts took place off the coast of Brightlingsea, Essex earlier this month. The trials managed to produce approximately six liters of green hydrogen over a two hour test run. The trial was so successful that the energy yacht outperformed expectations and could have produced over ten times more of the green renewable gas. DRIFT, having proven the concept are progressing plans for vessels capable of 250,000 liters per hour or more.

DRIFT Energy’s business is pioneering this type of energy yacht design, but the secret ingredient is in using the power of data to find ptimal weather conditions in which to route the vessels when at sea. This routing algorithm is critical to DRIFT’s operations and unlocks a unique advantage over other renewable classes, by making green energy mobile. Artificial intelligence firm Faculty found that a flotilla of DRIFT’s energy yachts, operating from Penzance, could achieve a load factor of 72.5%. By comparison verified load factors for wind turbines in the UK are 26.5% for onshore wind farms and 39.9% for offshore wind farms. Faculty’s research into wind speeds across the North Atlantic indicates a load factor of 77% could be achieved off the coast of New York and, at some locations in the mid-Atlanti load factors of 82% could be attained. Faculty was asked by DRIFT to develop a routing algorithm that can continually optimize the course of the vessels to maintain the highest possible utilization of the ship.

DRIFT’s boats will sail the ocean, which has wind speeds, wind orientations and wave heights that vary by the hour. Given a forecast of the environmental conditions, the task was to determine how far the rate of energy generation can be optimized over a specific time window. In optimizing the route, rather than just look at the next best move the boat could make, Faculty's algorithm looks several time-steps ahead so that it can take a more strategic approach to where the best winds will be – just like a chess player viewing a board.

The next phase of the work may look at issues such as the positioning of offshore docks, energy potentials in other oceans such as the Pacific and the impact of climate change to routing behaviour.

To benefit from the load factors uncovered, DRIFT intends to conduct further sea trials, and increase the number of boats available to generate energy.

DRIFT’s energy yacht was built by the White Formula of Brightlingsea, a third generation boatbuilder with Olympic gold medal winning heritage.

In Nederland staan ongeveer 189 datacenters.

Powerhouse Energy Group has agreed on a heads of terms with Hydrogen Utopia International for a proposed joint development of a site at Lanespark in Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. HUI and Powerhouse have agreed, in principle, to establish a joint venture vehicle owned equally by each company to which PHE and HUI would contribute development costs for the Lanespark Project on 50:50 basis.

It is anticipated the Lanespark Project would, if developed, lead to PHE’s first operational full scale waste plastic to hydrogen facility outside of the UK.

Powerhouse also continues to support and be the technology provider to Peel NRE nd its SPV at Protos Strategic Energy & Resource Park in Cheshire in UK.
