Japan Airlines prepares to file for bankruptcy

Airline will reject offers of equity investment from US rivals American and Delta Airlines and undergo state-sponsored restructuring

    Phillip Inman
    guardian.co.uk, Sunday 10 January 2010 19.53 GMT

Japan Airlines is expected to be declared bankrupt, possibly as early as this week, despite offers of aid from US rivals that could rescue the stricken carrier.

The airline, which is the biggest in Asia but is burdened with debts of £10bn, will file for bankruptcy as part of a state-sponsored restructuring that is likely to see it emerge slimmed down and ready to renegotiate with its partners.

The move could have significant implications for British Airways, which is a partner with American Airlines and Japan Airlines in the Oneworld Alliance.

Cadbury prepares final defence against Kraft takeover

    Richard Wachman
The Observer, Sunday 10 January 2010

The takeover battle for Cadbury moves towards its climax this week when the chocolate company releases its final defence against a hostile bid launched by Kraft of the US.

Cadbury is expected to attack predator Kraft's stock price performance since its demerger from Philip Morris more than eight years ago.

Kraft's shares were worth about $31 in 2001, but on Friday were valued at little more than $27, a fact that Cadbury chairman Roger Carr could use to reiterate his position that Kraft is a low-growth conglomerate trying to acquire Cadbury on the cheap.

Lexicon awaits bids as it begins sale for City broker KBC Peel Hunt

    By Simon Evans

    Sunday, 10 January 2010

Bids are expected to be tabled for broker Peel Hunt after Lexicon, the corporate boutique which is running the auction for Belgian owner KBC, sent out information memoranda last week.

Possible buyers have been approached since September when news of the sale broke. It's believed it could be sold for as little as £30m – KBC paid £218.5m for the business in 2000. A management buyout is thought to be the most likely option.

Stephen Foley: The banking crisis claims another victim

    Saturday, 9 January 2010

US Outlook: The decision by Christopher Dodd, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, not to seek a sixth term as Senator for Connecticut, is a reminder that the 2008 bailout of Wall Street is still causing unpredictable ripples in US politics.

Stephen Foley: The tablet PCs that will kill off e-readers

    Saturday, 9 January 2010

US Outlook: The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas always tempts one into flights of fantasy about our technological future.

The annual geekfest is too claustrophobic an environment in which to be making reliable predictions, really, but here goes anyway. This year's exhibitors unveiled a slew of e-readers, promising competition to the Amazon Kindle and the Sony e-reader, but I think they are all doomed. Even the Kindle may be a historical footnote, steamrollered by the other great movement on show in Vegas: the launch of the slate, or tablet, computer.

CBI pours cold water on green shoots for economy
    Miles Costello

A tentative recovery in Britain’s financial services sector will fizzle out soon, posing fresh questions about a revival in the wider economy, according to the CBI.

In its latest quarterly survey, which is published today, the employers’ group says that banks, building societies, dealers and other financial institutions are at their most pessimistic since December 2008, when the UK was in the grip of a banking crisis.

Private banks form secret syndicates of clients to snap up commercial property
    Rebecca O’Connor, Property Correspondent

Private banks are putting together secret syndicates of their rich clients to buy commercial property off-market.

HSBC Private Bank said that there had been a rise in demand from its international clients for exposure to big-ticket commercial property investments in capital cities, after evidence that the market had bottomed out.

The bank said that it had taken the “unusual step” of setting up a syndicate in response, a move that will add to an already competitive field of investors seeking to capitalise on what they see as an historically attractive opportunity.

Disappointment ahead for UK — and big test for euro
    Anatole Kaletsky: Economic view

In the 20 years since I started writing the economic view column, I have devoted each year’s first article to making some non-consensus predictions, always preceded by an assessment of what I had said 12 months before.

Usually, this retrospective audit is a humbling experience, but in 2009, most of my predictions turned out to be roughly right. This, however, is no cause for self-congratulation, since it merely reverses the dismal record of the previous year, when almost everything I said turned out to be wrong. These two outcomes were closely related for reasons that may shed some light on the year ahead.

Britain should be a workshop, not a casino
Making real products is far superior to having a lust for quick returns. It recognises the crucial link between effort and reward
    Stephen Bayley

Anything that is made betrays the beliefs and preoccupations, the morals and manners, of the people who made it. So it’s been melancholy these past 30 or 40 years to note that Britain has successively, even systematically, abandoned key industrial technologies.
