OpenTV:overeenkomst met Thaise kabelbedrijf OpenTV announces: Blazing the path of interactive television across the globe, OpenTV and United Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), Thailand's leading satellite and cable TV operator, announced today an agreement to deploy OpenTV's interactive television (ITV) software to UBC's viewers. UBC is uniquely positioned to reach the massive Thai television market as the nation's leading pay television broadcaster to deliver digital television services via both satellite and cable. For OpenTV, the agreement marks an important market opportunity. With its flexible software platforms compatible with all levels of digital TV technologies, and UBC's leading market share, the companies will be able to offer easy-to-use e-mail, e-commerce and internet browsing capabilities, among many other ITV services, to a country of 60 million people where only two percent of population own personal computers. "With this exciting new agreement, television will deliver a whole new viewing experience to the Thai television market and, perhaps, play an important social role by providing communications services like e-mail to people for whom home computers do not play a role in their lives," said Jan Steenkamp, president and CEO, OpenTV. "UBC is a pioneering company that appreciates the major impact it can have by delivering compelling interactive experiences to viewers who embrace TV as their primary information and entertainment medium." It is expected that the agreement could potentially bring interactive television to the over 333,000 and growing subscriber base of UBC. The two companies look forward to capturing a significant share of this market and expanding their reach to the wider Asian region. In addition to providing e-mail and Web-surfing capabilities, OpenTV's leading ITV applications allow viewers, with just a click of the remote control, to view weather and sports information, play interactive games, send and receive e-mail, and conduct banking transactions and e-commerce, among other rapidly developing services.
