    VS: Russische opschorting START-verdrag onverantwoordelijk

    WASHINGTON/BRUSSEL (ANP/RTR/AFP) - De Amerikaanse buitenlandminister Antony Blinken noemt de Russische opschorting van het ontwapeningsverdrag START "zeer ongelukkig en onverantwoordelijk". De Verenigde Staten blijven volgens hem bereid om met Moskou te praten over wapenbeheersing.

    De Amerikanen en Russen gingen in 2010 met het zogeheten nieuwe START-verdrag akkoord met een maximumaantal van 1550 kernkoppen per land. De VS gaan nauwlettend in de gaten houden wat Rusland doet en zullen zich blijven inzetten voor de veiligheid van hun eigen grondgebied en dat van hun bondgenoten, aldus Blinken.

    De Russische president Vladimir Poetin zei in een speech dat Rusland het verdrag opschort, maar niet opzegt. Moskou houdt al langer de afgesproken inspecties tegen. NAVO-chef Jens Stoltenberg zegt de opschorting te betreuren en roept Moskou op het besluit te heroverwegen. Ook zegt hij dat Poetin de oorlog in Oekraïne is begonnen en dat hij degene is die het conflict laat escaleren. Poetin wees in zijn toespraak het Westen en Oekraïne aan als schuldigen.

    Daarnaast maakt Stoltenberg zich naar eigen zeggen in toenemende mate zorgen dat China Rusland mogelijk in de toekomst wapens levert voor de oorlog in Oekraïne. Blinken kwam eerder met vergelijkbare uitspraken. China heeft vanwege de beweringen van de minister weersproken dat het wapens aan Rusland wil leveren.

    Today Putin repeated his standard speech of blaming West, Ukraine, neoNazis. He didn't announce new mobilization, didn't call the "special military operation" - war.

    His claims that West, NATO, Ukraine were going to attack Russia - obvious and blatant lies aimed at his population.

    Large part of his speech was devoted to sanctions not working and Russian economic successes - obviously not true & noticed by his population.

    Putin lost initiative a long time ago. Kyiv is the place of power today. Kyiv together with our Allies protects the world.

    Navalni: Rusland heeft jaar na invasie dieptepunt bereikt

    MOSKOU (ANP/RTR) - Rusland heeft een jaar na de invasie in Oekraïne volgens de Kremlincriticus Aleksej Navalni een dieptepunt bereikt. De dissident schrijft vanuit zijn cel dat Rusland er pas weer bovenop kan komen als de "Poetin-dictatuur" ontmanteld is en Oekraïne gecompenseerd wordt voor alle schade die de troepen daar hebben aangericht.

    In de ogen van Navalni is president Vladimir Poetin bezig Ruslands toekomst te vernietigen, puur voor zijn eigen gewin. De echte redenen voor deze oorlog zouden de politieke en economische problemen in Rusland zijn. De oppositiepoliticus wijst op "Poetins verlangen om de macht tegen elke prijs vast te houden en zijn obsessie met zijn eigen historische nalatenschap". Een verlies in Oekraïne lijkt Navalni onvermijdelijk.

    Bovendien beschuldigt Navalni het Russische leger van het plegen van oorlogsmisdaden. "Tienduizenden onschuldige Oekraïners zijn vermoord en nog eens miljoenen lijden." Hij wil dat er een internationaal onderzoek komt om de misdaden te beoordelen.

    Navalni heeft er inmiddels 2 van de 11,5 jaar gevangenisstraf opzitten. Hij blijft zich via sociale media uitspreken tegen Poetin en het Kremlin, maar wordt ook regelmatig in isoleercellen geplaatst. Hij mag momenteel naar verluidt een aantal maanden geen bezoek ontvangen.

    As the whole world watches Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine, the Kremlin is quietly absorbing neighboring Belarus into its orbit.

    Russia’s encroachment on Belarus may, however, be the result of a meticulously composed plan.

    A group of European and U.S. media outlets, including the Kyiv Independent, has obtained a 17-page document allegedly detailing Russia’s plans to subjugate Belarus and dismantle its independence.

    The document details Russia's future steps to take full control of Belarusian political, economic, and military spheres by the end of the decade.

    According to the document, by 2030, Belarus should have a single currency and tax system with Russia, and its media space must be under Russian control. The Belarusian army must comply with Russian regulations. All key military production must be transferred from Belarus to Russia.

    The Kyiv Independent is not publishing the document itself, so it cannot be traced back to the source.

    Russia plans Belarus 'absorption' by 2030 — media reports

    A Russian presidential document was obtained by a group of international journalists who believe it to be authentic. It reportedly dates back to the summer of 2021.

    Russia is planning to absorb neighboring Belarus by 2030, according to a document allegedly leaked from Russia's presidential administration.

    The document was obtained and reported on by an international consortium of journalists from news organizations including Yahoo News and Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung.

    The document, which reportedly dates back to the summer of 2021, sets out a plan to infiltrate Belarus politically, economically and militarily. Plans are set out on different stages: short-term or until 2022, medium-term or until 2025 and long-term, meaning 2030.

    The long-term plan translates into the formation of a common "union state" under Russian leadership.

    Both countries are already formally part of a so-called "union state," as per a 1999 agreement. The agreement sets a legal basis for integration between the two countries.

    However, media outlets which obtained the document in question suggest Russia's plans are more about annexing Belarus by 2030.

    A leaked internal strategy document from Vladimir Putin’s executive office and obtained by Yahoo News lays out a detailed plan on how Russia plans to take full control over neighboring Belarus in the next decade under the pretext of a merger between the two countries. The document outlines in granular detail a creeping annexation by political, economic and military means of an independent but illiberal European nation by Russia, which is an active state of war in its bid to conquer Ukraine through overwhelming force.

    “Russia’s goals with regards to Belarus are the same as with Ukraine,” Michael Carpenter, the U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, told Yahoo News. “Only in Belarus, it relies on coercion rather than war. Its end goal is still wholesale incorporation.”
