Intel Finds Yet Another Way to Win in the AI Market
    Sat, January 6, 2024 at 3:35 PM GMT+1

Semiconductor giant Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has hitched its wagon to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. The company is putting AI at the center of nearly everything it does.

In the PC market, Intel's latest Meteor Lake CPUs feature built-in hardware that enables AI inference workloads to be run locally. The task of blurring the background in a Zoom call, for example, can be offloaded to that AI hardware, which frees up the CPU and GPU to handle other processing tasks, providing a snappier experience and improving devices' battery life.

In the server market, Intel's Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids server CPUs are also equipped with AI accelerators. While these CPUs don't handle AI workloads nearly as capably as high-powered GPUs from Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), they offer an efficient way to run some AI inference tasks. Given how scarce and pricey data center GPUs have become, Intel's focus on lowering the total cost of ownership should appeal to its customers.

Intel also competes directly with Nvidia with its Gaudi line of AI accelerators. Gaudi2 is the most recent version, and while the chip isn't as powerful as Nvidia's top-tier product, it still delivers solid performance. The next-generation Gaudi3 will launch this year, providing a more compelling alternative to Nvidia's chips.

In addition, Intel can tap into demand for AI computing capacity with its foundry business. Intel is rapidly rolling out new process nodes as part of its roadmap. Intel 4 is in volume production now, Intel 3 will come early this year, and both Intel 20A and Intel 18A are expected to be ready by the end of 2024. With Intel 18A, the company expects to regain its manufacturing edge over TSMC. If all goes as planned, Intel will be a viable manufacturing alternative for AI chip designers

    Join Intel at CES

00:30u vannacht.

    INTC versus TSM

3 Reasons Why TSMC Won’t Adopt High-NA EUV Lithography Until 2032
    Editorial Team January 7, 2024

    techovedas.com/3-reasons-why-tsmc-won...

"In contrast to Intel's use of High-NA EUV soon after its shift to GAA (planned for [20A] insertion), we expect TSMC'sHigh-NA EUV insertion in the post N1.4 era (the inflection likely at N1, scheduled for post-2030 launch),"

    Conclusion

Intel is aggressively advancing its process technology with High-NA EUV lithography, while TSMC takes a measured approach to uphold cost competitiveness and manage production complexities. TSMC’s decision to postpone High-NA EUV adoption until 2032 is a strategic move, not a reluctance to embrace innovation, setting the stage for dynamic competition in the semiconductor industry.

Intel targets automotive sector with AI-enabled system-on-chip for next-generation cars

Intel Corp. is making an ambitious play for the automotive sector with the launch of specialist versions of its newest, artificial intelligence-enabled chips.

With the launch, the company is throwing down the gauntlet to rivals Nvidia Corp. and Qualcomm Inc., which currently dominate the market for semiconductors that act as the brains of a new generation of smart cars.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, the company unveiled a new Software-Defined Vehicle system-on-chip that’s said to have been engineered to infuse AI experiences into next-generation vehicles. The SoCs are flexible too, since developers will be able to say exactly what kind of processing they want in a car.

The Chinese electric vehicle maker Zeekr Co. Ltd. has been named as the first automaker to use Intel’s AI-enhanced software-defined vehicle system-on-chips, and it plans to create an “enhanced living room experience” in its vehicles, with video conferencing and AI voice assistant capabilities.

Jack Weast, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive, said in a briefing at CES the new AI chips for cars are based on the company’s recently announced AI PC technology, but will be adapted for the durability and performance requirements of cars and other vehicles.

Alongside the new chips, Intel announced plans to acquire French startup Silicon Mobility SAS, which designs SoC technology and software that’s used to control electric vehicle motors and onboard charging systems. Intel didn’t disclose how much it’s paying to buy Silicon Mobility, which is a privately held company that’s part-owned by the venture capital firms Cipio Partners and Capital-E.

The startup’s SoCs are said to incorporate industry-leading accelerators that are designed to be power-efficient. They also use advanced AI algorithms to maximize energy efficiency. The technology will help extend Intel’s reach into the automotive sector, moving beyond high-performance compute to intelligent and programmable power devices.

Intel already has an established presence in the market for infotainment systems, with its chips installed in more than 50 million vehicles worldwide. However, the company trails behind market leaders Nvidia and Qualcomm. Automotive chips are used not only for automated driving, but also to power in-car infotainment software and complex dashboard displays.
