   April 28 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. will see more swine flu cases, hospitalizations and deaths, and businesses and schools should plan for the possibility, the acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
   
   It’s too soon to say whether the outbreak will spark a pandemic, a global outbreak that spreads easily and causes serious illness, said Richard Besser, the Atlanta-based agency’s acting head, in an interview today. Still, businesses need to review plans and be ready to put them into effect, he said.
   
   Ernst & Young LLP, one of the so-called Big Four accounting firms, said today that an employee at its Times Square building in New York was diagnosed with swine flu on Sunday. The U.S. has confirmed 40 instances of the flu and no deaths, and expects more severe cases to be found, Besser said.
   
   “We’re in a pre-pandemic phase and it’s going to be hard to know until we’re much further along what this is going to progress to,” Besser said.
   
   Offices on the floor on which the sick Ernst & Young employee worked have been sealed, following CDC protocols, the company said in an e-mailed statement today. The female worker, who contracted the flu from a family member, hadn’t been in the office since Thursday, the company said.
   
   Laboratory tests have confirmed 73 cases of the flu worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization to raise its global alert to its highest ever level yesterday. The U.S. has investigators in Mexico, where as many as 152 people may have died from the illness, as part of an international investigation, Besser said.

   Vials of swine flu virus explode on train

   Vials of innocuous swine flu virus have exploded on an intercity train, prompting police to stop passengers before they arrived in Lausanne.
   
   A laboratory technician from a Geneva hospital had been transporting the vials on Monday evening from a veterinary institute in Zurich. The Federal Health Office had called for the development of a diagnostic test for the illness that has killed as many as 150 people worldwide.
   
   Near Fribourg the technician heard a muffled pop. Built-up gas from dry ice surrounding the vials had caused the package to explode.
   
   The carriage in which the technician was travelling held 61 passengers at the time. The Federal Railways did not learn of the incident until 40 minutes later after the train had already passed through Fribourg. Police then stopped the train near Lausanne, inspected passengers and wrote down their names as a precaution.

   'Aanhoudende onzekerheid funest voor reisbranche'

   ROTTERDAM (AFN) - De komende twee weken zal blijken of de uitbraak van varkensgriep grote gevolgen gaat hebben voor de economie. Belangrijk is dat duidelijk wordt hoe besmettelijk en gevaarlijk de ziekte is.
   
   Als de onzekerheid daarover aanhoudt, gaan mensen de komende tijd hun reizen zeker annuleren. Dit stelt hoogleraar consumentengedrag Stijn van Osselaer van de Rotterdam School of Management.
   
   Als de ziekte naar Nederland overwaait, gaan mensen veel minder op vakantie, verwacht Van Osselaer. ,,Mensen blijven dan liever dicht bij huis. Je ziet dat consumenten trips die ze anders wel hadden geboekt niet meer maken. Aan de andere kant zie je dat in dat soort situaties het internetwinkelen weer een hoge vlucht neemt.'' Een effect dat ook te zien was tijdens de uitbraak van de longziekte SARS in 2003.

   SARS leverde luchtvaartmaatschappij KLM dat jaar in drie maanden tijd een schadepost van 110 miljoen euro op, omdat mensen uit angst besmet te raken minder reislustig werden. De International Air Transport Association (IATA) maakte dinsdag in Genève bekend dat het internationale vliegverkeer in maart door de economische crisis met 11,1 procent was gedaald en waarschuwde dat de varkensgriep een extra negatieve impact kan hebben.
   
   Volgens Van Osselaer is het nu nog een beetje koffiedik kijken wat de effecten voor de economie zullen zijn. Cruciaal is dat de komende weken duidelijk wordt hoe erg het gaat worden, zegt hij. Als blijkt dat het allemaal meevalt en dat de ziekte goed te behandelen is, blijft de economische schade beperkt. Maar als de ziekte stevig naar Nederland komt, gaan er klappen vallen, denkt de hoogleraar.
   
   Niet minder belangrijk is een duidelijke communicatie over de ziekte. Van Osselaer: ,,Als je ziet dat eurocommissaris Androulla Vassiliou nu roept om ook maar niet meer naar de Verenigde Staten te reizen terwijl de Nederlandse overheid en de World Health Organization (WHO) geen negatief reisadvies afgeven voor de VS, is dat niet bevorderlijk voor de duidelijkheid.''

    Spammers als de kippen bij de varkensgriep
    BOSTON - Spammers zijn er als de kippen bij om een graantje mee te pikken van het varkensgriepvirus.

    Volgens virusbestrijder McAfee is spam over de varkensgriep inmiddels goed voor 3 tot 4 procent van alle wereldwijde spam.
    
    Sinds het weekend neemt de stroom emails met verwijzingen naar sites waar het middel tegen het virus te koop zouden zijn gestaag toe.
    
    Meestal zijn het nep-sites en is het de afzenders te doen om de creditcardgegevens van de geadresseerden. Of om ze neppillen aan te smeren.

    Gevreesde griep uit Mexico rukt op

    De Mexicaanse griep is dinsdag geconstateerd in Nieuw Zeeland, Israël en enkele andere landen. Mexico, waar het virus vorige maand uitbrak, is echter het enige land waar tot nu toe mensen zijn gestorven aan de infectie.
    
    Naast de twintig bevestigde slachtoffers in Mexico zijn er vermoedelijk nog eens ruim 130 Mexiacanen aan het H1N1-virus gestorven. Het aantal Mexicanen dat de ziekte onder leden heeft, wordt op minstens 1600 geschat.
    
    Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie
    
    De wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO verhoogde maandag al het alarmniveau voor het virus van fase drie naar fase vier, twee stappen verwijderd van het uitroepen van een wereldwijde pandemie.
    
    Volgens de Mexicaanse minister van gezondheid zijn alle slachtoffers in Mexico tussen de 20 en 50 jaar. Uit het verleden blijkt dat infecties onder jonge gezonde volwassenen karakteristiek zijn voor een pandemie.
    
    Hoewel de WHO bevestigt dat mensen elkaar kunnen besmetten, vindt de organisatie het nog niet nodig de grenzen te sluiten.
    
    Brussel
    
    De Europese commissaris van gezondheid Androulla Vassiliou ziet ook nog geen enkele zin in het beperken van reizen. De EU-ministers van gezondheid komen morgen bijeen, onder meer om over vaccinatie en een reisadvies te praten. In Brussel wordt weinig van dit overleg verwacht.
    
    Andere landen waar de griep intussen is geconstateerd, zijn de VS (44 gevallen), Canada (6 zeker en 10-12 vermoedelijke gevallen), Nieuw Zeeland (3 vastgesteld en 63 vermoedelijk), Groot-Brittannië (2 vastgesteld), Israël (2 vastgesteld) en Spanje (1 vastgesteld en 26 vermoedelijk).
    
    Australië is een van de landen waar de griep vermoedelijk is gesignaleerd. Ook in Chili, China, Colombia, Denemarken, Frankrijk, Hong Kong, Ierland, Singapore, Zuid-Korea, Zweden en Zwitserland zijn er mogelijk besmettingen. In Griekenland, Duitsland, Italië en Tsjechië liggen er patiënten ter observatie in ziekenhuizen en in Brazilië, Guatemala en Peru worden mensen getest op het virus. Ook in Nederland zijn zes testen gedaan, die allen negatief bleken.
    
    China, Indonesië, Libanon, Rusland, Thailand en Oekraïne hebben de import van varkens al verboden uit angst voor verspreiding van de griep. Een aantal landen in Azië, Latijns Amerika en Europa is op vliegvelden begonnen met het screenen van passagiers. Met warmtedetectoren wordt gezocht naar griepsymptomen.

    SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- Predicting the path of a swine flu outbreak is next to impossible, public health officials say. But Dr. Ira Longini has spent more than three decades trying to do just that.

    more photos » And Longini says the apparent new strain of swine flu appears to be here to stay. "We are probably going to have to live with this virus for some time," he told CNN.
    
    Longini specializes in the mathematical and statistical theory of epidemics. He works at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute at the Hutchinson Research Center in Seattle, Washington.
    
    The researcher studies simulations of hypothetical influenzas and how they would spread across the United States. For the moment, he said, there is not enough information about the swine flu that has sickened hundreds in Mexico and about 50 people in the United States to accurately forecast how the disease will travel.
    
    But Longini's simulations of a fictional killer flu that were ordered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show the importance of steps health officials can take to prevent further spread of the virus. These measures include "social distancing," or encouraging those sickened with the flu to stay home or seek medical treatment; closing places where groups of people gather; and making anti-flu medications available to large portions of the population.
    
    In the simulations, Longini said, these forms of containment reduce the sickness by nearly two-thirds.
    
    "The name of the game is to slow transmission until a well-matched vaccine can be made and distributed. I am fairly optimistic we can do that," he said. Watch how computer models simulate an outbreak's spread »
    
    So far, Longini said, it appears that everyone sickened by swine flu in the United States contracted the disease while traveling in Mexico, the apparent epicenter of the outbreak.
    
    But he cautioned: "That could change very fast. Obviously people in these communities could also get on airplanes and go other places or get on buses or cars or trucks and move around. The picture may change very rapidly. Basically, influenza is going to go where people go."
    
    "It is too soon for us to say what the spectrum is," Dr. Richard Besser, the acting director of the CDC, said Monday on Larry King Live. "We are going to see cases in this country that are more severe, individuals who are hospitalized, and I would not be surprised if we see deaths in this country."
    
    Longini said health officials are doing everything they can to mitigate how widely the swine flu spreads in the United States. Even if authorities examined everyone entering the country, Longini said, it would not solve the problem.
    
    "Through simulations and mathematical work we've shown that travel restrictions -- although potentially useful in slowing spread [of swine flu] -- they are not going to stop it," Longini said. "We can screen airline passengers, but there all those asymptomatic or incubating people we would miss. So you really have to deal with these outbreaks locally, everywhere they are occurring."     Longini said he hopes that as more data come in about the outbreak, it will help to answer questions researchers have about why the swine flu appears more deadly in the Mexico cases than the ones in the United States. Researchers also hope to find out why such a large percentage of fatalities in Mexico are young people whose healthy immune systems usually protect them from the flu.
    
    But there is good news, Longini said, at least temporarily, for populations in certain areas. In North America and Europe, summer will soon begin, ending the traditional flu season. Even outbreaks such as swine flu tend to follow standard flu season patterns, he said.
    
    Other parts of the world may not be so lucky.
    
    "Timing is terrible for people in the Southern Hemisphere -- places like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, parts of South America, "Longini said. "They are just coming into their flu season."
