China iron ore imports jump to record on winter stockpiling

China, the world’s largest buyer of iron ore, increased imports of the steelmaking ingredient to a record in November as traders replenished stockpiles.

Imports totaled 77.84 million tonnes last monthup from 67.83 million tonnes in October and 65.78 million tonnes a year earlier. Cumulative shipments in the first 11 months jumped 10.9% to 746.1 million tonnes.

Mr Andrew Harding iron ore CEO at Rio Tinto Group said that “Iron ore entered a bull market in July as users in China increased stockpiles that shrank in March to the lowest level since 2009. The market’s supply and demand outlook is positive as producers globally struggle to deliver larger volumes and demand in China continues to grow strongly.”

Mr Wu Wenzhang head of research at Shanghai Steelhome Information Technology Company “Winter stockpiling looks to be undergoing strongly.”

Czech Prime Minister visits ArcelorMittal Ostrava for commissioning ceremony

ArcelorMittal Ostrava has officially commissioned its continuous casting facility, with the Czech Prime Minister Jirí Rusnok today attending a formal ceremony to mark the occasion. The US$53m investment will improve the quality of steel and billets produced for industries including the oil and gas sector.

Attendees at the ceremony got a chance to watch the first casting of the hot steel being continuously cast into billets.

“Today, we have made a big leap towards improving the competitiveness of this company. The billion crowns of investment has enabled us to make steel of a better quality and purity,“ said Tapas Rajderkar, CEO and chairman of the board of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

The modernisation will enable ArcelorMittal Ostrava to cast round billets with a diameter of up to 400mm compared with the current diameter of 210mm. The new formats will be used for the manufacture of high quality products, in particular seamless pipes for the oil and gas industry. The billets made in the revamped continuous casting facility will also be used for the manufacture of parts for wind power plants and railway wheels, leaf springs for the automotive industry and ring rolling for heavy machinery.

Part of the new technology includes a vacuum degasser which is equipped with a fabric filter with 99% efficiency. The newly built production facilities meet the requirements for the best available techniques (BAT).

ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is the largest steelmaker in the Czech Republic and part of the world’s largest steel and mining group, ArcelorMittal. It has an annual production capacity of 3 million tonnes of steel. Besides the Czech market, the company sells its products to more than 40 countries around the world. ArcelorMittal Ostrava and its subsidiaries employ more than 7500 people. Average income of its employees amounted to 34,213 CZK in 2012. ArcelorMittal Ostrava produces iron and steel in compliance with all environmental legislation. It already conforms to the EU best available techniques (BAT) emission limits that will come into force in 2016. The sole shareholder is ArcelorMittal Holdings A.G.

Value Investors Find Bargains in U.S. Steel and Gerdau

Find out if (MT) is in Cramer's Portfolio.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- When the economic environment turns hostile, steel companies such as U.S. Steel(X_), Gerdau SA(GGB_), AK Steel(AKS_) and ArcelorMittal(MT_) are always early casualties. But that also means these companies can become very attractive to value investors when bullish signs pop up again. The recent strong export reports for both the United States and China should have investors looking for bargains in the steel sector.

As detailed in a recent piece, China increased both exports and imports in November. Exports increased by 12.7%, according to the General Administration of Customs, topping estimates from analysts. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that American exports were the highest ever recorded for October. Imports rose for the United States in October, too.

Both the world's largest and second largest economies are importing and exporting more -- unmistakable signs that conditions are improving in many sectors.

That is certainly the case in the steel industry. For the first three quarters of 2013, world steel production increased by 2.7% from 2012, which was a record year. Despite the improving outlook, the steel sector remains fragmented and undervalued. Utilization rates have declined to around 80%.

These conditions create opportunities for long-term value investors.

ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel company, is trading at a price-to-book ratio of 0.63 and a price-to-sales ratio of 0.39. That means that ArcelorMittal's assets are valued at a more than a one-third discount to the stock price. Sales are going for almost a two-thirds discount on the same basis.

It is much the same story with Gerdau SA, AK Steel and U.S. Steel.

From its headquarters in Brazil, Gerdau SA has become the leading long steel maker in the world. Gerdau SA has a price-to-sales ratio of 0.83. The forward price-to-earnings ratio is under 11. At around eight times forward earnings, it is quite attractive to value hunters.

Although U.S. Steel's glory days are long gone, value investors should like the price-to-sales ratio of just 0.22. The company was downgraded twice in October. But the share price has increased more than 34% for the last quarter of trading. The analyst consensus is that earnings per share will increase by more than 184% over the next year. Investors seem to be finding the analyst predictions more significant than the downgrades are.

Rival AK Steel operates seven steelmaking facilities in the United States. The largest market for steel products in the U.S. is the automotive industry, which has been improving. As the auto market represents about one-third of the business for AK Steel, the bullish outlook for American-built cars and trucks is certainly a positive. AK Steel also just raised prices for stainless steel, another favorable development.

ArcelorMittal SA CEO Ms Nyembezi-Heita to step down next year

ARCELORMITTAL South Africa has announced the resignation of CEO Ms Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita, effective from February 18 next year. She has been at the helm of the country’s primary steel maker for the past six years, and has steered it through difficult times.

The South African unit of the Luxembourg based steel group, along with its parent company, has been struggling in weak and highly volatile global and domestic steel markets brought on by the financial crisis of late 2008.

No reasons were given for Ms Nyembezi-Heita’s decision. Her successor would be announced in due course, the company said. The group also said on Monday that she would not conduct interviews about the announcement.

Ms Nyembezi-Heita has guided the company through an acutely difficult period for South Africa’s construction sector, which fell into a rapid and deep slump after the 2010 Soccer World Cup ended. Construction accounts for the biggest part of steel consumption in South Africa.

Chairman Mpho Makwana thanked Ms Nyembezi-Heita for her "tremendous contribution" during an "exceptionally challenging period", not only for the company, but the steel industry in general.

Spot iron ore steady into top on China winter stockpiling

Reuters reported that spot iron ore held near its highest level since mid August, reflecting sustained buying interest among Chinese steel producers building stockpiles as colder weather curbs domestic mining.

But rising inventories of imported iron ore at Chinese ports suggest consumption and resale of the raw material has been slow which could eventually limit the buying appetite.

Traders said that iron ore for immediate delivery into top market China to USD 139.40 per tonne just shy of the USD 139.70 level reached last week, which was the highest since August 15.

A Shanghai based iron ore trader said that winter stockpiling is continuing, but this time we have not seen very huge volumes being purchased by mills. Stockpiles at ports have also been continuously increasing and this shows that the rise in iron ore prices may not last long.

A 100,000 tonne cargo of Australian iron ore was sold on globalORE platform at a price based on the December average of Platts 62% grade plus USD 2.50, or at just over USD 140 per tonne. Still, despite holding up above USD 135 since November, benchmark iron ore prices have stayed below USD 140 because there is no shortage in supply to meet Chinese demand.

China's iron ore imports jumped to a record 77.8 million tonnes in November, also reflecting expanded output by miners in Australia, the world's biggest supplier of the commodity. Iron ore inventories at major Chinese ports rose another 1.2 million tonnes to 88.7 million tonnes last week.

Spot iron ore prices gained 3.4% in November while Shanghai steel futures rose less than 1% for the month. The most traded rebar for May delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange was nearly flat at CNY 3,720 per tonne by midday, after initially touching an 11 week peak of CNY 3,737.

    Groeten terug !

    Meneer of mevrouw Voda/Hans,

Graag uitleggen hier svp.

    Amerikaans begrotingstekort slinkt
