    We will continue to introduce new PNDs and to innovate in the content and services we offer.

    Tele Atlas release maps of Chile and Uruguay
    Tele Atlas announced the availability of new digital maps and related content covering Chile and Uruguay and updated maps of Argentina and Brazil.

    Tele Atlas’ Latin American database now includes coverage of five countries, more than 1.7 million kilometers and more than 750,000 points of interest (POIs). Tele Atlas customers such as Digibase, Google and TomTom have already launched solutions using these maps.

    Tele Atlas’ map of Chile encompasses 155,000 kilometers of roadways, covering approximately 95 percent of the population and more than 110 cities with complete street network coverage, including Antofagasta, Puente Alto, Santiago de Chile, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, as well as 77,000 POIs. The company’s digital maps for Uruguay, the first ever delivered, cover 41 percent of the population across approximately 8,000 kilometers.

    Additionally, Tele Atlas released expanded maps of Argentina with more than 193,000 kilometers of navigable roads, including coverage of the country’s major road network and street level coverage in 70 cities across the country, including Buenos Aires, Cordoba, La Plata and Rosario. The Argentina maps now cover 46 percent of the population and offer more than 13,000 points of interest.

    The latest Brazil maps now encompass more than 980,000 kilometers, with street-level coverage for approximately 70 percent of the population. Coverage across 1,300 municipalities includes all of the Brazil’s cities with populations of more than two million such as the metropolitan areas of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Salvador, Goiania, Recife and Fortaleza.

    Kaartenmaker AND heeft een deal gesloten met een grote onbekende Amerikaanse klant voor de levering van kaarten van West-Europa. Hierdoor zal de omzet en de winst van AND in 2009 'verveelvoudigen'. Het betreft mogelijk Google.

    AND maakte het nieuws over het miljoenencontract met de onbekende partij bekend in zijn jaarverslag over 2008. Volgens Het Financieele Dagblad zou de onbekende partij Google betreffen. Al sinds juni vorig jaar is bekend dat AND in gesprek was met een aantal partijen. Het zou toen gaan om een financiële injectie of overname.

    De partner waarmee een overeenkomst is gesloten, zou voor de digitale kaarten van AND hebben gekozen vanwege de stringente voorwaarden die concurrenten aan het gebruik van hun kaarten stellen, zo verklaarde Maarten Oldenhof, topman van AND, tegenover Het Financieel Dagblad. "De twee marktleiders Navteq en TeleAtlas stellen de ongebruikelijke eis dat zij apart betaald worden voor iedere toepassing die de koper van hun kaarten verzint", aldus Oldenhof. Hierdoor zijn fabrikanten van navigatieapparatuur en aanbieders van lokatiegebaseerde diensten extra duur uit, meent Oldenhof.

    Volgens Oldenhof heeft de contractpartij de AND-kaarten een jaar lang getest en besloten dat deze niet onderdoen voor de kaarten van de overige aanbieders. Vooral op prijs denkt AND in te kunnen lopen op de marktleiders Navteq en TeleAtlas. Dit laatste bedrijf werd in juni 2008 definitief door TomTom overgenomen, terwijl Navteq in juli van dat jaar door Nokia werd ingelijfd.

    Met de overeenkomst zegt AND in staat te zijn om zijn database verder te ontwikkelen. De daarvoor noodzakelijke investeringen kunnen door de nieuwe miljoenendeal volledig uit eigen middelen worden gefinancierd. Wel benadrukt de AND-topman dat het bedrijf ook na de deal onafhankelijk blijft.

    Voor de komende jaren voorziet Oldenhof verdere autonome groei door het toenemende aanbod en gebruik van mobieltjes met ingebouwde gps-functionaliteit. Ook andere spelers uit de 'online markt' zullen zich volgens AND zich op mobiele gps-gebaseerde diensten werpen.

    AND sloot 2008 af met een winst van 1,3 miljoen euro, een stijging ten opzichte van een jaar eerder van 9,3 procent, terwijl de omzet juist terugliep. Deze kwam in 2008 20 procent lager uit op 3,6 miljoen euro. Door het contract zal de omzet en de winst in 2010 minimaal op het niveau liggen van 2009.

    While Garmin and TomTom together occupied 67% of the global shipments of portable navigation devices (PNDs) in the fourth quarter of 2008, their combined share in the Asia market reached only 10-20% due to strong competition from local PND makers and electronic map data suppliers, according to Michael Hsu, vice president of marketing, Garmin Taiwan.

    Although Taiwan-based Mio Technology, which sells PNDs in three trade names – Mio, Navman and Magellan – is currently the third-ranking PND vendor worldwide with a 10% share, it is the top vendor in Taiwan and has also outperformed Garmin and TomTom in the Asia-Pacific region, Hsu noted.

    Thinkware System is the largest PND vendor in South Korea, while China-based Shinco is the top vendor for the China market, Hsu said.

    Taiwan-based Macton Technologies, a leading supplier of electronic maps, has also launched its Papago-brand PNDs for the markets in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, he said.

    Electronic map data suppliers in India and Malaysia have also ventured into the PND hardware market, heating up the competition for the PND market in the region, Hsu remarked.

    Stefan Kühn, who was until the beginning of the year vice president sales Central and Eastern Europe at TomTom, has joined German PC and PND manufacturer Medion AG as Head of Sales National & International. “Due to my background navigation is one of the Medion product groups I am focussing on with a clear target to develop Medion´s PND business outside of Aldi [eg: a key, historical retail partner to Medion]“, he said in an email to GPS Business News.

    Medion: 4.3M PNDs sold in 2008
    The recently published annual report of Medion shows the company sold 4.327 million Personal Navigation Devices (PND) in 2008, an increase of 16.1% against the previous year. However, the average selling price was significantly reduced at €204 per unit, a 28.4% drop; as a result, revenue for this segment declined by 16.8% at €883 million.

    The same report indicates that Medion continued to make serious investment to improve its PND product line: an advance payment of €220,000 for mobile navigation software development was made in 2008.

    Prior to joining TomTom, Stefan Kühn was sales manager Central Europe at Handspring, before the acquisition of the PDA maker by Palm.

    At TomTom Kühn has been replaced by Nuno Campos as Vice President Sales DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

    Linux Group Investigates Microsoft Patents in TomTom Case

    A Linux group is hoping to discredit three Microsoft patents that were at the heart of a recent lawsuit with GPS device maker TomTom.

    The Open Innovation Network is asking people to examine three patents and submit any so-called "prior art" that might call into question the validity of the patents. Prior art is information published before the patent was issued that describes similar technology.

    The patents were at the heart of a lawsuit Microsoft filed against TomTom. As part of a settlement, TomTom agreed to pay Microsoft to license the patents for technologies in its car navigation and file management system.

    The settlement worried the Linux community because the patents involve technologies found in the Linux OS that TomTom uses in its portable devices. While Microsoft has recently seemed to ease up on its threats against Linux, it has in the past claimed that Linux violates hundreds of its patents. The TomTom dispute raised fears that Microsoft might pursue other companies using similar technology or start more aggressive action against other Linux users too.

    At the time it filed the suit against TomTom, Microsoft said open source was not the focal point of its complaint. The case was about TomTom's specific implementation of the Linux kernel, Microsoft said.

    The Open Innovation Network has posted the patents relevant to the TomTom issue online and invited anyone to submit information about the patents on the site.

    Neither TomTom nor Microsoft responded immediately to requests for comment.

    Let op: dit is een bericht uit 2008. Ik rijd zelf motor en de Rider 2 is al meer dan een jaar uit. Het wordt tijd voor de Rider 3. Ik rijd overigens zelf gewoon met mijn GO720 op mijn motor.
    Excuses, echter in het bericht stond 26 april 2009. Aangezien ik zelf geen motor rijdt was ik hier niet mee bekend.

    After a few days of rumors about NAVIGON withdrawal from the North American market, NAVIGON’s CEO Egon Minar spoke this morning to GPS Business News: “Due to the difficult economic environment and the aggressive pricing we have decided to withdraw from the PND business in North America for the time being. We are however not closing down our Chicago office which will continue to serve our automotive and mobile phone businesses in North America.”

    Egon Minar did not detail how many people are affected by this downsize, but it is a “significant number of people in our Chicago office”, he said. Only a few people will remain to take care of the existing PND customers: “we will continue to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update, etc.”, he added.

    NAVIGON launched its first products on the North American market in September 2007. During the first quarter of 2008 the German company reached the fourth position on the US market with a share of 7.7%. To reach this share so quickly NAVIGON invested in advertising and was the first to introduce a lifetime traffic service bundled into the price of its product. The German company also had a local product team to localize its software to North American tastes.

    It seems the NAVIGON presence on the U.S. market was sustainable as far as the A brands maintained a certain level of premium price. But with products such as the TomTom ONE selling at $99 during the last Christmas season and beyond, there was not much opportunity left to NAVIGON despite the good quality of their products.

    Despite this downsize NAVIGON expects to increase its business in its mobile division in North America. Most recently the German company signed a deal with T-Mobile (in Germany) to equip many Smartphones with its onboard navigation software (read here; Egon Minar is now looking at extending this deal in North America. However, this might be a real challenge since European players (Wayfinder, Telmap) have had so far little success on the market. The Apple App store could be an opportunity, but here again price competition is likely to be fierce.

    Important market concentration
    A few weeks only after Mio decided a significant downsizing of its workforce in the US, this is another mid size PND manufacturer to be hit by the aggressive pricing policies currently taking place on the North American market. What is good news for market leaders Garmin and TomTom is certainly bad news for the rest of the value chain. This is the case for retailers which have now little options left when it comes to lining up PNDs on their shelves.

    AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Navigon, een concurrent van TomTom, heeft aangekondigd de Amerikaanse markt voor persoonlijke navigatie-apparaten te verlaten. Hoewel de prijzen nog steeds onder druk staan, neemt de concurrentie hierdoor af, stelt SNS. Met het vertrek van verschillende kleinere merken zal de prijserosie mogelijk wat afnemen. Het advies is buy. Dinsdag omstreeks 10.00 uur noteert het aandeel 1,3% hoger op EUR5,22, terwijl de AEX met 0,2% stijgt. (BTZ)

    Niet alleen de pricing zal in dit geval verbeteren. Ook het marktaandeel, 7,7%, kan worden verdeeld onder de marktleiders. Dat kan en is alleen gunstig voor TomTom.

    TomTom swaps Hill & Knowlton for Starfish Communications.

    Satellite navigation firm TomTom has taken its UK consumer PR account from Hill & Knowlton and handed it to Starfish Communications.
    Starfish won the account after a three-way pitch and will look to promote the variety in the TomTom range. The company offers GPS products via a number of platforms, including online, mobile and integrated automotive products as well as its best-known portable navigation devices (PNDs).

    The agency will also support the firm's new generation of connected navigation devices - the TomTom LIVE range of PNDs - which deliver real-time traffic information (TomTom HD Traffic), safety camera alerts, fuel price search and Google local search.

    The campaign, which runs for an initial period of 12 months, will embrace new product launches, digital marketing, events and personality PR, plus corporate and consumer media relations, including press, broadcast, online and social media.

    Starfish will report to TomTom PR manager for the UK and Ireland Jenny Hodge. She said: ‘We have broadened the agency remit and have appointed Starfish because of their strategic understanding, as well as their creativity and expertise in consumer technology.'
