    LTO: benaming Mexicaanse ‘varkensgriep’ is misplaatst
    De naam ‘varkensgriep’ die de gemoederen wereldwijd bezighoudt, is erg ongelukkig gekozen omdat het vrijwel zeker gaat om geheel nieuw humaan griepvirus en varkens geen rol spelen bij de verspreiding ervan. Dit zegt Klaas Johan Osinga van LTO Nederland, specialist op het gebied van besmettelijke dierziektes en de bestrijding ervan. Er zijn tot dusver ook geen aanwijzingen dat varkens of andere dieren drager kunnen zijn van dit nieuwe virus.

    ,,De Mexicaanse griep wordt ten onrechte ‘varkensgriep’ genoemd”, stelt Osinga. ,,Voor zover nu bekend lijkt het te gaan om een geheel nieuw humaan griepvirus bestaande uit delen van varkens-, vogel- en humaan griepvirus.” Het is erg voorbarig om te kunnen zeggen dat dit nieuwe virus bij varkens vandaan komt, vindt hij. Daarom is de term ‘varkensgriep’ volgens Osinga misplaatst. Er zijn in de VS tot dusver geen meldingen gedaan van varkens (of andere dieren) die geïnfecteerd zijn met het nieuwe virus. De Amerikanen bij wie infectie tot nu toe is aangetoond, hadden geen contact gehad met varkens.

    ‘Echte varkensgriep’ komt, zoals de naam zegt, voor bij varkens. Het gaat om de typen H1N1, H1N2, H1N3 en H3N2. De symptomen bij varkens kunnen sterk variëren van volledig symptoomloos tot griepachtige verschijnselen, waardoor dieren niet vreten, blijven liggen, koorts hebben en hoesten. Meestal verdwijnen de symptomen na vijf tot zeven dagen. Bij dragende zeugen kan verwerpen optreden. Om die reden worden zeugen vaak standaard ingeënt tegen varkensgriep.

    Griepvirussen, ook wel influenzavirussen genoemd, komen wereldwijd voor bij mensen en dieren. Ze worden vaak ingedeeld in de typen A, B en C. Ze worden in een groot aantal soorten zoogdieren en vogels gevonden. Mensen kunnen van alle drie verschillende typen ziek worden, terwijl alleen het type A voorkomt bij zoogdieren als varkens en paarden, en in vogels. Het griepvirus bestaat uit segmenten die kunnen muteren. Type A griepvirussen krijgen een naam die afhangt van de karakterisering van twee eiwitten op de mantel van het virus: het haemagglutinine (H) en het neuraminidase (N). Er zijn tot dusver 16 H’s en 9 N’s gevonden.

    Het Mexicaanse virus is een H1N1-virus en dat is waarschijnlijk ook de reden dat in Noord-Amerika nu wordt gerefereerd aan ‘Swine flu’. Maar er zijn vele varianten en bronnen van H1N1. Wetenschappers geven tot op dit moment aan dat het hier gaat om een geheel nieuw, humaan griepvirus.

    'swineflu' is een (recentelijk door journalisten uitgevonden) mediahype-kreet geworden, omdat onderzoekers beweerd hebben, dat het virus "mogelijk" in varkens gemuteerd kan zijn.

    MEXICO CITY, April 26 -- Six days a week, Luis Enrique Herrera rode his bicycle to work, a round-trip journey of nearly 20 miles. He worked with his hands as an auto mechanic and seemed to his relatives a healthy 35-year-old man, which is why they did not feel overly worried when he had to go to the hospital. "We thought he had a common cold, something normal," said his younger brother, Gabriel Herrera.
    It was 12 days ago that Luis Herrera walked into this city's National Institute for Respiratory Illnesses with a fever of more than 102 degrees, aching bones and breathing problems. Now he is isolated, uncommunicative, bedridden and breathing through a tube. His doctors have not confirmed which strain of flu he has contracted, but his family fears it is the deadly new swine virus that has virtually shut down this city of 20 million people.
    "He just kept getting worse and worse and worse," Gabriel Herrera said. "His condition now is really very grave."
    The anxiety over the virus has vastly altered the rhythm of Mexico City, with millions of people staying home and many of those who venture out doing so wearing masks. On Sunday, Catholic Masses across the city were canceled. One of the most popular Mexican professional soccer teams played a game in an empty stadium that can seat more than 100,000 people. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said he might have to shut down all public transportation if the crisis worsens.

    The question of who contracts and ultimately dies from this virus has become a matter of central concern in Mexico. And the answers that are beginning to emerge as the death toll rises have been ominous. Relatively young adults, presumably among the population's most healthy, have been the first to succumb. Sunday afternoon, Mexico placed the death toll at 86, and a Health Ministry official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said all the dead were ages 25 to 50. The ministry later raised the toll to 103.
    Fifteen people in Mexico City who are suspected to have died from the virus were 25 to 37 years old, Ebrard said in a radio interview Sunday.

    The high proportion of young adults among the fatalities is one of several mysteries about this virus. The same pattern emerged during the 1918-1919 Spanish influenza epidemic, which killed at least 50 million people, and it remains unexplained in that case as well.
    One theory is that the virus triggers an excessively aggressive immune response that destroys the throat and lung tissue. Young adults, with the most robust immune systems, may be especially at risk.
    The greatest concentration of cases and deaths have been in Mexico City, the surrounding state of Mexico, and the state of San Luis Potosi to the north. Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova said 30 suspected swine flu cases are spread across 17 other states.
    Most of the fatal cases involved extensive lung damage, requiring doctors to prescribe mechanical breathing assistance. Exactly what caused the lung damage is not known.

    Justino Regalado Pineda, an epidemiologist with the Health Ministry, said adults would be more likely to contract the flu simply because they tend to congregate more in public places, such as at their workplaces.
    He speculated that one reason people have died in Mexico as opposed to the United States is that the life span of the virus could have been longer in Mexico.

    Flu Virus Mutations May Limit Tamiflu Usefulness

    PHILADELPHIA, April 27, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc. (NYSE Amex:HEB) announced today that it had received notice of an Annual Report (April 2008- March 2009) prepared by a Director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) to the governing organization of the Japanese Ministry of Health (acronym, MHLW) reporting a series of successful preclinical studies in new pandemic vaccines which rely critically on Ampligen(r) (Poly I : Poly C12U) an experimental therapeutic for efficacy. The efficacy was demonstrated both within the airways themselves as well as systemically. As a result, the program is expected to be accelerated into human volunteers promptly under supervision of NIID staff. The project is officially titled: "Clinical Application of the Influenza Virus Vaccine in the Intranasal Dosage Form for Mucosal Administration."

    Concurrently, the company's collaborative partner in Japan, Biken Corporation, reported to Hemispherx successful completion of a series of animal/preclinical tests on Ampligen(r), an experimental therapeutic, necessary to support a new product registration in Japan. Successful studies in animal models, including the monkey studies conducted to date under auspices of the Japanese NIID, do not necessarily predict human safety and efficacy of any investigational product including Ampligen(r).

    The recent emergence of a new swine flu strain with high associated mortality in Mexico provides additional significance to the Japanese studies. The original studies by Dr. Hasegawa and his colleagues that provided the basis for the expanded preclinical trials demonstrated cross clade protection against H5N1 isolates following vaccination with a seasonal influenza vaccine (J Infect Dis.196:1313-1320, 2007).

    A recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) "Health Advisory for the 2008-2009 Influenza season" also noted that 98% of 50 HINI influenza isolates were resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu(r)) and recommended that influenza vaccination efforts continue.

    NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City has 45 confirmed or likely cases of swine flu and that number is likely to rise as testing of more than 100 sick students continued, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday.

    The outbreak of swine flu appeared to be contained to one high school in the borough of Queens, he said.

    "We believe that there are probably more than 100 cases of swine flu at the school and lab tests are confirming what we have suspected," Bloomberg told a news conference.

    New York City had confirmed eight cases on Sunday, when officials said the number was likely to increase. On Monday there were 28 confirmed cases plus 17 probable cases.

    "This is in no way an indication of a change in the size of the population that is affected," Bloomberg said.

    The virus has killed 103 people in Mexico and spread to the United States, Canada and Europe.

    While the virus has so far killed no one outside Mexico, it has proved it can spread quickly between humans, raising fears that the world may be facing the flu pandemic that scientists say is long overdue.

    27 April 2009 -- The current situation regarding the outbreak of swine influenza A(H1N1) is evolving rapidly. As of 27 April 2009, the United States Government has reported 40 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine influenza A(H1N1), with no deaths. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection with the same virus, including seven deaths. Canada has reported six cases, with no deaths, while Spain has reported one case, with no deaths.

    Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

    WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

    There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

    4: Hele gemeenschappen kunnen worden geraakt; risico van een pandemie neemt significant toe. Nadruk op tegengaan van de verspreiding van het virus. Landen wordt gevraagd reisadviezen en controles van reizigers te overwegen. Getroffen landen wordt gevraagd vaccinatiecampagnes te overwegen, evenals beperking van de bewegingsvrijheid van personen in besmet gebied.

    5: Virus gaat in zeker twee landen in dezelfde regio over van mens op mens. Sterke aanwijzingen dat pandemie op komst is. Landen moeten mensen met ademhalingsproblemen adviseren thuis te blijven. Scholen worden gesloten, werk wordt anders georganiseeerd.

    6: Pandemische fase, met besmetting mens op mens ook in andere regio's. Noodplannen voor de gezondheidszorg op alle niveaus.

    On the advice of the Committee, the WHO Director-General decided on the following.

    The Director-General has raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4.

    The change to a higher phase of pandemic alert indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable.

    As further information becomes available, WHO may decide to either revert to phase 3 or raise the level of alert to another phase.

    This decision was based primarily on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks.

    Given the widespread presence of the virus, the Director-General considered that containment of the outbreak is not feasible. The current focus should be on mitigation measures.

    Toen ik vanmorgen vroeg opstond was de lucht grauw en grijs. Daarnaast zag ik dat goud wéér onder de 900 was gedoken.....mmmmmm, geen goed begin van de dag, voelde me een beetje sjaggie.

    Toen pakte ik het Financieel Dagblad van de deurmat en na een paar minuten verscheen er een brede glimlach op mijn gezicht, mijn dag was weer helemaal goed.

    Naast de bestaande antivirale middelen Tamiflu en Relenza, heeft het FD een nieuw antiviraal middel tegen de mogelijke pandemie ontdekt:

    Tamil-flu

    Tamilflu staat niet alleen in de papieren oplage (op 2 verschillende pagina's) tot wel 3 keer toe .....neen, ook in de online versie en dan nòg duidelijker met een streepje ertussen Tamil-flu.

    Tjonge....dacht ik toen, wat zouden ze met die Tamiltijgers in noord SriLanka gedaan hebben. Bijna geheel verslagen door het leger en dan....vermalen tot een FD-virusremmer ?

    Griepuitbraak drijft omzet farmacie op
    Beleggers verwachten dat een griepuitbraak de omzet van de producenten van antivirale middelen zal opdrijven.
    Het Britse GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) steeg met 8% en het Zwitserse Roche met 3,5%.
