    ASSEN - Wielrenners kunnen mei volgend jaar hun eerste rondjes rijden op de 200 meter wielerbaan in Assen. De uitgewerkte plannen voor het Wielerdrôme werden gisteren aan de wielerverenigingen gepresenteerd.

    Voor de onoverdekte kombaan wordt accoya gebruikt, een verduurzaamde houtsoort, die 25 tot 40 jaar goed blijft en ook perfect is als de baan alsnog wordt overdekt, zegt architect en wielerbaanbouwer Sander Douma uit Stompetoren (bij Alkmaar). Een overkapping blijft een vurige wens van de wielersporters.

    Sober

    Het Wielerdrôme, waarvoor de eerste plannen al van dertig jaar geleden dateren, wordt sober uitgevoerd. Aanvankelijk had de gemeente Assen 4,8 miljoen euro voor de accommodatie uitgetrokken, dat werd onder invloed van de bezuinigingen 2,8 miljoen. Ondermeer het dak, de kantine en een deel van de kleedkamers sneuvelden.

    Douma verwacht dat fase 2 snel kan worden aangepakt. Via fondsverwerving, acties en zelfwerkzaamheid moet 200.000 tot 300.000 euro worden opgebracht. Dan kan tussen wielerbaan en de al bestaande sporthal een verdieping met kantine worden gebouwd en het aantal kleedkamers worden verdubbeld van twee naar vier.

    Dak

    Realisatie van het dak is nog een stap verder. De wielerbaan wordt wel zo gebouwd dat de overspanning zonder aanvullende bouwwerkzaamheden kan worden gerealiseerd.

    Douma heeft al wel ideeën hoe het zou moeten worden. Aanvankelijk dacht hij aan een overkapping in de vorm van een wiel van een racefiets, nu gaat zijn voorkeur uit naar een wielerhelm, waarvan de vorm zodanig is dat ook een deel van de BMX-baan wordt overdekt.

    Gat in het Noorden

    Douma is vanaf het allereerste begin, via initiatiefnemer Max Bruins, betrokken bij het plan voor een wielerbaan. Andere banen zijn in Apeldoorn, Alkmaar, Amsterdam en Rotterdam. ,,Assen vult het gat in het Noorden nu mooi op.'' Wielerunie KNWU wil de baan ook gebruiken voor centrale trainingen.

    De verwachting is dat in juli gestart kan worden met de voorbereidende werkzaamheden voor de bouw, die wordt uitgevoerd door een combinatie van J.C. Krans aannemingsbedrijven, Bejan Engineering en Sander Douma Architects. Na de winter wordt gestart met de aanleg van de kombaan, die 6,5 meter breed wordt en een helling krijgt die varieert van 13 tot 47 procent. Het BMX-parcours krijgt een lengte van 350 meter met hoogtes tot 5 meter.
