    Hoe actueel is overname TomTom ?

    Not navigation manufacturer TomTom, but American mapmaker Waze is now probably taken over by Facebook. That the spraakloze Waze cards on his site building and possible $ 800 million to $ 1 billion for down.

    TomTom seems even more marginalised. Rabobank estimated earlier the acquisition opportunity by TomTom by Apple at 30%. Waze came like TomTom in the visor at Apple, which had major problems with its navigational charts.

    The smartphone producer, who has been with the Dutch AND worked together, according to market sources also looks to navigation site Foursquare. Software giant Microsoft Bing search site is also seeking $ 22 billion in sales in the market. But Facebook does not want to depend on the maps of such competitors.

    Begin dit jaar presenteerden we 10 businessvoorspellingen voor 2013. Hoogste tijd om de balans op te maken: wat kwam uit en wat niet?
    Op 2 januari publiceerden we de 10 voorspellingen voor 2013. Hadden we gelijk, of zaten we er compleet naast? Alvast ter verdediging (ja, zo zijn we): ook analisten zitten er heel af en toe naast, daarnaast zijn voorspellingen overgewaardeerd, zo zei managementgoeroe Peter Drucker al. Pak er dus een klein korreltje zout bij, terwijl we de voorspellingen puntsgewijs doornemen.

    7. TomTom van de beurs
    Wat we voorspelden: De beursnotering van TomTom zou ten einde lopen. Zelfs over een mogelijke overname door Apple werd gefluisterd. In elk geval zou het bedrijf zich ontwikkelen tot b2b-bedrijf, en veel minder doen in consumentenelektronica, zo voorspelden we.

    Wat er gebeurde: Het was eigenlijk een rustig jaar rondom TomTom. Misschien wel iets te rustig. De koers deed het goed, met een plus van ruim 20%, er waren wat orders en samenwerkingen hier en daar (zoals die met de Verenigde Naties, om het verkeer in wereldsteden beter te laten stromen) en er waren kwartaalomzetten die zelden tot lachen, maar ook zeker niet tot huilen stemden. Maar nieuws over een exit was er niet, noch een overname.
    En ook die andere voorspelling van ons van begin dit jaar, dat TomTom een b2b-bedrijf zou worden, houdt eigenlijk geen stand. Weliswaar groeide de divisie Business Solutions meer dan behoorlijk, zelfs met dubbele cijfers, ook de consument wordt door TomTom zeker niet vergeten. Het bedrijf kwam dit jaar al met GPS-horloges voor hardlopers en zwemmers, en heeft voor 2014 aangekondigd met nieuwe producten voor sporters te komen. Of het genoeg is voor de groeicijfers van begin deze eeuw valt te betwijfelen, het blijkt in elk geval genoeg om beleggers weer wat vertrouwen te geven in de voormalige lieveling.

    "It bought 15 (!) companies this year. Apple has been criticized for not being aggressive on M&A. Seems like it got aggressive this year.
    • Of the companies it bought, it seems that at least 3 are mapping related.
    • One of them will help with search.
    • One of them could be used in Apple TV.

    This attempt to get Android into Audi vehicles follows Apple’s announcement of iOS in the Car back in June at the 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference. Their program involves a much larger slate of manufacturers with Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Ferrari, Chevy, Infiniti, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Acura, Opel and Jaguar all on board.

Infotainment technology has come along so quickly in recent years that OEM systems soon fall way behind. To fix this situation many are turning toward dedicated technology firms like Microsoft, Apple and Google--and Audi is likely to announce a partnership with the latter at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

    According to The Wall Street Journal, Audi is likely to use Google's Android operating system as the basis for its in car entertainment, navigation and information systems. It would allow the driver and passenger to make use of many of the applications currently compatible with Android-powered smartphones, also ensuring the infotainment systems enjoy the regular updates and improvements that smartphone users are becoming accustomed to. The two companies are said to be working with other technology companies, including Nvidia, on the project.

    Google's Android joins several other systems from companies like Apple and Microsoft in the connected car market. Apple's 'iOS in the Car' was introduced last June, with Siri, iMessage and other services all expected to appear in cars using the service--with several automakers already signed up to feature Apple car software.

    Audi itself is rapidly expanding in-car technology, and it set to offer high-speed 4G LTE wireless broadband in the new 2015 Audi A3 sedan this Spring--seven times faster than current 3G connectivity. The high-speed broadband will allow fast streaming of detailed maps as part of the navigation system, as well as instant updates from social media accounts, a wireless LAN hotspot for all passengers and even HD video streaming, provided you aren't driving at the time.

    Ik vraag me af wat dit voor TomTom kan opleveren. Ik zie het eerder als een bedreiging. Het zal erop neer komen dat je je telefoon de "iOS in the Car" applicatie aanzet, en dat via bluetooth (of dockingstation?) ofzo dit wordt overgenomen op je scherm in de auto. Maar het levert voor TomTom veel meer op als ze de maps, hardware, software of traffic (liefst alles) rechtsstreeks aan een autofabrikant levert, ipv via Apple.

    Maar de grote vraag is wat autofabrikanten gaan doen met de compabiliteit van hun infotainmentsysteem voor 3 OS systemen, iOS, Android en Windows (phone) en straks zelfs 4 OS sytemen, Tizen komt er namelijk nog bij.

    Alleen iOS van Apple gebruikt gedeeltelijk de maps van TomTom, maar aan de licensing opbrengsten te zien betaald Apple niet alleen in harde Euro's, maar vooral in data voor TomTom's Traffic.
