Plug Power building new factory in Australia

COLONIE — Fuel cell and hydrogen infrastructure manufacturer Plug Power is going to build a massive factory in Australia as part of a joint venture with a renewable energy company, Fortescue Future Industries Pty Ltd.

Plug Power and Fortescue Future Industries will build the factory, which will initially make large-scale proton exchange membrane electrolyzers that are used to make so-called green hydrogen that doesn't derive from fossil fuels, making it a clean fuel source since it does not release greenhouse gases when converted into energy.

Fortescue Future Industries will be the main customer for the electrolyzers, and the two companies expect that the factory will later be used to make fuel cells and other hydrogen refueling and infrastructure technologies as well.

Plug Power, which is based in Colonie, will provide the electrolyzer and fuel cell system technology specs, and Fortescue Future Industries will contribute manufacturing capabilities, the two companies said in a statement.

An electrolyzer uses electricity to create hydrogen. When paired with renewable energy sources to produce electricity, such as hydro, wind or solar power, they are able to produce so-called green hydrogen that is 100 percent renewable and non-carbon emitting.

Typically, most hydrogen today is made from methane from natural gas, a fossil fuel. Plug Power and Fortescue Future Industries are aligned in their strategy to produce green hydrogen, which could become the fuel of choice globally for a variety of vehicles and other applications to combat climate change.

“We need solar panels, wind towers, and electrolyzers in such scale that we need to produce them where we use them – including in Australia," Julie Shuttleworth, CEO of Fortescue Future Industries said in a statement. "We have enough solar and wind in Australia to power many countries of the world. Working together with Plug Power, we can create this future.

Although Plug Power began as a fuel cell maker - making fuel cells that convert hydrogen into energy to power forklift trucks and other vehicles - the company is also vying to be among the world's largest producers of green hydrogen and has been working to build green hydrogen plants across the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Plug Power is currently building a $125 million electrolyzer factory outside of Rochester that will initially supply Fortescue Future Industries with electrolyzers in the second half of 2022. The cost of the Queensland factory was not revealed by Plug Power, although Fortescue Future Industries said in a press release last month it was planning to invest $84 million on electrolyzer factory that appears to be the same one mentioned by Plug Power.

“Australia and New Zealand will be a big market opportunity for our green hydrogen ecosystem of electrolyzers, fuel cells, and green hydrogen,” Plug Power President and CEO Andy Marsh said. “This year, we will do megawatts of deployment in these markets, and gigawatts in the coming years.”

“Hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers have a great future as the world reduces emissions. Green energy, green hydrogen, green ammonia and fuel cells powered by green hydrogen are all essential to support a planet with a high standard of living that will last forever,” Shuttleworth added.
